When I used to sub for Econorod I got a call to attend the Ann Summers in Canterbury - to fix a vibrating toilet ! Obviously I thought it was a wind up but they gave me a job number so off I went. The fault turned out to be dust on the extractor fan causing the stud wall to vibrate. The manager said they were told not to use the washroom so they could not wash their hands, I said they should wash their hands after they use the toilets as they were using the loos in the department store opposite - she said it was particually important to wash their hands after handling products the customers brought back under warranty. ;)

Have you got a supermarket roof fetish?
Rob ;D
I think I want to move in this direction. Can you offer advice?
-
Fantastic ..when your ready please feel free to impart your wisdom.

I realise I cannot walk into Tesco's Southport or Sainsburys Crosby and ask the girl at the customer information "can I clean your roof ? "
That's why I am posting on here ….In the hope that somebody might give me the correct procedure for approaching them and also how to price.
Thanks in advance.
-
You run an exterior surface cleaning business........... ???
-
So first I need a website and pay for a couple of meaningless accreditations then Tesco's will phone me to clean the roof?
M-clean genuine question.
You don't have the equipment or prior experience when dealing with flying rats …so why pick you? It is not on your website.
How do you price this?
-
Chris , you also will find that these accreditations differ from one client to another ! ie Safecontractor , SSIP , CSCS , ect
Not forgetting PLI . You may have to increase your premium !
I have had to do my CSCS , IPAF , PASMA , FIRST AID ,
All of this , has to be in place before you are even considered to be approved on their list .
When approved !!! , you have to be successful in your quote , RAMS to be approved
Work within their diagram and initial outlay of Fuel , Labour , Accommodation , Hire Equipment , Utility usage
Payment 3 month later >:(

Lets pretend… a little far fetched I know but I have…
The gear to do the job.
All the qualifications, ipaf ,cscs , construction on line ,first aid ,safety passport, irate.
I have a website with some "big job" pictures on.
Ltd company with 10 million PL.
I can blag a customer I can do the job if I get them on the phone.
I can do the job better than most…because I understand the soiling and chemicals to use.
25 page risk assessment.
I have enough money to wait 3 months to get payed (really …that long).
Now all I need is Tecos to phone me… how do i get them to do this?
How do I price when they do.
I still don't have the client or Job to quote for
-
Chris , that is a big question to ask , no one is going to divulge how you make contacts with clients ...
Pricing is all down to you ,look at all of the above and price accordingly .Your client will expect a discount to secure the works !!

Chris tesco won't be calling they use 5 cleaning companies to do there cleaning and at the moment they are cutting back to save money
-
The forum has malfunctioned!!
All Rob's (supermarket roof) posts have disappeared ???
I thought we had started again and advice was being freely given?
Lucy ..thanks for your input.
Do you know which 5 cleaning companies they use?
-
Chris I no a couple and I no the specs on the stores and it never includes roofs

Welcome to the forum
It seems that you have entered the world of Crosby Chris.
I clean supermarket roofs, amongst a lot of other 'supermarket' related external works.
You are right they are not in the store budget. They are done from capital expenditure, so when they have refurbs, refreshes, extensions etc they may be included in the costings.
I don't have the monopoly, far from it but I do a fair bit.
I have erased all previous posts because Chris can be ..............
Well i'll let you find out for yourself. Don't be put off
Rob ;D
-
Morning Kevin ;)
What are your thoughts to Chris's dilemna?
Rob ;D
-
IMHO Accreditations are in the main useless. As long as you have done H&S Certs appropriate to the work required IPAF licence etc all this Safe Contractor, I SO 9000 are just schemes to make money
-
I've just had an idea Kevin.
Are you busy tomorrow. Can I ring in the morning?
Rob ;D

Cheers Kevin
Similarly busy - just off to Huntingdon to clean a Sainsbury's ;)
Rob ;D
-
Chris,
If you want to place products in tescos you, allegedly, have to bung them some money, so maybe thats the route to go down! ;)
-
Paul that's correct you have to pay them to sell in there as for budgets for refurbs that's all out the window they put refurbs and new stores on hold as they trying to save money and not spend
-
Although I havent done roofs, I used to work inside.
It wasn't for the store it was the fm company that look after the stores,
You have to meet all the criteria especially H&S wise before you are even looked at, then it's if they are actually after any new subcontractors at the time, because they prefer to keep it as it is.
Better the devil you know and all that.
-
I have cleaned roofs gutters etc, all you need is a Ipaf licence with exp and some sort of h/s training, cscs card, rams and you are away no need for all that fancy stuff.
-
Thank you all for your responses
I still don't have any information on who to contact regarding getting the work… I think everything else will fall into place when I have this.
How do I price this sort of work ?
Who do I contact?
-
When I price I just think how many days will it take and who to see is the manager of the store, he will give you the details of email address of the person in charge of this type of work.
-
Were the responses helpful?
Rob ;D
-
Rob , Northumbria water phoned me yesterday with regard to a Lidl roof clean . Asking if I was the contractor on site drawing water from one of their hydrants. Someone might be getting a fine !! ???
Ed
-
It wasn't me because I don't do that ;)
Rob ;D

They (the responses) were like your new website…they lacked content and were badly formatted. But thanks for asking.
-
My websites are always a work in progress. They keep me busy.
Are you busy, can you get to the decision makers ;)
Rob ;D

You know I can't "get to the decision makers" thats why I am on here asking for help.
-
Change your smart ar*e attitude and grow up with your stupid comments and you might be taken seriously.
Maybe you can't get to the decision makers because you are exactly the same as you are on here in business.
Possibly the best advice you'll ever be given but you won't heed it.

Chris what is your obsession with supermarket roofs ?
Ed
-
Ed
Not an obsession with supermarket roofs..my obsession lies with italian trials bike and spanish enduro bikes.
I just think it is an untapped market that with my experience I could make money from.
Rob
I don't think I have a bad attitude generally. I think I am quite amicable.
-
Paul that's correct you have to pay them to sell in there as for budgets for refurbs that's all out the window they put refurbs and new stores on hold as they trying to save money and not spend
That's the perceived view but the Sainsbury's refurb I am on at Huntingdon, the Tesco I quoted in January and other works pending are contrary to that.
Tesco shelved Oakham, Wembley, Gloucester Quays, another in Gloucestershire and two more at the end of last year that I was lined up to work on
It is quieter but certainly not on hold.
Thank god for Waitrose, B & Q, the work I am on @ Cambridge Research Park now.

Rob
How do you get the work ?
You certainly are always posting that you are busy…sometimes it makes me jealous .

You want me to tell you the formula - I have already erased posts about it not being one thing.
Why not go on a business development course ?
Rob ;D
-
Business development coarse…will that help?
-
As far as I know Tesco will have a few 'Main' contractors and its these companies who will sub contract the cleaning out. I did a lot of Tesco's about 2 years ago, Sainsbury's and Morrisons. The roofs are done when the store is built, after that it will be on the maintenance programme and not top of their lists in cleaning. Prepare to wait for your money!
-
I have too your advice taking a business development coarse…I am going to the smart seal advanced training day in Leeds .
I must admit I do pass on Jobs nearly everyday …
Aberdeen I passed on as Matt is in a better position to service the customer.
It would have been a 600 mile round trip and 2 days out of my life…plus £150 worth of diesel and a night in a hotel. If I stay in a hotel …I usually rent a crack w hore for the evening so thats more expense.
