Title: Web Optimization
Post by: AquaMagic on April 24, 2006, 02:08:55 pm
When i search for my company name im there on all the major search engines (happy).  But when i search Carpet Cleaner + my area im nowhere in site and the local Chemdry guy is top every time.  Gues what!,  i wanna beat him, so any help you kind people can give would be great.  I used a program called Hello engines to register the site initialy and it worked quite well, i have also spent ages filling out registration forms on the online business listings, but to feel to progress further i need to learn a little about meta tags and how search spiders work etc.

Any Ideas

Hi,

As far as i can tell from reading many forum on SEO, nobody really knows the answer.  Each engine is different and google is probably the hardest to crack.

there is a nice google seo blog >> www.mattcutts.com/blog

In terms of metas, i think most engines ignore them now, but its nice to tick all the boxes when it comes to SEO.  I have written a site that gooole awards a page rank of 4, but to be honest im not sure how we got it.

Use google to search for webmaster / SEO forums and read, read and then read some more.

Hope this helps

PS: i dont know if i would ever trust a SEO company, they all seem like a bunch of vagrants and vagabonds to me.  But, i guess if you found a decent one then that might be the simple answer.

Im amazed they charged you that. Looking at your site the changes they made probably took 10 mins, it would be fairly straight forward to bump it up into no1 for that term. But if it gets you work then thats all that matters ;)

Hi Justin.
How long has your site been live?
and how long has it been since the company optimized it.
Cheers

Hi handyalis husband writing :)

I run an IT business based in Plymouth and we do a LOT of website design, maintenance and SEO (search engine optimisation).

As a previous writer has said - it can be complicated but there are a few simple rules which, if you follow them should do you well.  Here they are:

1. META TAGS
Although not required and as important as they were, you still need to do this - don't ignore it.  In the <title> tag place the most important keywords that you want to be found for.  So if you want to be found when someone searches for cleaning companies plymouth then the title might look like this: <title>Cleaning Companies Plymouth - Cleaning Co.</title>
In the META KEYWORDS and DESCRIPTION do not spam (overload) these as the search engines could penalise you.  Again in the case of the search phrase above you could do a keyword meta tag as <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Cleaning companies plymouth company south west uk builders cleans tenancy spring">  etc NOTE no commas.  The description should follow similar lines but would need to be proper sentences in English.

2. CONTENT
There is a common phrase in the SEO world of "Content is king".  If you can make your content relevant to the search phrase in question and you can change or add to the content every now and then that would be good.  Your starting paragraph might read:

Cleaning companies in Plymouth with a good reputation can be hard to findbut Cleaning Co. are probably the best...blah blah..

Make sure your chosen keywords appear several times but again don't overload the page with hundreds of 'cleaning' as you will be considered spamming to get high results.

3. IBL's (In Bound Links)
IBL's carry weight as far as the search engines are concerned.  The more QUALITY ones the better.  It wont help you much to get dozens of links from fishing shops websites or an artic expedition website because they are not relevant.  It would help you however if you had links from let's say a carpet cleaning company linking to your window cleaning company.  Get the idea?

4. Outbound links are also important as they suggest to the Engines that you are playing 'your part' in this great *sarcasm* community we call the Internet.

5.  There can be a lot more like the name of the html file etc - if you want any specific advice I would be more than happy to correspond for free.   You can email me at mailto:jonathan.burrows@anythingit.net (http://mailto:jonathan.burrows@anythingit.net)

Oh I should give you an example of one of our sites that this is true for.  Search for the phrase: computer support plymouth and you will find two or our sites at number ONE and TWO! of over 4 million results on Google :D

Best of luck!
