Off to see a 1.8 Transit Connect tomorrow 55 plate 130,000 miles.
Present owner two years, selling as needs bigger van. 6months mot and tax.
Body and cab tidy, ply lined, used as a plasterers van but clean.
Private sale at £1,350 ono.
Is around 1,200 about right and is there anything I need to check for?....(yes it has an engine! and four wheels)
You know what I mean, common faults that could prove costly.
Cam belt done about two years ago so prob due?

Check the sills for rust.
I have a customer with an 05 connect that needed to replace his, not cheap apparently.

I've got one, should be bullet proof, check for service history, cambelt only needs doing every 100k, should be absolutly fine, check oil has been changed regularly, and take it for a test drive, there usually pretty bullet proof mate

Connects are good vans, they don't really rust, the cam let is every 100,000 or 10 years, so check to make sure it has been done, if not knock some money off and get is replaced ASAP, they don't cost much on the connect, £150 ish.

Amazing vans I ran mine for 6 years before needing to get something bigger. Never missed a beat, sold it with 150k on the clock for £1300 as it was still cracking. Major down point, if you have any leaks from your system, be prepeared for very wet feet!

6months mot and tax?
Is that still the case? I thought you had to re-tax from scratch now - or are discs bought before 30/9 still valid for a new buyer

Plasterer van in good nick, check if the ply lining is new and covering up plaster on inside body.

100000 miles about 50 times to Barbados and back roughly lol,there good little vans I had 1 but parts break on all vans. I wouldn't put anymore than 400ltrs in it if you want it to move

theres a rear axle mount fault with the early ones in later life check these for rot

I got mine done for £160. Replaced with a non DMF.
I've done 165 000 in mine. Bearing in mind I'm not the gentlest driver, cambelt, gearbox (ouch) and clutch. Best van I've ever owned by a long way.

With all respect your answer on van threads is always to buy new you need to realise that not everyone has a huge round and a good credit rating nothing wrong with secondhand vans if your carefull.i agree with you on the fact if its possible get a new van and only if you can afford the re payments on it, Iv bought a 57 plate expert 1.6hdi I know you slated them quite bad but its a nice looking van yea a little slow and maybe it will break but that's what I save for in advance, please don't take any offence but a new van to alot of people is not even an option also I had my Peugeot expert x reg 1.9d for years its done well over 250k now and in the 3 years I owned it it cost about a grand in bills. There are some good once out there

Show me a rusty connect ! I sold mine when it was 10 years old, 120k no rust, even driving around now old connects don't suffer with rust , they may be old and crappy , but not rusty. transits are a different kettle of fish, they rust terribly.

Show me a rusty connect ! I sold mine when it was 10 years old, 120k no rust, even driving around now old connects don't suffer with rust , they may be old and crappy , but not rusty. transits are a different kettle of fish, they rust terribly.
Rear sills were rusty on mine and most 10 year olds will be the same. DIY £20 fix.
Clutch was less than £300 don't remember exactly but never anything like 1k.

no offence taken dean I understand completely, in my experience old vans are a waste of money been there done that and got the bills to prove it, vans get used and abused new is always going to be best

Rear sills (both) had rust and the garage quoted £220 they said it's common on them but other than my clutch, exhaust and later the flexi pipe including catalyst they said it's a very good van. I fixed both sills myself although the near side wasn't done right as you can see in the photo it came back.

Get a mig welder and weld sill plates on :) iv done a few if you can't find someone to do a cash job :) not that bad tho they only have to be spot welded every inch or so in my exsperience.
Scrimble I understand what your saying I hope my van at least lasts a couple of years. My next van id like it to be new :)

If I'm driving a vehicle I want to know it's as roadworthy as it can be, so with the maintenance and repairs I paid, it may have been better to keep it longer but as it was sold I recon a new one on contract wouldn't be far off the cost of ownership. So to sum it up I didn't lose. I think!

Transit Connects are the best vans.
I bought mine back in October 2012 with 108k miles, full service history one prev owner 08 plate.
Got a year left on the finance, so i'm either going to keep it and chuck someone in it to do the work for me and get another 4 year old van to build up more rounds, or keep the business as it is; and trade it in for a the newest model I can afford.

how do you find them on fuel when carrying weight ???? we had one years ago with over 260k on the clock and was doing around 38 mpg driven like it been stolen on dhl work
been offered a 230 on a 12 plate cheap and was going to replace our transit 59 reg 2.2 6 speed as its on its last legs , just trying to see if its worth it going down a size for easy of parking ect or just buy anthor transit

i love my connect t230.i dont do much mileage in it though(about 2500-3000 miles a year)as i only use it for work.
its an 05 with just over 100,000 miles on the clock.ive just had a new starter motor fitted and cambelt changed.i put a brand new battery and 4 new tyres on it when i bought it in april this year.
it pulls fine with a full 500L tank and all my other gear(90bhp version).its surprisingly roomy inside as well.perfect for a sole trader window cleaner IMO.

prob due to high mileage.im sure susans partner works absolutely miles away(200 mile round trip i think judging by some of her other posts from a while back)

The older Tddi was slightly better on fuel than the latest Tdci models when driven hard. That was the general market concensus when the Connects first came out.
The motors are total different. The Tdci performs better and is supposed to run more efficiently, hence lower emissions. But a driver thrasting them negates any fuel saving advantage they had.

Yes I worked in commercial sales with Citroen and Ford. Also worked for an Isuzu garage with the 3.5 to 7.5 ton category. Unfortunately, not being in the trade any longer means that I no longer have the latest information regarding new models.
One of the things that I found interesting is the performance of different engines in the same van over time. The Citroen Dispatch/Peugeot Expert/Fiat Scudo spring to mind. This model (as did others) came in 1.9, 1.9TD and then 2.0 Hdi (Jtd with the Scudo but was the exact same engine.)
The 1.9 non turbo was gutless, but could be very frugal on fuel if driven quietly. If pushed it didn't use much more fuel. It was a simple engine and bullet proof. The 1.9 turbo diesel was the same engine with a lower compression ratio but with the turbo added. It went like a bomb and when driven hard was fun to drive. Hated the turbo lag though. But it got through diesel like I couldn't believe. When that was replaced by the 2.0Hdi it became a different van. When driven sedately the fuel consumption was a little better than the 1.9 but not by much, but the performance was much better, especially with that 110hp engine. However, there was a big difference in fuel consumption between the 1.9TD and the 2.0Hdi - the Hdi was much better, even when pushed. That 1.9TD was a more aggressive power unit than the replacement Hdi.
The first van mount I had was a 1.9 Citroen Relay non turbo. It was replaced with my current vehicle, a 2.0hdi Citroen Relay. The performance is fine for me, far superior to the 1.9 but fuel consumption on average is higher on the Hdi because its easier to drive it harder.
In the early days no one would buy a Vito Van ( 1998 - 2004) due to engine and body issues. If someone wanted to trade one in, we didn't usually spend time on it as the owner wouldn't be happy with the trade-in price we could offer. But the same applied every where else. Even MB won't buy good stock off the trade.
The Renault Trafic had just been launched for a few months when the motor trade was warned to stay away from them as trouble. If you traded one in you had to have plenty of profit in the deal as it would go in comeback repairs. It didn't take long for them to get a bad reputation.
When you compare Ford Transit to the competition, the Transit is by far a better structurally built van, but they have never bothered to sort the rust problems out. As a spray painter recently said - its appears to be Fords and Sprinters built in obsolescence. The Transit Connects seem to do better with rot than the Transits do, but sills are something to watch as some do better than others.
My Son in Laws Transit Connect van originally was a van sold to the British army in Cyprus. It was imported back to the UK and sold. Could it be that vehicles destined to warm dry countries have less rust protection than others destined for wetter countries? Why protect again rust when a vehicle is going into the Middle East? It a costly addition that's not necessary. It just a thought. SIL's van has needed work on the sills. His is a 53 plate LWB with 57k on the clock.
Again the Tddi is a more simple engine than the Tdci replacement, but emissions dictated the upgrade.

I had an older model 55 plate. Rusty cills which you cannot replace, rotten suspension mounts. Check for tight gearbox which can lead to gearbox problems. Hand brake adjusters snapped on mine. water tank leaked and I was constantly bailing out water. Always being over taken by cyclists (exaggeration, but not hugely) Other than that they feel like they are built well. Make sure that you check that the engine management light comes on at when you turn the key but goes out when the engine runs. They suffer with the dashboard lights corroding on the back of the pcb. A new dash isn't cheap but is easy to fix. However the engine management light not coming on mean something more serious. Oh also known for thermostat housing leaks which also went on mine but quite an easy job and air intake before the turbo but after MAF sensor pipe splits due to removal of air filter, the van will feel sluggish and use plenty of fuel or it might just be a transit connect. Out of all the small vans though I found it the best built van. ;D

my son bought 1.8 brand new 09 plate at the time and had nothing but hassle .cluch went after 7k. then wiring loom issuse.wiper motor . he has still got it he is self employed.so money is tight. now the emition sensor is knacked its a £450 part plus labour plus vat.he has been quoted £900 fix.ive been on the forumsto find any issuses and they scuff tyres for fun.aviod like the plague.imo

Had an 04 75 ps connect for 6 years, brilliant van, basic but brilliant.
Bit bullet and bought new one, last May
Brilliant van, same as Jimi windows.
Recommend buying new, best long haul solution.

I've had my 06 plate 220 connect for over 5 years. Never let me down...ever! I've had bits go wrong but only wear & tear items.
This year is the first MOT that's actually cost me any money: exhaust, tyres blah blah.
Having said that, today the heater decided not to work and a wiper has split. I'm not too fussed as the weather is lovely and I can stick a hot water bottle on the seat if it gets cold. I am thinking of getting a bigger van (350 tank at the moment) but hey ho!
