Is there a way of taking your domain somewhere else or do Melbourne IT now hold it?

You can just transfer it away. Find a decent company and they should be able to help you.

i have been using vidahost since 2010. Had down time of about 1 hour in 5 years.

Had one issue last week (actually my fault) but they still gave me a free month.

They control my hosting and domains.

They will assist you with domain transfers i believe. You do have to pay its about £8 - £15 per domain. Most companies charge around £10. I had a domain with moon fruit or whatever it is called. Worst website in the word as was 99% flash. After 4 weeks of trying to release my domain name. Vidahost put me contact with nominet and it took 5 mins. I thought i was gonna lose my domain name forever :(

Thats a scandalous rip-off!

The domain should maybe cost £15 for a 2 year renewal,.. $150 is beyond a joke, its simple extortion!

I use TSOhost.com - UK based, awesome support, daily off-site backups and people you can talk to on the phone if you get stuck & need help quick,..

You can have your domain with ANY registrar in the world - once the nameservers are set on the domain to point at your hosting it doesn't matter who you're with.

The advantage of using a level 1 UK based registrar is that when you make changes to your domain the effects are almost instant,.. change nameservers with an American registrar and it can take up to 72 hours for the change to propagate to the UK - so its worth keeping it close to home. ;)

I use these to and can thoroughly recommend them, I was taken for a ride  with my last hosting company so fully agree with Nat's thoughts on this issue. Don't get ripped off transfer your domain name

I emailed them & got a reply approx 24 hours later basically saying "that's how it is". Not knowing what or how to do anything I let it go this time as my website is very important to me. However, I will not be renewing with them!!
