Hi,just had a Inguinal Hernia repair open Surgery and have to wait 6 weeks before returning to work. Have any Carpet cleaners on here had similar op and what precautions have you taken to stop damage to surgical repair or to prevent further Hernia's when lifting /straining or have you just been ok and carried on.
Regards Rob

Robert have you considered an assistant for a while as all ops/injuries are different and one slip up could put you back in pain.......I had a lot of football injuries and if you come back too soon sometimes it bites yer arse mate.......Alan

Both my sons help me when I need it ,we have two vans they window clean with and can drop off to help as and when. I need to find a recovery time for my self more than anything as I Caravan a lot, do competitive cycling and want to know when I can work on my own again . Is 6 weeks to soon.
Thanks for the answer though, regards Rob.

Hi Robert
How are you finding Etsy
Think its time you concentrated on Marketing and either employed your sons on as when required basis or take someone else onto team
do not know about Hernia what does Doc say
-
Hi Ian, Etsy works really well for my wife's Jewellery business, most of the pieces go to the States and Australia it's a pain working out the exchange rates.
We don't really need anyone else as the Carpet cleaning is just a top up the lads can help on, we get a good income from the lads Window cleaning Business's that we have an interest in ,this gives us time away in our Caravan.
Need to get firm recovery time for Hernia repair so to carry on as near to normal, my own Doctor is very vague and won't commit.

Had a hernia op about 8 years back. You will get toldto take off 6 weeks, 8 weeks, 6 months etc, but to be honest you could return to light work after a couple of weeks, NOT carpet cleaning, if you had a desk job for example. I was out quoting but never did any work for 6 weeks, its not worth the risk, and you will know when you feel safe to return. I started doing one job a day just to be on the safe side. Never had any further problem since, but avoid lifting heavy loads, or straining for 6 months.
Its not the end of your working life, just feels like it, at the moment. The 6 week boredom will kill you though.

Had key hole a few years back! Back to work next day but took it easy! Also had the same with cartilage but took advantage I was paid to be off!

Robert,
It may help to know that I had a severe version of this about 9 years ago and have had no problem since.
Returning to work was a very daunting and nervous time, but I was as careful as I could be and touchwood havent experienced any problems.
Try to keep your core strength solid through exercise and weight loss around the waist helps too.
Good luck

Thanks Paul ,may your good health carry on,my own Doctor has recommended core muscle strengthening today in a phone consultation. Lost 3 stone with diet change and out on the Bike in the last three months to get blood pressure down, so hope to get going again after recovery from op.

Mine was over 10 years ago, think I had 3 weeks off.
Just take it easy when you go back.
I worked with a hernia for about 8 or 9 months so you can work round it.

I had an inguinal hernia op end of Jan 2011 and took 11 days off then went back with a guy i trained up to help me when i could be more hands on showing him the ropes in December.
He drove the van and did the lifting i mainly just supervised for the 1st week apart from pre spraying and using upholstery tool etc.
After him being with me for 2 weeks i could drive the van again and was back out on my own but was sensible and didnt do any very heavy lifting, then after 6 weeks i was back out on my bike and in the gym and 3 years on its fine :)
