Check the wires for loose connection, and take the end bell off and see I'd there's any carbon build up on the armature.

Can you run the motor while the bell  end is off? Might point towards the problem

The end bell houses the brushes Mike, so the motor won't run without it.

Guys I have checked for loose wiring and all seems fine. The live & neutral from the pump connect to a small white plastic box shaped unit with 4 connectors (compacitator) i think its called do those need replacing or give problems. The pump is a year old and has had a lot of work through it. I have thought of just buying a new pump completely. The bell end brushes were completely worn so could that have caused damage to the rotor. Hmmm me thinks a new pump is needed.
Thanks Andrew and Mike for your imput

Did you blow out the carbon dust from the motor before fitting the new end bell?

Hi Jamie NO i didn't just gave a light brushing and light sanding of the brass bit which was pretty blackened however it stopped yesterday I just switched it on a few minutes ago and it seemed to run ok again but doesen't sound right bit of light knocking sound :P think maybe it's like me worn out!!! it has lasted through a busy year.
