I am after a new van now and have been going round in circles. I have a T5 Kombi at the moment but running out of room so would like a panel van. VW too expensive new and you have to pay for fresh air as a extra. Ford transit custom is nice to drive and new Vivaro i tested out but its a 1.6 ? So come on fellas what would you go for ? Few grand for deposit and contract hire for £200 ish a month. Vivaro was 170 pm and transit 220pm. Cheers
-
If I was to contract hire I would go for a Transit Custom LWB. If I was buying I would get a couple of years old VW Transporter, a nice one.
-
Lwb you reckon tom ? Is short wheelbase to small?

that looks ok ? Think the deal i looked at was 18 months which may be better not sure ;D
-
The new vivaro engines are genuis. Same power out of a 1.6 as the 2.0 apparently. They can nowadays get high power out of low size engines. On the vivaro it has a long load secret compartment. I quite like the new vivaro.
-
It defo is on my top 3 just cant decide its so hard !!! >:(
-
That's my only gripe with my custom. I wish i had a lwb some days, but other times i dont. Luckily another van does PW GutterVac so no issue for me i guess.
I can fit both in the van with my setup. They are just smaller versions.
If you do go for the custom you will get some great deals on 290's trends and limited's
DON'T go for the bog standard one, its pants. Min is the trend!
Just silly things like power fold mirrors, reverse cameras, HID lighting. All i thought were gimmicks, now i wonder how i managed without em lol Even aircon is lush lol.
125 model pulls my 850L fine, 100 model i would be struggling.
Only main issue with the custom is MPG is shocking. I get 26-30 usually 27.5 Havent even fitted the diesel hot system yet, so no doubt i will have to work in all but the nastiest tropical storms to pay my bills ::)roll

That would be my preference as I would go for a 900 ltd tank and have room for pressure washer or gutter vac. The do a really high payload one.
-
That sounds good as im going to look into driveway cleaning as a add on this year. Thats interesting you say about the fuel economy ? Thats pretty poor for a new van. They reckon that 1.6 vivaro can do 46mpg (unloaded lol )
-
You might get 30-32 if you drive really really slowly. Lol
-
Viva seems to tick all the boxes
-
Vw transporter best van IMO there is drives better than a lot of cars
-
I have had 2 VWs now but i think they are living on reputation now ? The others have now caught up with them.

I would be wary of the 1.6 in a van that big. I am no expert but it seems to me the engine has to work too hard.

+1.
They're focussing marketing on BHP. Which is fine. But carrying weight, like WFP does, it's the torque figure that's important.
-
Old vivaro 2.5 310nm of torque new vivaro 1.6 biturbo 320nm of torque. Got to be an improvement. Tech specs are on the internet guys.:-)
-

I get 550 ish from £75 diesel at the moment on my custom
depends how you drive, I'm old and wise ;D

its not just how I drive though. Most work custom vans give poor mpg :(

But how hard would a 1.6 engine have to work to achieve that? Surely there is increased risk of engine wear and various faults arising.
-
Wacking a turbo on a smaller engine always ends well lol. Let alone a biturbo.
I bet a biturbo setup for stop starting will be horrible for it.
-
Ford have never been known for economy. My new connect returns 30.9 according to the trip.
Claimed mpg from manufactures are just a fudge imo

I like the new Mercedes Citan extra long wheelbase with the rear quarter panelled and 5 seater with flexible bulkhead that moves with the folding rear seats. 795kg payload 1.5 diesel with good mpg and cheap insurance. Roomy in rear as a van and practical as a car.
-
I wouldn't worry about a 1.6 engine. Trust me, VX & their partners know more about engine building than any window cleaner. ;)
I ran a doblo with 400ltr system + trad gear for 4.5 years, that van has a 1250 turbo diesel engine in it. It never missed a beat & blew my old 1.9 Kangoo engine into the weeds!!
I now run a dispatch 1.6 with 500ltr system & you wouldn't even know there was anything in the back!!
-
I have heard too many bad things about the 1.6 Dispatch. Even a guy at my local Citroen dealer advised me not to buy one. Hope fully yours will stay reasonably trouble free.

They look 'orrible!
Same as the new style Doblo/Combo's.
Ugly.

They do a LWB Combo now. Good idea.

Brimmed my tank and it said 469 miles to empty. Going to Swindon today so will see what it does on a run. Only got a 100L on though lol
-
I have the new vivaro fully loaded we get on average 32 mpg , really I cant recommend it enough though its a really lovely van

Yep never buy French cars, notoriously unreliable...
-

Vauxhall though....
I have heard from the local post men that the new combos leak through the roof, I wouldn't trust a combo nor French vans...
Stick to ford merc and vw.... Saying that, all vans these days are becoming very reliable, still wouldn't buy French though !
-
I have the old shape dispatch 2.0hdi. Owned from new for 9 years and been as good as gold. From what I hear the new shape is not as reliable so I have decided to keep it a few more years. I know it will start costing me more on maintenance but still cheaper than buying a new van.

lol the merc is a renault kangoo with a merc badge

the most reliable vans I have ever had have been fiat funnily enough, and the vivaro is a Renault engine, i think you get bad and good in everything, these days they are all pretty good
-
Got to Swindon and still got 460 miles til empty haha.

True! Thought it looked suspiciously like the ugly kangoo

My impression is that vans are becoming more unreliable as they are being built/designed with ever increasing amounts of technology.
One of the worst things on modern vehicles is the sensors. Got rid of a previous vehicle because of starting to get problems with sensors and my mum had to get rid of a perfectly good (in other respects) diesel astra because it would go into limp mode and the dealer could not discover why.
