Title: Cleaning red tiles - advice please?
Post by: supernova77 on November 22, 2014, 12:09:49 pm
Hi All,

How would you go about cleaning some delicate red fascia tiles that are similar to the picture below?

Thanks,
Andy  ;)

Soft wash - hypo and rinse

Do they have tile paint/dye on them? Most do. I would use an acid on them. Would need to cover the glass on the window though. Depends how "clean" they want them. Also depends what the staining is. Usually its black staining which is carbon. Hypo might shift it if its green/vegetation.

Yeh like Matt said, if there's carbon soiling which usually will be on terracotta tiles, can't tell from pic then use a mild HF mix.
If concrete it will just be black algae and use hypo. F*** this Algo Clear 'brand'.

As above. Just keep hypo away from lead work. It turns it orange, it is however reversible but it sounds like a ball ache (lucky never had to myself)

Just wondering!  Have you tried Algoclear?  If so why did it underperform?  Did you do a comparison if so what with? What were the results?

We would wash using variable, controlled pressure, very rare last resort hypo. Instant results compared to soft wash,  doesn't matter which fungicidal wash you use.

Plus explain with customer and add a disclaimer, if any tiles come off you are not liable.

No I haven't used and I don't plan to. The cost of it is enough reason to avoid.

I tried it on a Tennis Court, a huge patio, two paths and two sets of steps it cost me around £50 in total and did a great job.  Took the bulk of the moss / algae off with a scraper off the tennis court then sprayed everything and walked away .  I gave no guarantees and didn't charge either!  I just said this is a trial but if it works I wanted paying but if it didn't it was free

Not used Algoclear but i would expect that most of our customers want to see instant results the same day.

Kev , I will also get some just to trial on my neighbours roof to see how it performs over time . However i wont get paid they are family  >:(

Yes that is a downside with it as it's not Instant but all the same it works.  My clients were over the moon with the final results it produced though!  I also realize it is not the perfect answer for everyone as well

At £15 for 40/50 litres ....I really don't think cost can come into it.

I see a demand for it ie access issues , fragile roofs , clients requesting an alternative to pressure washing ,  ect ect .

Always like to get hands on before i offer a new service to my customers Ed

It's the timescales for algoclear, it's worked well when I've used it but most custys when given the option want instant results, even when the algoclear option is a lot cheaper !

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your advice...

The picture above isn't of the actual house in question, just an example of the kind of tiles... I'm taking a look at it tomorrow so will take some up close pictures to and post them.

i don't hate it with a passion, it's just a fungicidal wash, numerous on the market which produce sim results, just not a sheep.
It's good to see they have improved photos on your website, majority fail working at heights regs, hence I don't take it seriously.
I disagree with lee and see it as a cheap alternative for the add on merchants  ;D

Kev,

Do you stock algoclear? I remember reading somewhere you were going to start to stock it.
I want to try some on the roof of the house we just bought.

hi all,
i know not everyone likes algoclear but, it does work, we've been using it for a few years now and it has never let us down, it does take a while to work but when i go back to look at a job im always surpised how well its worked. its a handy option to have if a customer does'nt want their roof pressure washed. we've also used it on other surfaces

I like Algoclear too...fantastic product. Most of the people on here that slag it have never tried it. For cleaning these red tiles in this environment it's perfect :)
