Title: go pro or wdv5000.?
Post by: Total shine cleaning services on November 20, 2014, 08:37:52 am
I know a few of you use go pro, we have just picked up the wdv5000 off eBay, they're only £53 delivered and are excellent, have their own wifi, you simply pair your phone thru settings, start up the free app and you're away, excellent picture quality

You get what you pay for as they say.

I think I will stick to my gopro hero +3 silver with an lcd touch screen bacpac fitted. That combination is ideal if you just want to do a quick gutter survey on a property. Just stick it on a pole press record then go around all the gutters. Afterwards just play the footage back directly from the camera. Doing so you have a permanent record of what the gutters are like so can quote accordingly. I've also found it's a great sales tool too using a gopro on quotes.

I also use it for clearing gutters too when using the gopro app on my old iphone I have just for that purpose. The camera batteries using wifi don’t last very long so I have a few that I can quickly swap over if/when required. Also I have both a usb and normal plug fast charger.

Gopro  bits and bobs are also easily available should you need to carry spares.

Lidil are also selling a chepo action camera with wifi built in but again you get what you pay for.

I posted a few days ago about a similar camera, the sj 4000 also available from ebay, only real difference being it has a built in screen plus wifi app, approx £75. also works with all gopro mounts.
Yes its true you do get what you pay for.
But unless you want 60 - 120 fps and a vast array of features for amazing  films of action sports etc. you don't need to spend £150 + on a camera to stick on a pole and film a filthy gutter, £50 - £75 is going to do exactly the same job.

But is it built to last?

I know my gopro is a tough cookie as I've dropped it 20ft onto paving slabs when a chepo setpost clamp broke on my pole. Oops! No probs  ;D

I hooked up the Gopro up yesterday £149 from currys and worth every penny in my opinion.
Ran it from iphone, iPad and samsung tablet and the samsung works best in this test.

I can vouch for the cheap fleabay offerings.
I have had one over a year and taken it snowboarding and on mountain biking trips. dropped it , fallen on it, slid down a piste on it losing control on sheet ice, so it is fit for the purpose of filming a manky gutter.
But If you already own a gopro then theres no real need to buy one.

I am however buying myself a gopro in the next week, the cheap wannabe was a good introduction for little money but I want 60 fps for smoother slow motion editing and time lapse shots.

Gopro linked upto Iphone 5 runs out of wifi signal at 30ft.

What kind of height can you take yours too?

Hi Avo
is that a question to my post above ? or the wdv5000 ?
If it is then sorry I should have said, my camera ( sj1000 ) does not have wifi and I have no interest in using it for gutter cleaning, the later version ( sj4000 ) does and has an updated waterproof case shape that replicates that of a gopro and can use the same mounts.

Same features and processor as mine but as to the reach of the signal I would not be able to tell you.

Yes my gopro won't reach 3 floor gutters it has a low wifi signal keeps affecting the picture to the iPhone 5 that I wanted to use.

Samsung galaxy tablet works but wanna use my iPhone 😬

It's obviously the iphone 5 weak wifi not the gopro camera just wondering if people have the same experience with them
