Title: Yell policy!?
Post by: Dave_Lee on February 12, 2015, 01:57:13 pm
With withering Yell results in recent years, I have downsized dramatically, but kept a very small ad. Anyway this year I decided that I would not bother with it all.
A month or so back I received a letter from Yell informing that they had changed a few things. One of which was, that they were going to automatically renew advertising, unless they were notified to the contrary. In other words they would go again with my advert and if I didn't want them to I had to let them know, otherwise they would carry on.
I ignored their letter as I considered it to be out of order. I mean from my point of view, If I were to send a similar letter to one of my customers, telling them that, as they had, had their carpet cleaned on a certain date last year, I will automatically book it in for the same (or as near to) date this year, do you think I would have a leg to stand on if I were to threaten legal action, if they hadn't got back to me to inform that they didn't want it doing.
Yell are pursuing me for the cost of the advert. It is not a lot, but is the principal of the thing.
What do you think.
Dave.

If you signed to the auto renew when you last signed you owe it,
if they have brought it in since/after you last signed and it doesn't mention it on your last contract you don't owe it,

i agree with above - if you are legally bound in some way by an agreement you signed in the past by ignoring it then you will find they could take you to court and by just trying to prove a point you get a default/ccj or something on your credit file - not worth messing with that just to make a point

they may just give up but these things have a nasty way of being passed around and affecting your credit history which even if taken off the register can take an awful lot of time and hassle

if you do get them to agree for you not to pay - make sure you get the agreement in writing, in 6 months time if you get a solicitor letter you will need it then to prove your case

Ask for proof that you agreed to renew

A lot of insurance companies do this too, but you have the right to cancel. Normally there is 30 days notice and I had one who took the premium early and I got a full refund.

I had the rep round recently and was going to have them make me a site ( I know) I called the day after and cancelled it , after sleeping on it.
They took £280 from my account, even though I cancelled, took me a 45 min phone conversation and threatening them with Trading standards, to get my money back, had proof of cancellation, as the sent confirmation e mails.
Really left a sour taste in my mouth, have cut back on all my adds with them, get more work  from referrals now.

what car was the rep driving? years ago when i used Yellow Pages before they started on their slippery slope downhill they all had Audi's

bet they don't now (but maybe they do?)

they were greedy and lacked foward thinking, they had a monopoly and became arrogant - just like Tesco's. They charged massive prices but failed to be ahead of the competition on the internet and now they are fighting against a flow they won't survive in.

Speak to trading standards and they'll tell you exactly where you stand
