Title: local window cleaner falls
Post by: wightsurf on February 11, 2015, 07:03:59 pm
Not to sure on the details but from what I  have heard and local isle of Wight news a window cleaner fell from height off his ladders today. He is in a bad way and air lifted to the mainland hospital.
Just hope he pulls through !

he was quite comfortable cleaning this way,    probably because he has never fallen before.

this is why i will never go back to ladder work,    unless 100%  safe.

probably now a round going for sale on the isle of wight

all the local windies will be visiting him and leaving him there cards.

ALL IN ALL WE ALL WISH HIM A SPEEDY RECOVERY.

this is what i try to explain to my customers who moan about having no ladders.

You do know that 29,000 children under the age of five (21 kids a minute) die every day?  So a window cleaner falls from his ladders and I'm expected to feel sad about that?  I bet none of you lot will lose any sleep over it unless he was related or a mate.

I don't go for all this public grief either; seems pointless to me.

And my comment was more directed at Jakey, the guy - with a young family - who reckons he's fast on ladders.  Well a bad fall is going to slow you down a bit.

Maybe instead of jumping all over me for insensitive comments, maybe you'd be of better use encouraging the ladder only boys to add another tool to their kit?

I must admit I had the same reaction when I read Tosh's post and was initially going to complain. But after the rubbish that was spewed on here page after page the other day he has a point.

Tosh - I don't have any children.

Tosh - ladders are used all the time, mishaps do occur, I feell off myself a few years ago, thank God I was absolutely fine, somehow landed on my feet and hands with no injury what so ever, From upstairs window.

However I have not given up ladder work, instead, I am careful how I set them up. You can still be quick and safe at the same time.

Remember I use wfp as well, and do not take risks. If the ladder is appropriate, IMO it can be faster than using the pole on certain houses. The key word here is certain. Not all.

Trad is safe if you are sensible about placing the ladder.

So stop going on at me about it, or using insensitive comments like the above to moan at how I work.

Your a moderator, he's a fellow window cleaner, he may well read your comment and how do you think he will feel?

I'm all for banter, but not on issues like this. Plus you are supposed to be a moderator, it's surley best you don't keep nit picking at people? There's enough donuts on here as it is. Let alone when the moderator starts being one !

It's not meant to be funny and I doubt Tosh meant it to be funny either. Depends how you interpret it.
I don't know the guy but it's an accident that could have been avoided.

More shocking to me is the runaway lorry in Bath (quite close to me) that killed an innocent young girl and four adults the other day.

You can't remove all risk from life, but when it comes to cleaning windows, you can significantly reduce the risks.

The day I end up in hospital from a fall from a ladder - because I was working at a height I didn't have to work at - I'll agree with you, because I would be an idiot.

Each window cleaner makes their own choices to use ladders or not based on their own decision making. The risk of using ladders is inherent. The person who fell, he knew the risks. It's not that I don't have sympathy, because I do but he knew the risk each and every day he used them just as on the odd occasion I use ladders for access, I know the risk also.

Whether or not Tosh needs to keep his mouth shut is up to Tosh.

You are not saying how it is, me old cocker, you are just expressing an opinion.

Are you saying a moderator should be an example of forum etiquette; be unbiased, impartial, and not participate in flaming of other forum users, resorting to insults or comments that are intended to offend?

If I was like that, then maybe I'd expect the same standards from everyone else, and what an over-moderated forum that would become.

And anyway, a window cleaner falls, gets hurt, yet some here seem more concerned about the moderation rather than the topic.  Funny really, especially when it comes from those who like to display a bit of public internet grief.

As I say, I bet no-one here loses any sleep or misses a meal because of it.

Personally, I think we ought to 'self moderate' window cleaning and make the routine use of ladders unacceptable - like we do with drink driving - then maybe accidents like this wouldn't happen?

here here tosh

how did he fall surly he couldn't ???

wouldn't his harness of saved him ?
the ladder couldn't of slipped because the leather slaps at the top which anckers the top of the ladder couldn't of snapped ?
the feet couldn't of slipped because of the anit slip clips that get pushed in to the ground would of stoped this right ?

or was it he was hanging off a ladder and not taking on board all what your meant to do when going up a high safely ? well if so hard lines and you got what you had coming to you would we all be having a go if he fall on a pram and killed a young child

You can go WFP for about £250 if your skint. Backpack - about £85, barrels - about £5.00 each, sack of resin £75, DI vessel - £35 off ebay, harris pole - £15.00, brush and gooseneck - £50.00.

No he wasn't. When he stopped throwing his life down the pan he disappeared from here for a while, no doubt to sort his bonce out. That was when the forum was - different  ;D and we're still waiting for his bonce to catch up.

If you look back through his posts he mentions how he was a mod on a previous occassion when he was on the sauce and had to step down then as he made a habit of offending posters, flaming individuals and basically being the forum twerp and trouble maker - however this time he's meant to have been sober all the time he's been moderating here. Some might find that debatable, I'm sure we understand what life is like when the world revolves around you, but he will Im sure assure anyone to the contray if he were asked.

You must be a bit of a sad case to do that, Matt.

As for 'emotional sobriety', you've thrown your toys out of the pram and deleted your account at least four times, not counting all the times you've been banned (not all by me).  Your old accounts litter the ban log.  ;D

Then there was that time you lost your temper, gave a final last statement, deleted your account, and then logged on with a sockpuppet account to see what we were saying about you.

You're in your fifties aren't you? ;D

Let it go, mate, and chill a bit.

Tosh was an alcoholic and in the early days of this forum he sometimes posted stuff was was near the mark but I don't remember him ever being insulting or seriously OTT.

Somehow though, he packed up the booze.

I take my hat off to anyone who gives up an addiction and I don't think an achievement like that should ever be underestimated.

As for Tosh's moderating, I cannot see what the issue is. It's a storm in a teacup and to me, it's all about having a go at someone just for the sake of it which often happens on this forum.

Anyone else care to be a moderator?

As for Tosh's moderating, I cannot see what the issue is. It's a storm in a teacup and to me, it's all about having a go at someone just for the sake of it which often happens on this forum.

Anyone else care to be a moderator?

Well said Ross, I could read Tosh's posts all day, some very deep and thought provoking stuff on the mad section of the forum.

I agree with Tosh's post on Internet grief. Mass mawkishness is all over Facebook and is often vomit inducing. I also think that those that type rip under those type of threads demonstrate their insincerity by not feeling strongly enough or having enough respect to hit the caps key in order to type RIP.

One minute these people are pouring out their "grief" and the next minute they're re-posting right wing racist drivel.

Tosh why not just say sorry and put this behind you. Your comment was in bad taste as falling and getting injured is a fear to all of us in this industry. You are a mod and should set some sort of example as most mods before you. But been human you  will step out of line some times. So grow a bit bigger and do the right thing.

If you look back through his posts he mentions how he was a mod on a previous occassion

Now surely people don't do things like that --->sprays screen with peanuts while trying not to laugh

I'm not frightened of falling and getting injured - I rarely work at height, and when I do, I ensure I'm safe - so why should I apologise to you, because of your own personal fears?

But if it makes you feel better, I'm sorry.

There you go, pet.

Does the rest of him still work?

I'm sure those so upset at Tosh's nasty nasty remarks will of course have checked at the hospital he was airlifted to. After all, they were so concerned about the unfortunate man's welfare that I would not consider that for a moment that the concern they had was just a fleeting thought of sentiment only.

In all honesty, the remark was aimed at Jakey, from a previous discussion we had about ladder use and him being faster than a wpf on ladders.

And you know the grief directed towards me was from either members I've annoyed - like Lickers who always pops up in these instances (he's like a stalker ;D), or ladder users.

But in the words of Gloria Stienam, "The truth will set you free, but first it will 'pee' you off".

They're not arsed about some window cleaner who has knacked himself in a fall; not really.  It wouldn't be difficult to e-mail the reporter from the news item on page 1 of the thread, find out the details, and organise a whip-round for some flowers.  But no-one, including myself, has the motivation to do so.  We don't care enough.

And yes, I understand the irony of your post.

Yup, I admit I couldn't really careless about some window cleaner completely unknown to me who had an accident due to circumstances also completely unknown to me in a place I've never heard of.

I tend to only relate to people and what goes on in their lives on a personal level to people who have in some way a relationship to me. If someone who was a member on here who suffered similar, I'd feel different about it.

It's sad, but people do fall from ladders for what ever reason.

Life goes on.

This is a window cleaning forum, a window cleaner gets hurt and he jokes about it,what a idiot.

Exactly.

And yes moderators shouldn't be involved in the banter, because they are supposed to be the moderator, not another one of us. There here to be the plum line not the exception....

This forum is getting a bit ridiculous, time to spend more time off it me thinks, all you get is people being incredibly opinionated,

E.g, when I said about trad being quicker on SOME houses, all of a sudden a marathon thread shows up with People banging on about personal issues etc etc,

Tosh shouldnt be involved in that sort of thread, rather should of warned us all earlier and locked it earlier if needs be. Instead he joined in, then locked it  ???

Off to the other window cleaning forum now  ;D ;D ;D ;D
