Typical scouser It is prudent to count the cost.

I've already decided, if i have to pay for it then i aint getting one and i'll just see what they will do about it. The annoying thing is that i was cleaning the shop with WFP, and the security told me i couldn't park my van there, even though everyone else does. He told me where to park it. So to avoid any hassle i parked it where he said and have been walking up with my ladder and bucket for about a month. Now, he's pulled this one out the hat.

Its deadly serious.

I not heard of it mate, you may be best to ask one of the lads working for easy clean, they cover most of it. However there is a shop in L1 that I will be starting soon so I will also look into it for you as well as myself.

It's one of them pole king, Liverpool 1 is a new shopping centre and is kind of run by L1 themselves, they can be a bit funny at times.
I cover work around L1 but not actually in L1, so haven't really had a major problem
But I do remember reading something about ladder permits needed when working in public areas so it could just be that, prob best to call in municipal building on dale st, on left as ya come off fly over.

I rang up the Liverpool One office today Matty, i just told them i was a window cleaner and i believe i need a ladder permit, what do i need to do etc....he gave me an email address and said send your address there and we'll give you a link to apply online for it. I've had hassle of them lots of times to be honest, they've always got something to say....put more cones out or some crap. They also run their own inhouse window cleaning team, so may be there's the rub. I've always just carried on when they've said something and just finished my job without saying too much. Might just ramp up the pressure and tell him no, go ahead and do whatever it is he's going to do if i don't !!! ;D

To my knowledge there is no such thing as a ladder permit or licence - sounds like the guy is giving you a hard time, maybe he has an agenda ? Firstly I would call his bluff and seek out his supervisor or management, at the very least get him to produce the said paperwork.
The only thing he maybe referring to is that your ladder should carry a certificate which states it's been inspected by a suitably qualified person and labeled as such. This only really applies if your an employee, not sole trader, but for own piece of mind it would be better to have a ladder log record

Nah, its just the principle of it now for me. They're always saying something. To be honest where i was parked was legal, and within the hours you're allowed. I was doing nothing wrong when i WFP it. Thats why its sticks in my throat, i just walked up with a bucket to keep the peace and not cause a fuss. And obviously its escelated to a ladder permit !!! ;D Wonder what would happen if i told him to get lost, call the cops to get me removed ?

I have a lad working for me who was working for L1, and they do like to keep in between themselves and mitie, what's the worst that can happen if they ask you not to use your equipment and you say no..........
That drive cherry pickers threw town of a night, there not supposed to,
Fick it mate, let's join together and take L1 off them all haha
Easy who are in town are shocking
-
At the request of are friend smudger, I will find out who the main man is for L1

Darran, i rung up the Maintainance department for Liverpool One and they knew all about "their" ladder permits. They gave me the email address to apply for one.............
support.desk@liverpool-one.com
I've sent them a picture of the ladder in order that they can advise the correct permit i need for it !! ;D

It must be something their H&S
kn0b officer has come up with to justify a job

I have a very similar problem with a indoor type shopping centre in my town. They now want me to sign in and out at 2 separate security stations every day and cordon off the area when we are working from (single pointer) ladders.
Only problem is that we clean 8 shops/stores in the same centre that's worth a good few quid to us so we have to toe the line or lose the lot.
You don't want to try organising getting a cherry picker in with these idiots, they make it impossible.
-
Forget to say, wouldn't it be easier to use a trad pole or wagtail rather than a ladder Mike? We only use the ladder for cleaning the signage.

Yeah i use both trad pole and wagtail anyway. I just use the ladder really to get up inside the doorway which is all glass and recessed. And to do the doors (all glass) about 8/9 foot high. I wasn't even on the ladder when he came up to me, i just seen him looking and staring. I'm really miffed over it to be honest. If was blocking off some of the pavement, or going up on a big ladder 20 feet or so, i'd see the point. But this is just nonesense.

When/if you get the permit, tear it in half, fold each half up and put them under the ladder stiles. Tell them you thought it was meant as an anti-slip device.

Well give them their due, they don't hang around. Didn't have to wait long for a reply.....

Go on, get the stilts.
You know you want to.
It'll be hilarious! You'll get noticed so may get more work from it. And, best of all,
there'll be no legislation on 'em.
-
Mike why not play them at their own game, go and ask one of the other cleaning lads if you can see HIS licence. Sounds like a bluff to me, can't see how this is legal as its not law to have a ladder licence. We may as well walk round making all sorts of new laws up and charging silly money for them

I'll play the same game as him, i'll ask to see his so i've got his name. Then tell him exactly what to do with it.
-
We do work for several company's who will o only let you use a ladder if you have been on a course to use the ladder, i think its a 1 day and about £250. This is we're you will get your permit. This is the sort of cr**p industrial window cleaners deal with weekly.

Would trad pole be practical? On some jobs like shop fronts the finish is straightforward - on others it's not practical though.
-
There's too much of this garbage around. I was one of the subbies on a large job a few years ago where they wanted £100 for me to complete a spurious safety questionairre and "award" me some plastic tag with my photo on it. I went for it because the job was still worthwhile but no mention of it before the quotation went in so that I could factor it into the price. A year later the job was due again and they wanted another £100 - even though there was never any mention of annual renewal being required. That time I told them to go and do one and it didn't sound pretty. I'm not in the market for giving someone £100 to scratch their nuts in front of a computer.
-
Well just got a nice suprise. Since they emailed me at 06.50 this morn, they've emailed me again and said its not £350 for a permit. I've mis understood something. Got some more instructions of what to do. They've also just rang me now and couldn't be more helpfull !! No charge for permits, and said they're here to help me not hinder me so that was good. Told me i could use my ladder without a permit, or i could get one what ever i wanted to do. Did ask for a description of the Guard, they knew him, and knew him to be overzealous.
For Matty: Once i have a look and get it sorted exactly how i get the permit i'll pass the info on for you.
Off to Ebay now to buy one of them Cyclist Cameras to record my next meeting with the Guard ;D

Where I work ladders are for access only not for working off.
Oh and if you climb over 4ft then you need a harness.
