I was wondering has anybody managed to fit a gas heater with a frost stat like the diesel ones have.?

yes mine has  one it was a professional install by procare products in Essex ,
but  it is easy enough to diy I believe.

Spring Controllers make a Frostat. It is now also good for gas heaters. Needs to be the very latest model.
