Title: can you clean chewing gum without heat ?
Post by: creighton foyle on October 21, 2014, 02:27:18 pm
Is it possible to clean chewing gum with cold water and possibly a chemical of some sort.

Creighton

Dependant on the machine that you are using.

If it has just been spat out, even a couple of weeks old it will come up with most machines. If it is like most high streets and retail parks it has been down a long time, accumulating to the point where we have the problem we have.

Did you know that chewing gum is only litter until it has been flattened!

Any decent heated machine and machine & hotbox combination will shift it.

If you have the opportunity to price it then I would factor in hiring, borrowing or stealing a hotbox. If it is a certainty then purchasing a hotbox would be the next step.

Good luck

If it's a certainty and worth your while you could use mine but the distance between us may be an issue there.

If you can reach with the hoses very little else.

You need to consider when you are doing it, who will be affected etc

You need a hose into the hot box, from existing set up and then hose out to lance, small suitcase genny for the boiler

excuse my ignorance rob so the hose that goes from my pw to the lance would go into the hotbox (probably a shorter one than i usually use)  and then another high pressure hose from the hotbox to my lance ?.

The hotbox runs on electricity from the genny and thats most of what i need ?.

do i need different hose and lance for heat ?.

and what sort of nozzle ?.

sorry for all the questions but i thought it would cost a fortune to set up for gum.

Sorry Creighton I've been out for a walk with the missus

Got all that right. Don't run a turbo nozzle with heat, it can knacker the ceramic bowl & the whatever it is called that spins inside. Same hoses

You only really need the dry steam set ups if you are working daytimes or in live environments, with footfall right next to where you are working and then if you know what you are doing you can hot wash under those circumstances as well

Just buy Robs gum machine. Then advertise gum removal.

Just to put a possible spanner into the works.

Chewing gum on Tarmac is an absolute nightmare and that depends on the type of Tarmac it is and how long it has been down.

Did the storefront at Staines Tesco but I wasn't there. It was done on cold and when I got there it was a mess with overworked areas and with no lifting off between the gum it was squiggled. Looked a right mess. A lot of the gum was not done.

To put it right I had to put the dry steam machine on it, pressure wash it on the flat nozzle, go over it with the FSC and then rinse off.

You can easily put too much heat on Tarmac and it will damage it as it is bringing the gum off . My view is that Tarmac should be done with dry steam, a lot less aggressive. There may be others who will disagree on this detail.

Slightly off topic,

Got a job where brand new Tarmac is being laid when the rest of the works are done we are pressure washing perimeter walls, loading bays and the newly laid car park, is there anything I need to be careful of with new Tarmac ? ( cold washing it )

Tarmac stripes.. specially if you use a FSC.. Don't use a turbo on it. If it is freshly laid then it should just require a rinse down.. fan nozzle. Most different types of tarmac is soft, so you just need to be carefull and find the best way for each job. It is going to look amazing when its wet, but if there is any residue or dirt left, it will show when dry.

Cheers Matt, usually use fans on Tarmac but never done freshly laid

Fresh tarmac...use a surfactant it will help  "carry" the crap away and help  prevent it "sticking " again. Fairy is as good as any.

Mine separate at the trigger and I use quick release for nozzle changes, it doesn't split in the centre section

I have the same.
I think Bob means one with a low pressure  nozzle  on as well ...the type you "twist" the handle to alternate between low and high pressure . They are usually there to introduce soap but can be used for increased flow at low pressure....it looks like two lances attached on top of each other.

This is tarmac on a school, a mix of different soft to hard. Notice how we don't have the nozzle too close, don't let the pressure do the most work, let the heat tickle it/melt each piece off.

Where as harder surfaces like York Stone you can work much faster as demonstrated here by my brother, Chris. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zs9ST21IiE&index=34&list=UU6uGqco6i7spfOi1cUHCV1w

rob been looking at hotboxes and even though they state up to 150c i'm sure at max flow the water won't be as hot as they say , so are the hotboxes you posted links for yesterday adequate. also whats the difference with a hotbox and a dry steam setup.

I have a honda gx 190 5.5 hp which i think is 3.2 kw does this sound about right .

A hot box will only produce about 85c .
Wet steam is  100c and dry steam is wet steam that has been heated again till there are no water droplets left.
To keep dry steam dry you will need specially insulated hose and fittings because as the steam cools along it's journey ,it will recondense and become wet steam, cool it again it will become hot water etc.
If you can see the steam it's wet steam or hot water.
Machines like the Falch (the video Lee posted) are capable of producing   steam ...you will never achieve this from a hotbox . Although two hotboxes in series is will get there. First hotbox will get to 80 c plus then the next one will get you up around boiling depending on heat loss.
Your machine connected to a 15lpm hot box (21lpm would give better results) will do the job . It might be slower but possible.

Watch out for anything metal ,fitting s,lance etc as the become a bit unpredictable at higher temperatures ! Things that didn't leak might start to due to expansion.

Huw is over your way, he has a heated machine, has a single operator dry steam machine. Might be worth having a word see if he will loan you the kit or something, if it comes off, save you buying and committing.

He does come on here but it is Seers www.seerclean.com

For a welsh person he is alright ;)

Sorry for late replies, been out trying to fix the vivaro

Chris - cheers, no they are singles, but the ones we hire for these jobs are as you described.

Lee - great vids, does the gum peel away or does it simply disintegrate ?

Some flick off but majority melt partially and flick away.

Ours are 2 in series. Not exactly sure but I think each burns at 68c each max but will produce 100c overall at 300 Bar. What the thermostat does is drop 10-20c every few minutes then rises back up to whatever it's set at. If we turn the unloader down to 50-100 Bar it'll produce around 130(So far I have achieved) but supposedly capable of 155c. 130 near enough whistles
