Hi,
I have been called to clean up a few spots where an elderly gentleman has had an accident. I am going tomorrow evening.
I plan to use m-power a long dwell and rinse.
What protective equipment would you recommend (just gloves?)?
I already have the products to sanitise my equipment.
Thanks.
Simon

I'd be using protective gloves.
I would use an enzyme digester (eg chemspec Enz-All) not M-Power.
You should sterilise your kit after the clean - and charge accordingly.
-
simon, it could be stomach bug, norovirus, be carefull as you can be out of work for few days.
you may need to spray whole area with some anti microbial chem
-
Thanks all.
I have been told the elderly gentleman in confusion took some anti constipation tablets.
Been ensured it was not an illness
I will ensure I use gloves and sanitise all equipment used.

Doesn't matter, people still carry bacterial or viral pathogens and don't exhibit symptoms.

Can you let us know what success you have on this,I have a similar job booked for later in the week.
Its on wool and I don't think I'm going to get complete removal of the stains left in the carpet

John Bryden done a excellent demo on this at the Carpet cleaners carnival and shared his experience of what can happen to YOU from carrying out this type of work without correct PPE and training beware

I was asked to go and Clean Up after a Dead body once buy a Solicitor .
I visited the premises with her and told her she really needed to call in a Specialist.
It amazes me I have had Calls from social services after attempted suicides all wanting the job cheap
You may ask why I do not do the training When I was fit its because such jobs made me wench now its because of my immune system

I had one recently, was a heavy deposit lifted carpet and it had gone through to the backing and underlay. Lady replaced the lot in the end. Was so bad I didn't try to clean it.

Chemspec recommend prekleen (http://www.chemspec-europe.com/displayproduct.asp?UID=52798&productname=Prekleen-Enzyme-Soil-Lifter-%284-x-2.7kg%29) initial application followed by enz-all for protein based stains. I would suggest using a broad spectrum antibacterial/antiviral (like formula 429) initially spray around the area and leave to dwell for 30 minutes. Remove wet soil (if present)with disposable scoop into plastic bag and seal. Wipe area with disposable cloths and dispose into bag and seal. Apply enz-all and/ or prekleen and agitate. Do not overwet as this will drive the soiling into the backing of the carpet. Agitate by hand with a disposable brush if possible. Otherwise use your carpet agitator and strip down and sanitise afterwards. HWE extract with de-foamer, rinse-x, some antibacterial and deodoriser mixed into the rinsing solution. Strip down and sanitise after use. Spray some kill odour citrus or enzyme urine treatment onto the area and leave. If the stain persists try some anti browning spotter and agitate and use terry towelling to absorb the stain and throw away, then HWE. Then apply odour treatment. Many odour treatments continue to work long after cleaning to continually treat the bacteria that thrive on any residue.
As far as ppe is concerned I would suggest overshoes, gloves (put these on before you ring the doorbell), a disposable face mask as a minimum. I always wear a disposable suit and white wellies (for indoor use only) which I can sanitise afterwards. Everything disposable goes in a yellow contamination bag so I know which one is the riskiest waste.
Think this is overkill? Remember you can't be too careful with your health. The most common pathogens are c. Diff, e coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Many of these are antibiotic resistant.

Really good post David
Only I would have a FFP3 mask and not just any disposable only ever a couple and with the correct mask I could not smell a thing
-
To be honest I use the scott pro mask and some friars balsam under the nostrils

Crikey, or get a new customer ........

I go where others fear to tread ;D

Just an update.. The customer cancelled early yesterday morning as her brother was going to clean it himself. By the sounds of it using a Vax spring clean (or similar). Tried to explain the bacteria etc... But can't win them all.
Luckily managed to book in another straight forward clean in its place.
Based on the replies I think I had a lucky escape! :-)
Thanks for the replies though.
Wayne please let me know how you got on for any future calls!

No crime scene (everyone wants it in the cheap) , do loads of faecal/urine contamination and respite clean-ups. Dogs/cats having the run of the house locked indoors all the time with owners who can't cope. Seems like councils can't get these done so easily. Post norovirus steam cleaning in nursing homes. I must have the stinkiest vacuum in the world!
