Title: Maximum time travelling
Post by: Nick_Thompson on December 29, 2014, 04:37:18 pm
A question that has been posed a number of times in the past, but I was just curious as to the present general consensus; for the right money, how much time would you spend travelling to work a regular monthly round?

Distance travelled is irrelevant.

It's the price that's important.

I'd happily drive 2 hours to do a £300 job that takes 4 hours, and then drive home. Obviously wouldn't do it for a £10 house though.

I have a day's work every 4 weeks that is in a town 25 miles away. It's a good enough earner for me now that I have ditched all the messers.

I also have a holiday home that I clean annually. It's 55 miles away, but again it's a good earner.

I regularly travel 45 minutes.
I like it.
I like the drive home with a Costa Express and music on. Happy days.

Hi Nick.  My furthest jobs are just inside the M25 to the north and on the A272 to the south; 20 - 30 minutes driving depending on traffic/time of day etc. Most of my work is closer though.

correct no point in doing work on your doorstep if it's bad money even if it's down the road what's the point,go where the money is

Compact and Close is ideal.

However I have some compact covering one weeks work per month in a village ten miles away which takes about 20 minutes to get to.

I will travel if I have more that 6 customers and if less I charge a premium charge of 5 quid extra  until I get at least 6. Its the way I can afford to build a round away from my home turf. So it I have five custies @5 quid each, it pays for the fuel and time to drive there. Once I have 6 I will reduce there cost by 1 quid, when I have 10 I will reduce by another quid and so on.

I live in one of the most compact housing areas for miles around.  The two big headaches are parking and loads of terraced housing where there is no access to the back. So I have to go a little way across town for any reasonable work and a bit further out for better quality work.  The flip side is that by living in such an area, it keeps my housing costs lower.

Thanks for the replies and advice chaps.

Up untill now, practically all of my work has been located near enough to be reached within a 15-20 minutes drive, with the vast majority of it being situated on my doorstep.

For the first time in 33 years I find myself contemplating the somewhat dubious prospect of working a two day a week round 38 miles away. At an early enough time that could equate to just a 50 minute drive, but as much of that journey is along the infamous M25, I would expect to encounter the usual delays.

The round itself is comprised of some very prestigious properties that are very well priced having been worked by the same individual for the last 50 odd years. Many of his customers have been loyal to window cleaning endeavours for decades.

It all sounds so very tempting, but I don't want to bite off more than I can chew and end up regretting the commitment to that kind of "long distance"
Commute.

I'm scheduled for a more thorough tour of the rounds layout within the next few days, but at the moment I remain ambivalent.

Thanks for listening!

Nick

Sounds like it could be quite lucrative work as I have a rough idea of the types of areas.  I used to work building extensions on people's houses near the M25 (in the westerly direction) before the M25 was even there.  Very wealthy areas.  The only issue at that sort of distance is how much of it needs to be pre-arranged.  It can be a sticking point to schedule it - particularly in winter.  Even going east along the motorway there are some decent places at that distance - though I know west a bit better.
Decent prices can be made to look ordinary if there's a lot of negotiation regarding access but otherwise it sounds great.

From what I can gather, Walter, there's absolutely no pre-arranging to be done prior to the windows being cleaned. Over the years the customers have also become unusually accustomed to a rather irregular cleaning frequency due to the fact that this particular window cleaner liked his holidays, which were usually protracted and a little more unremitting than his cleaning regime.

That sounds like it's worth going for then IMO.  The better prices ought to (hopefully) more than compensate for the higher cost of van maintenance and diesel.  Just take plenty of change for those pay and display machines on the M25 :)

We cover a 35 - 40 mile radius for regular window cleaning work.

I don't mind the driving .. it breaks the day up a bit.

In the summer we start on the furthest house away and work back towards base... In the winter we start at the closest house so that we get started a bit earlier to make sure we get everything done before it gets dark.

I would travel a couple of house each way for the right money.
