Title: re sanding a commercial paved area
Post by: Jettaway on September 23, 2014, 07:47:21 pm
I cleaned around 1,200m2 of paved road the other month and they have decided that they want it all re sanding. Normally on commercial I don't re sand, as we all know they don't need it and just eat through bags of sand.

Even though I tried to talk them out of it they have decided to go ahead with it.

Are there any secrets to do this or do I just need to factor in the cost of dry sand and enjoy opening all them bags :'(

out of interest, why do you say commercial block paving doesn't need resending?  surely the principle is the same with any block paving, that removing the sand weakens the structure of the blocks?

Usually the commercial blocks are 80mm thick rather than 50mm on domestic so you can afford to loose some sand. Dealers prefer not to have it sanded because it blows about and splashes the tyres when it rains - causing scratches etc

Get yourself a petrol blower. Be quick with the sand. Not too quick, but dont try and get it perfect. Then use the blower to get all the surface sand off into a pile and shovel it up.

I just bought a McCulloch blower petrol blower. £150 from screw fix.

I've always re-sanded no matter what the size of area, it forms part of the structure so is needed, it it wasn't then it wouldn't be there in the first place when it was laid. As Matt said get a petrol leaf blower, mine is Ryobi http://www.ryobi-direct.com/ryobi-rbv26-26cc-blower-vac-c2x13951119
Very similar to the one I have. You also get a clearer surface after using, no sand drifts etc.

I did read/hear from somewhere about sanding with building sand, then topping with KDS. Seems like a  right kafuffle esp with damp sand. Don't know where I picked that up from though.

I keep meaning to get s blower, will get one soon
