Title: PC or Mac, whats your preference?
Post by: lal on January 14, 2015, 08:57:19 am

Hi Guys & Gals, need to get a new computer soon, was thinking of getting an all in one desktop, being using a
laptop for some years now but its getting a bit knackered now with visitors to the house using it and abusing it,
was dropped on the floor once by someone I wont mention and screen was cracked, so now I want a desktop of
sorts that will stay on a desk permanatly, locked away from unauthorized users.
I like the look of the imacs, I know there generally more expensive, plus I've no experience with macs always used
windows, just wondering what  most of you use macs or PC's, pro's and cons, any advice given I would be grateful.

 Best regards
 Lal

Mac does what it does flawlessly - but it does a lot less than windows.

Windows machines have their faults (personally I love windows 8 though) - but the software is a fraction of the price, and there's a lot more available for free. I can get a lot more productivity out of a windows machine than a Mac one at the same cost.

Its your laptops that are under powered for Windows. Every time it comes out, it uses more resources.
Mac has less going on, hence quicker.
Windows should boot fast if your pc is good. My pc takes 5 seconds from bios to operating system.
After time windows gets screwed,as all OS do. Reformat once a year sorts it out.
Windows doesn't collect a virus any quicker. Those porno sites are full of them. I know, ive had a few  ;)
Good anti virus and check for adware and you should be ok

Does it have to be either/or these days or can you have the best of both worlds by partitioning a hard drive and have a partition that simulates a Mac?  I've used many O/S's down the years but never tried Mac.

I've got an iMac and a Windows 7 laptop loaded with Ubuntu.

I'd never go back to using Windows.

It's only when you use something else for a while that you realise just how bad Windows really is.

The program I saw uses Windows to emulate a Mac. It still has all the drawbacks of Windows as it uses Windows software.

You can download and install a Linux os (Ubuntu, Lubuntu, LWDE ) along side Windows which gives a duel boot option, i.e. either Linux or Windows.

good idea. I used to duel boot XP and 7. As some games etc only worked on XP

I have both. Mac all day everyday. I've had it 7 or 8 years and it still out perfoms my pc which is only 3 month old. Dread to think what a pc that is 7/8 years old would be like. I'm guessing you would have to turn it on the day before you wanted to use it

Swapped to Mac 4 years ago. Never go back to windows - the amount of windows pc machines Ive been through is ridiculous! Virus ridden, slow!! I used to be a pro wedding photographer and I only wish I had a Mac in those days so the odd few weddings I do now for friends are a dream to process on a Mac. They are catching up with different software now and of course the more Mac becomes popular then software companies will do dual version software for both.

Don`t upgrade your window to the latest version of windows as they need more and more power. And your machine will fly.

The responses on this thread are from a self-selected sample of people who could be bothered to answer.

Put it this way: Windows has 91% market share, Mac 5% ( http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/mac-vs-pc-myth-busting-consumer-guide/ ) , so the sample on this thread cannot possibly be representative.  Your statement "Macs seem very popular on here" should perhaps read "people with Macs who use this forum are very keen to say what they are using".

I'm not saying don't buy a Mac, just that basing  your decision on answers on this thread is not perhaps the most logical thing to do.

The major difference between Mac and PC is control of the hardware. You can only get Mac's made by apple - but you can get Windows based PC's built by any 10 year old with an ebay account.

This means that every Mac has hardware perfectly configured for its OS, but there's a lot of windows machines with random combinations of spare parts that often don't clash or that are simply insufficient for the operating system.

If you spend the same on a PC as you would on a Mac (Macs aren't cheap) and do your research first, you'll get a very decent machine.

I use windows, have done since I bought my first laptop ~15 years ago. It does everything I want and more and at a good speed too. It only really gets used for invoicing / quotes / emails these days though, most web browsing is done on a phone or tablet.

Mac is pretty poop tbh.

If you just want basic use of a computer internet email etc then fine, but thy really are overpriced piles of dog turd if you know anything about computers.

The only thing that used to be great about them was no viruses, these days windows is getting better and better with its firwewall and security features whilst macs CAN get viruses although they are less susceptible

Pcs offer better support for hardware and much more software is available, most of the world uses pcs so formats for certain files for sharing is better suported

Pcs much better upgradabilty and future proofing, better for gaming, music production.

MAC is poo for anyone apart from a staus sybol, like the iphone which is also poo compared to an android

Why are they poo?

You've explained why you think windows computers are used as the most popular type of computer but that doesn't by definition mean Macs are poo. It just means windows are probably more affordable.

MAC is poo is quite a sweeping statement, could you clarify why you say that please?

That may once have been the case but it's not anymore. Windows 8 uses less resources than Windows 7.

I use a Mac by the way. I got fed up with messing about with Windows trying to make it work when I could actually have been doing work...

For those with a bit of tech know how and wanting the best of both worlds, check out how to make a Hackintosh.

I'd like to know why you say that too.
It seems that there are not many people willing to defend windows based PCs but those with macs are saying the complete opposite. Definately not poop my friend. If you have owned one then give your opinion, but if not then how can you actually give an opinion. I spent £1300 once on a windows pc for wedding photography purposes and it very quickly went wrong or wasn't powerful enough. The Mac I bought 4 years ago is STILL powerful enough and hasn't gone wrong yet. No virus, still superbly quick. With all the anti virus software on the windows machine I still got a 3 Trojan virus on it.
Macs rock!

Any thing Apple is silly money for what you get. As with Iphones. You hate them or love them. They are good for what they do, but you are tied to apple and all that stuff.

Most laptops are rubbish because they are so underpowered. This slows things down and crashes.

If you set up a PC to be dedicated to basic tasks like a MAC, pc's are faster

My PC is mega fast, but it swater cooled etc. A bit OTT for most on here  ;)
Microsoft certainly isn't my favourite company, but better than Apple...in my view

If you don't have anti virus then how do you know you've got no viruses?

My card provider scanned my network the other day because I need to remain IPC DSS compliant in order to use their online payment terminal - no malware or viruses were found.

Most anti-virus software is more damaging to a PC's performance than the viruses themselves. Don't click suspect links, don't visit dodgy sites, don't open dodgy emails, ensure your firewall is set up correctly - it's fairly straightforward.

I had to change out my PC recently. It was still plenty quick enough but unfortunately Microsoft decided to stop supporting XP.

I love my PC running Windows 8.1. It's a Chillblast gaming machine and is fast! People saying PCs are slower than Macs aren't comparing like for like. Yes, a £400 pc will be slower than the latest Macs, but a £1,200 pc will thrash a £1,200 Mac. If you aspire to the Apple lifestyle {sn****r} then go ahead and buy a Mac.

I bought a refurbished (latest spec at time) Mac book air in apple nyc last october - much cheaper there. Its absolutely superb for my basic needs. I mainly only use it for emails and Internet use. The other main use is for cleaner planner which is all online anyway so happy days.

I have a general rule that its my laptop in the house and is work based only so its out of bounds to my kids. Ive seen the damage they've done to my mrs laptop by clogging the memory.

I've also cleaned many internal office windows and seen generally windows laptops seem more popular, I'm sure they are more efficient for top spec ones but it all depends on what you want out of the machine which must make your decision.

Seems to me like you've decided on an Apple computer and that's fair enough.

Reading your original post, you are concerned about visitors abusing your machine. You should bear in mind that the main drawback of Apple is the over inflated price tag. A sht one will cost you £1k and you're not going to want anyone else touching it.

All these people telling you that they've had their Macs for years - never had any problems - still as quick as the day they bought it - blah blah - are either extremely lucky, living in cloud la la land or just flat out liars. Yes the build quality is good but they have issues just like anything else. I have a MacBook pro (I say I, I mean she). It cost about £1500 a little over a year ago. Recently the OS updated and when it came back on the graphics card was fried. Being just out of warranty I had to argue with the "genius" in the ishop to get it fixed for free. They wanted £300 before they even looked at it but I started making a scene. Anyway they took it for a week and when I got it back it was sorted.

For £1500 I could have had a half decent PC a shtty laptop and a nexus 7 for angry birds, and I wouldn't have had to deal with the jumped up little sht in the ishop who thinks he's God's gift to computing because a clever marketing manager decided to give him the title "genius". Just sayin like.

Just to add, anyone like me who has an ipad2 will know what a heap of sht it is since the last iOS update. They partially fixed it with an update, but the new apps are practically unusable as they are so slow. Soupy is spot on.

Buy an iPad Air 2 then, I thought is window cleaners were on £500 a day!
But that's the point. Once you get into Apple products you are constantly prompted to update your system, but your hardware can't cope so you have to scrap it and upgrade. You have demonstrated my point far better than I could. Oh, and yesterday it was £505.  ;)

1k for a poo one ?

Mine was 1k and has by far been the most reliable computer I have owned , the 1200 quid fell laptop I had before lasted 7 months before I binned it .
MacBook air doesn't need to boot up each time , I just open the lid and it's on , battery lasts hours , doesn't run hot , and it had not slows down in 18 months ......that's not luck it's the way the operating system works .

I have 128 gb of hard drive and its plenty , no bloat ware , similar programs are smaller on Mac for instance word etc .

I have already said, I own a Mac. It's fine, does what she wants it to do but it's not a proper computer, I've tried to use it for work, it was hopeless.

Not even then. They do lack in functionality but they are good enough for her to do the Tesco shopping on, all you need to do is install chrome or Firefox then at least it works as a netbook.

i bought a new laptop 5 month or so ago on windows 8 and its useless,

Useless how?

Had to re install windows several times , wod grind to a halt randomly , slow , always ran hot and was very noisy .........then it started smoking from from the cooling fan .

It was also made entirely of plastic and don't get me started on it updating on every start up , waiting for it to boot up , viruses even
Though it had virus software .

My MacBook is made from metal and is designed to cool down with very little use of the almost silent fan .....the metal acts as a heat sink .

I don't get why you get so annoyed about people liking apple stuff ? Soapy t!t w*%k

I use there stuff because it does what I need it to and it just works , all the time , no messing or waiting for boot up etc .

I don't get annoyed Robert. You're the one randomly calling people names, not me. I have no loyalty to any particular brand. It tends to be Apple fanboys that get wound up in these types of debates not the other way round. Don't worry though, I understand; you've bought your Apple product and you've every right to defend it to people who think that you have wasted your money.

Sounds to me like there was an issue with the computer you bought. The sale of goods act entitles you to a replacement for a faulty electronic device if it fails within the first 12 months.

You can buy better built laptops and can even get ones made of aluminum of that's what floats your boat. That's one of the main advantages of PC s over Macs - choice.

Being on the next OS won't enrich your life though, will it?

For me, it's the same with the phones. I used to always get the new one because it was new. But I got the iPhone 5 then the 5s I think and the only difference, really, was the fingerprint sensor. Which I turned off ::)roll
I think I'll get the iPhone 8 or such (sooner if they make a waterproof one) and I'd like a new iPad 'cause the children have scratched the one I've got but it can wait.

hi lal i bought a brand new acer aspire laptop with windows 8.1 just before xmas.£230 from asda.its very light and the battery lasts around 7 -8 hours without charge.after a few teething problems  ive got it running very smoothly.

i only use mine for internet banking and shopping, cleaner planner, printing invoices etc and CIU(mainly).

my last acer aspire laptop(windows 7) lasted 5 years with no issues or viruses whatsoever. :)

good cheap budget PC! :)

WINDOWS 8.1 also comes with its own  free anti virus software already built into the system.as long as you have automatic updates turned on and firewall and smartscreen filters you should have no problems. ;)

Why are they poo?

You've explained why you think windows computers are used as the most popular type of computer but that doesn't by definition mean Macs are poo. It just means windows are probably more affordable.

MAC is poo is quite a sweeping statement, could you clarify why you say that please?

+1
Macs rock!
Cheers Chez

If your £1300 pc wasnt dectroying a £1300 mac then you have been ripped off. Theres really not much to go wrong with a pc, as long as you keep on top of anti virus and clean up tasks. Always back up all your files and programs.

If you know what you are doing with computers a pc is always the better choice in terms of hardware, software, driver support, upgradeabilty and most importantly cost.

Filesharing and online collaboration is another plus.

MACS are not inherently poop, but you pay lot more money for something less supported and lack of future upgradeability.

If you have a few grand to spend every few years then fair enough buy a MAC.

Macs rock!

With a Mac you don't have to keep on top of anti virus / cleanup tasks / de fragging etc etc and you don't need to replace every few years .

My friend had one of the first Mac laptops and it is still working at the same speed as it was when new ......only the battery is knackered .

Why are they poo?

You've explained why you think windows computers are used as the most popular type of computer but that doesn't by definition mean Macs are poo. It just means windows are probably more affordable.

MAC is poo is quite a sweeping statement, could you clarify why you say that please?

+1

Anti Virus runs in the back ground. You don't defrag SSD drives. Old school  ;D

I know how anti virus works or usually doesn't ...... i have had loads of pc's from cheap ones to ridiculously expensive ones .

I have had virus's on every single one no matter what anti virus software i used , including microsofts own one .

18 months with a mac , no antivirus software slowing it down ........not a single virus.

I went to pay for my coal delivery a couple of days ago.

Handed over the cash - the fella made a note in his payments book of the transaction.

No long protracted start-up, no virus, no fragging, no hardware/software conflicts.

You can't beat a well sharpened HB pencil and piece of 90 GSM A4.
