Post by: mufcglen on November 09, 2014, 11:59:36 am
as above i need to fit a split charge relay as im getting sick of taking battery out of van to charge up every few days, i drive about enough to put something back into it but just wondered if anyone had any tried and tested relays they could recommend?

E bay has plenty the only thing you want is one that has only one wire fitted straight to you van battery.Which reads the charge of the van.  I will take a look for you asI bought the wrong one first.

THis is the one I have which Spruce put me on to if I remember rightly.   Its a" Smart com "and easy to fit, one wire to the battery terminal one to earth and two out to the pump battery. O yes and a fuse.

This is the one Grippatank fit

............ quite expensive. I also notice that the Brocott unit is more expensive that it used to be - looks like that aren't selling directly anymore but using a retailer.

Those £15 ones only lasted a couple of months on my van.
The battery is probably around 90ah. Alternator again maybe 120ah. Slave battery 85 to 120ah. So those so called 30A smart chargers may work for some if lucky.  I fitted a Durite one with welding wire and 75A fuses to my van and its worked fine for the last year.

What I don`t quite get is fitting an 100 amp switch when you alternator is only charging at say 35/45 amps its not the battery`s amp surely the alternator ability to charge that would would dictate this.

I use a durite, never had to charge my battery even when I forgot to turn the pump off and left it running overnight.

Looks quality, does the LED display work well?
