Ive recently got one of these from Gardiners, now im on the minimun supply pressure of 40psi & my tds out of the system is 60-70 ppm and as a result im going through quite a bit of resin quite quickly
Question is if i pump it through the system will that improve the tds out saving me some resin or will it just improve the efficiency of the membranes producing quickly with the same tds value out of the system
Id hate to spend nearly £200 on a pump and not see any improvement in resin use.

70PPM after the RO?
What's your input?
-
Tds from the tap round here is about 450/500 ppm
-
Hi Chris, yes you need to get a booster pump to get the best out of your RO
With the merlin ( earlier version of yours ) mine produced a tds of between 12 and 16 so resin use was minimal.
My 4040 RO comes out at 5 so I don't even use resin atm
Your water is more of less the same as mine

Thanks Darren , i wonder if anyone reasonably near to me has a 240v pump that i can borrow just for a couple of hours to see if it will produce better results bofore i go and shell out for one

Chris, water from mains is same as yours 450 to 500 ppm i have three 150 gal membranes with a 80psi pump this comes out of the membranes at about 10ppm.
A pump would be your best answer as luck would have it i have a spare one in my garage.....
-
Reading the spec on the data sheet it says the rejection rate is 93% at 5.5 bar/80psi bringing the tds down to 35...
-
Spend the money on a decent booster pump.
The Clarke one I use gives 100 psi to the membrane.
-
Yes it has a max inlet pressure of 80 psi

Hi Chris
I would put the money toward a 4021 or 4040 and sell this on Ebay.
Not sure why Alex now supplies these as they aren't very efficient.
One of the local cleaners is on his second one, the first killed by frost, and he goes through plenty of resin even at a tap tds of 115. His current one removes less than 90% of the tap water tds.
The other cleaner got rid of his for a 4040 due to high resin and high volume (hence cost) of waste water. Sold on ebay for not much less than a new one.

Smudger thats great getting it down so low. How do you have your setup and where did you get it from??. I use a pure freedom 4040 with boosterpump but the waste valve is set to just waste or just pure with no adjustment available to make it 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 etc which im guessing js why my tds is 360 into ro and 30's out which rey does my head in as going through a sack of resin every 2 months and a membrane every year which seems a lot compared to others.
Cheers.

Hi Mick,
My 4040 is a pure freedom set-up that came with a van I brought, the waste is controlled by a gate valve with a pre-set hole so I basically open it to flush or close it to produce pure.
I use a dab self priming pump that boosts pressure and water volume to 80 psi
My last membrane lasted around 18 months, but I know I killed it as I did not realise that the carbon filter should have changed every 3 to 4 weeks ( I make on average 1,500 ltrs of pure per day ) so I'm hoping that will help this new membrane ( vy air )
FAO chris - the prefilters on merlins etc.. Are only rated for something like 30 US gallons of use per day so really you need another set of pre filters like carbon and sediment.

Fitting a decent booster pump will greatly benefit the output - both in quality and in production rate. On a decent pressure input of 80psi we have clients who see a 97% rejection ratio and up to 3 litres per minute.

Drop me a line and I can arrange this for you.

I have a friend who uses one of these on 100psi with no problems at all.

Hi Spruce
Whilst we do also sell the 4021 membranes (and 4040s) we find that many clients like the easy option that these PRF-RO units provide. They also are a cheaper option to purchase.
As previously said with the right water pressure they can offer a very easy way of producing RO water. Servicing the PRF-RO is a lot easier than most other commercial grade housings.
It is good to have the option we feel.

I am a bit disapointed with my 4040 ro from pure freedom, my tap pressure is 85psi so no need for a booster pump, still only gets the tds down to 22ppm
I used a 450gpd ro from purefreedom before and when I got rid of it after 4 years service the tds was lower than my 4040! it started off around 3ppm before resin and was up to 16ppm when I stopped using it,
1 bag of resin lasted 4 years, now I have nearly used a bag in 6 months

What's the tap TDS ?
Has it always been this high, what have PF to say about it ?

you have the same setup as me. god knows what im doing wrong, how quick are you filling 1000 litres?? im taking 5-6 hours. my pump is at 80 psi, i use 2x 10 inch filters and change them every 3 months. maybe i have a blockage or something is damaged somewhere in the setup.
cheers.
-
I think you are leaving the filter change to long mick, I use the 20" pre filters and used to change them every 3 to 6 months, that's when my membrane expired quickly, after reading some posts by Alex I realised that the carbon filter is only good for a max 5 weeks with the quantity of water I put through it. Now I change them every 4 weeks.
I am currently using a vyair (hf4 equivalent) membrane 99% rejection rate, it's slower than than the hf5 I had - I haven't fully checked the production rate yet, approx 250 ltrs p/h
The hf5 was belting it out at 400 ltrs p/h, but could only produce 11 TDS

id love to produce at 11.
im getting a new membrane next month, will get a hf4 and swap to 2o inch filters and see if i get any change of production ppm.
cheers.

nick your problem is that tap,u need a tap that you can fine adjust to get the best out of your membraine, its also the cheapest option to try before anything else
-
Lol 1 of these days you will call me mick but cheers franky ;D.

I would have thought PF would have already gone through testing various flows and drilled a relief hole to suit the optimal performance, you can if you wish crack open the valve to allow a little more waste through ( personally this has never improved the TDS output on the pure for me ) but yes, you could simply replace the PF valve with a standard black item and tweak from there just be careful not to have it fully closed
