Title: Battery Charging
Post by: Michael Peterson on March 06, 2015, 11:21:06 am
was going to fit a split charge relay into my van, however, noticed that there is a cigarette lighter socket in the back right next to the battery, is there anyway to have something 12v rigged up like a trickle charge (maybe with one of those inverter things) that will do exactly the same thing as a spilt charge?

thanks in advance

i should imagine, a little trickle charger, one of those for a few pounds off ebay would just keep the battery topped up during the day, but would they run through the adapter plug plugged into the cigarette lighter socket, I don't know its limitations ?

Just connect a split relay to the lighter point wire at the back of that lighter fitting. Dont complicate matters with a an inverter. As the invert er will be converting 12 volt to 220/240 volt and  the a trickle charge will be converting it back to 12 v again.

No wonder people have fires in vans.

Please do not connect a split charge relay to the wires from a cigarette lighter.

i guess the only way to know is to connect the trickle charger via the cigarette lighter socket via a inverter plug and see if the battery drains,

Fit a split relay.  Properly.  With a FUSE.

Why's that?

^^^^ we did what slap bash said above on a L220 LWB transit Connect. It has two wires, a + and a -. We fitted an Intelligent Brocott Split Charge Relay which trickle charges an 85 amph leisure battery. However, no other stuff can be connected to that power point. The circuit is protected with a 15 amp fuse in the vans fuse box which hasn't created an issue since we fitted it 3 1/2 years ago.
