Title: Video for my website spoiled
Post by: Plankton on November 25, 2014, 05:29:11 pm
First attempt of try a video for my website. Now I have said before that I clean gutters from the ladder but won't use ladders for windows etc and after looking at gutter vac poles I can't justify paying for carbon. So before I spend any more hard earned money on alloy poles I thought I would give the dreaded telescopic lance a try again.
I kept the engine speed down and started on the back gutter and was quite surprised at how easy it was, I've had this pole for over a year and had dismissed it to early. So here is the video of the front gutter clean which could do with an air brush and audio edit. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=793399114036629&l=846258373984111081

How much water do you think went up into the roof space ?

More importantly, how much would potential customers think went into the roof ?

I've got a dreaded telescopic lance in my garage too - it's staying there!

That's one reason I had the ladders there, after I finished I moved some tiles and there was no issue with water ingress.
I have previously slated this way of cleaning gutters but after cleaning them with the engine speed low I may have proved myself wrong.

But if the gutters a full everything just comes out and makes a mess over the house walls and the floor... A gutter vac is much better.

She was more concerned that the drive got dirty. It took about a minute to clean up.

Doubtful.

Problems I forsee with this are its messy, ok on virtually empty gutters, but what about when it's full of moss and grass, also the majority of c rap is going into the down pipe to either block the drains or soak always leading to a more expensive problem for the customer ( for which you could be liable ) and to be honest I can vac quicker than that.

I'm about to cut my tele lance into a 100 pieces !!!

Any that hits the house it can be rinsed easily and I could use tarpaulin to cover any chipped area below, if it's hard surface below then that's easy to clear up.

So what happens to all the crap including broken tiles, roffing mortar and other odd things you find in gutters?

I can just imagine the reaction if I started to jet full gutters out like that as my customers and probably their neighbours too would go ape poope ;D

What are you thinking ?

If we went and did that to a customers property we would be out of business in weeks,

Do it properly spend the money and get Vac system or sub the jobs out to someone how can do it right,  before you mess your business up !

Its amazing how different the replies vary from one post to another. Lee posted "Gutter pressure washing video" only on the 23rd reply (smurf) was there a negative.
Common sense is required regarding what direction you point it and above conservatories this would be very risky as you'll know there could be mortar, tile, nails and even lengths of wood left by builders. However after today I may use this on specific types of houses one of which I've got on Saturday g/f/s
It's got a window with gutter above and sits back over a lower roof. So I may try out the pressure washer along with the ladder and wfp!
As I've said I slated it before but on this particular house the only problem was the wife and the missing hair :D

Or buy a boat...
I've always wanted a boat but if I bought everything that people think is a must have like Grippamax tanks, telescopic scaffolds for cleaning cony's, 18ft extremes etc then I sure as poop wouldn't have the time to use it as I would be working every day to pay for it. :)

Did you buy it for cleaning buildings or gutters. I've only had one type of roof on houses that I have to use it for a small area.

I'm very surprised that nobody has mentioned the deadly ladder unrestrained against the wall.
A question that I've asked before for those who use a vac on domestic is do you use a generator or custys inside plug and if its raining are they keen on you using it.

Yes we always use our genny for every job.

All plugs are ip something (forget the number) but waterproof switches and sockets.
If really pouring down I'd prefer not to do them as I don't like getting that wet, but the van is big enough we run genny from van and I can cover the vac with a waterproof cover

I brought it for doing a sign clean but thinking it would come in handy for other jobs but so far its been as useful a chocolate fire guard.

The pole has been sitting next to the rotary cleaner which I thought would be useful as well!
I'll try again it on Saturday and see if I generate some more business from the inquisitive neighbours.

Why not just stick em on fleebay and put whatever you get for them towards a guttervac which you may find more useful.

That's the thing I may or may not find it more useful. But £550 for a vac with alloy poles and around £200-£300 for a genny? I wouldn't sell the pole as I would need it down the line.
Do most of you use a generator and what size? not many have replied to this question on other posts. Its not a trick question!

I use a 5.5kva to power my gutter vac. (3kw tripplemotor from Kev.

I use carbon poles and the whole set up paid for itself in around 8 weeks.

I don't use a generator on most jobs I do. If I need a generator say for block of flats etc then I just hire one in and add it to the cost.

£400-£500 for 3.6kva which powers a 3000w vacuum

Not constanly if won't as will put it under too much load with all 3 motors running.

£400-£500 for 3.6kva which powers a 3000w vacuum

Would my 240V Henry Hoover be suitable for this?
Title: Re: Video for my website spoiled
Post by: Smurf on November 26, 2014, 09:07:28 am
 ;D

Not really as it's a normal hover not a wet vac so would go bang as soon as you go to suck any water/sludge through it. It would also be a wee bit under powered to deal with sucking poope out of gutters.

Would my 240V Henry Hoover be suitable for this?

This is a good example why I would not just turn up and try jetting gutters out using a telescopic pressure washer lance.

What a fooking mess that lot would have made and those broken bits of mortar and other bit of broken tiles would have become missiles too. ::)roll

Hi Alan

Ive got to say all my custies are absolutely chuffed with the gutters I have done for them, I have not lost any business. I just did a full gutter clearance and facia soffit clean + windows in under 1hr 30min on a 3 bed semi with porch and ground floor extension that is guttering all around. Customer couldn't believe their eyes as next doors guttering looked cleaner than theirs before we started and now the neighbours facia looks a little older.

I love the gutter lance, but I also stated in my first thread that at the moment I cant afford a gutter vacuum system and so this will have to do me for know. However I will still use it to clean gutters as it is fantastically quick!

Hi Lee, it amuses me how some get there knickers in a twist. I pressure wash roofs which makes a lot of mess but when the ground is covered in tarpaulin its a case of brushing the muck up and bagging it, there are do's and don'ts with every job and I've not got an issue with cleaning gutters with a ladder and any roofers or windys around my area use ladders so for someone to say "do it properly" suggests to me that they are stuck on there own little planet. Gutter vac's aren't suitable for all jobs and neither is the ladder so I will try out the lance with a specific type of house which there is many on my run. I have the pole so if its practical I will combine it with the ladder.  :)

Risky business :) I'll be spending a few quid on new safety equipment for this so the gutter vac has got to have a good argument for me to buy into it.
Looking at Gutter cleaning systems 3000w vac with 40ft poles. He's informed me I'll need a 4.5kva generator so even with the cheaper poles it's a hell of an outlay. :-\
