Clean It Up

I currently fill the tank with tap water then run through the di. As the weather is causing me problems in the morning I've added IPA to the tank today worked this afternoon then checked TDS and its reading 17ppm. I've not taken note of the last resin change so I'm assuming it's coincidental that the TDS is high.
Now the IPA has a TDS of 000 but would it have an adverse effect on the resin???
I also don't like the idea of heater left on at night in case it catches fire.
-
Have you checked the dosage you would need to prevent freezing? IPA is a solvent so would probably ruin resin.
-
Have you tried filling the tank wwith hot water?
It's what I do when it's freezing.
-
i switch the oil filled radiator on that i have in the back of my van just before i go to bed.same for my battery charger.
they are both plugged into an extension lead in the van so all i need to do is flick the switch on the plug socket. ;)
RESULT? frost free pump/tank and a fully charged battery by morning. :)
-
Checked an old thread from may2014 and someone was using "just a glug" to a 600l tank. I added 100ml to 350l.
Experimental risk and stupidly never checked the TDS beforehand!
Act first ask questions later ::)roll
I'm a bit of a tight arse numpty so didn't want to waste filling the tank with hot at night to prevent the freezing.
Instead I lose out on work!

I've got petrol in the back so don't want to risk it and can't be bothered lifting the generator out and in. Also no outside socket.

Thanks Dave.
Has anyone tried this before? Surely someone has, and did it effect the resin
-
I shall conduct a test, one receptical 1% IPA another 10% IPA. Feck it's not below freezing tonight
-
At least it'll be useful for removing sticky labels.

Changed the resin last night, back to Tulsion. So 350l of warm water with IPA through two DI vessels and bubbles coming out all day. If the windows weren't filthy I'd have though someone had been round it trad.
Now I don't know why there were bubbles all day whether it was the hose (which happened when new), new resin with warm water (40-20C) or the very small amount of IPA. But it was cleaning the FILTHY windows and drying quickly, is this not what Vision dose?

are you sure it wasnt VISION you put in your tank? ;D ;D

No, it's ISOPROPANOL :D I don't think Vision is alcohol based.
It's bubbling because IPA is a wetting agent and so reduces surface tension. Nasty stuff though and very flammable when neat.
-
At £10.70 for 5L I would assume it's a lot cheaper :)
adding 100ml to 350L isn't going to change the freezing point but I'll keep with it for next two days to see if it has any cleaning benefit then I'm off next week so I will read up on old posts including Vision.
Only time will tell if it damages the resin and by then I'll have the outside socket and hot tap fitted, just in time for spring!
-
;D five litres of Vision would cost around £300!!!!! A twenty five litre barrel would only be £750 - bargain. ;D
IPA has been used by a few guys on here in the past but it doesn't do that much - evaporates pretty quick too.
-
5L of vision would last you about 3 years!!(£100 a year) ;D
-
You could buy a new gas heater instead - every year!
That's some colossal mark up the boys have got there. ;D
-
Just to update, the resin only lasted around THREE weeks. This may have been obvious to some but to remove any doubt I have sacrificed some Tulsion. I'm now back to filling the tank with pure and running without DI vessels on board.
That way I can add whatever fad I want.

Could I ask where you are that the weather is still causing you problems in the morning ?
My van sits outside at night and I don't do anything unless it goes below minus 1 or 2 and I never have any
problems.
My 4040 R.O. is in the van and I don't even cover it unless it goes below minus 1.
Get yourself a gas heater and run it flat out in the back of the van for about an hour in the morning before heading out and that will thaw anything that might cause you problems.
-
Sorry I'm not getting problems now, I thought I would just update on the before di scenario and how it destroys the resin. I've got petrol in the back so was paranoid about heaters.

vision isn't alcholol based dave, ipa isn't nasty,in truth its used in various concentrations in most everday cleaners, you go to the doctors/hospital,that hand cleaner you clean your hands with?guess what it iso based,i have never tried iso on its own as i prefer to blend iso with "other things",do bubbles mean its a wetting agent?i am confused now dave, clarify this for me

Recently spent a few days up at Creiff hydro and thought the IPA smell was following me, the cleaners were using it on hand rails etc. I didn't know much about it until I bought and then read up. Something else I use is hydrochloric acid which is know as brick cleaner and also used in food (small quantities) You need a degree in chemistry in this line of work.
-
many things people regard as a chemichal are used in food, one for instance is a paint stripper in its purest form but yet has an e number,is used in most cleaners and yet is safe to use in food, ipa sanitizes most things as you now know alan

Kevin, isopropanol is horrible stuff. It's banned for use in the print trade in many countries particularly USA, partially because it's so flammable in it's neat form and partially because of the health implications. Different states seem to put different risks on it, That's why alternatives have been produced. Have a look round the internet for the health implications. Yes, one or two like you will claim it's harmless but the majority won' t. Generally the people who claim it's harmless are the manufacturer's, just Google health implications of isopropanol and read it.
I certainly wouldn't be happy breathing in isopropanol vapour no matter how dilute I had thirty years in the print trade and saw many chemicals come and go, even got a dose of cancer but whether that's related to chemical use - who knows?.
Yes it's also a wetting agent.
That is the only reason it's used in print - to reduce surface tension of pure water in lithography. Other industries use it as a solvent. The stuff evaporates so fast that it is normally cooled on a printing press to about eight degrees in it's mixed form. Probably not a good idea to keep it stored in bulk anywhere near your house/garage because it's as bad as petrol regarding flammability.
Kevin, you as a chemist and blender of products should know all this ::)roll
