Title: Aren't some people just plain rude!
Post by: Window Lickers on September 08, 2014, 05:26:42 pm
It really riles me when you get someone who is just downright rude for no reason at all.

Just had an old biddy, I'd say by the sounds of her about 65 - 70, call for a quote for a bungalow window clean and her mate over the road would be interested too.

She was quite insistent that the frequency was 8 weekly, although we generally do a 6 weekly cycle, I said we could accomodate her on an 8 weekly if thats what she really wanted.

I said it'd be awkward to give her a firm price over the phone but Id give it a go if she could give me her address.

I couldnt actually locate her exact bungalow, you know how the numbers are blurred out by google, so I said it's not possible and then went on to try to explain that if I said it'd be £50 because its not possible to tell then she'd be out of pocket and ripped off, which isnt something Id want to do.

With that she started ranting down the phone 'Im not paying £50, what do you take me for?"

I said 'You misunderstand, Im not saying it'd be £50 but if I give you a price just over thephone theres too much room for error and its not fair on either party'

She came back with 'Well, even so, £50 is still too much"

'Look you old bat (I didnt say that but i wanted to) - I didnt say it'd be £50, you misunderstand me, Im trying to explain here'

With that she put the phone down on me'

When someone puts the phone down I see red.

So I phoned her back.

I said 'Its the window cleaner you were speaking to a feew minutes ago and Ive just phoned up to try to explain what I was saying'

'No, were not interested' and slammed the phone down again.

Rude old bint

Old biddy comes out to me the other day and says, "you have missed that window" (pointing at the downstairs living room window). I said, "i know!". She gave me the death stair, so i had to explain how i had done the window above the one she was pointing at, and had moved on the the velux next to it, then once i had done the velux i would do the front door. By this time the water from the upstairs window would have stopped dripping on to the living room window and so would clean it, last, as always (been doing them about 6 months now!).

I had one the other day. I was doing a first clean on a hair salon. I made the fatal mistake of starting to wipe the frames on a small lower window which I thought was part of the salon, but was actually next door's.

An old lady came out and started ranting at me that she didn't want me cleaning her windows. I apologized to her and tried to explain my mistake, but she went on and on, saying she didn't want me putting anything shiny on her window! I apologized again and said I'd just wipe the window for her. Cue another tirade before she went back indoors.

Another neighbour of hers was walking by at that point and, smiling, said to me that I could clean her windows by mistake any time!

The death stair? Is that the more severe version of the naughty step?  ;D

Send them a 'get well soon' card and a butt plug.

Then when ever you think of them, it'll make you smile knowing they will have been completely puzzled to get that through the post.

What's a 'get well soon' card?

Like a birthday card but for someone who is ill.

So if someone is ill and it's their birthday you send them a 'get well soon' card instead of a birthday card?

Get with it Griff and stop re arranging your fridge magnets and listen up.

No, if they're ill on their birthday you send them 'sorry to hear that you're dead' card. It really makes their day.

I had a run in with a customer's neighbour this morning.  The customer had warned me about him previously, but I wrongly assumed I could charm the geezer into submission.  I have to go around the rear of his house to get to the rear of my customer's house.

He was well over the top about me crossing over his property and the neighbour explained to me "Next door might have right of access, but it's not a public highway!"

I stayed calm, inquired if he had mental health issues (he said he wished he did) and I inquired into his marital status.  He answered by pointing towards his dog (I kid you not).  It made complete sense to me; if he's going to get upset about his neighbour's window cleaners, he's going to be easily upset about most things.

He even blocked my way - physically - and when he placed his hand on my shoulder I gave him three seconds to remove it and started counting.  He then moved his hand onto my pole and asked "Is that better?"

I informed him that if he was 20 years younger, I'd drag him around the back of his garden and kick the living daylights out of him, but since he was an old-man, I'm just going to walk away".

And I walked away.  As I exited his property he shouted, "You can clean the windows if you want!"  I'm guessing he realised he's just annoyed his neighbours too.

I didn't though.  He's got to have some kind of mental health thing going on.

one woman the other day called me and inquired about window cleaning.I said i'll later in the afternoon to have a look and quote her.She used the price calculator and she said is £9.5 .ok then then it's should be around £10-£12 every 6 -8 weeks or £20 as a one off.''What?I'm not paying £20.I'm not getting ripped off.''I tried to explain that it has to be worthwhile and it's take longer .She wasn't having it so i gave up and said ''Ok then .Thank you for your call and good bye'' and hang up but she was still going on
it's does affect you for a few hours

Had another one put the phone down on me today. Working with the public is more stressful than window cleaning sometimes.

This one has a house situated on a road that runs through the middle of a wood. They're overshadowed by pine trees on 3 sides. The winter just gone one blew over and took her garage out and part of the house roof.

For the first year I was cleaning this place she'd have us out after every visit to get an issue rectified. She has velux windows which is just asking for trouble considering the location of the house - under those bloomin trees. We offer a cleaning service which I like to think is worth having. But people can abuse your willingness and take the pi$$; which is the case with woman IMO.

Trouble is she's a perfectionist. She admitted on one occasion I went to sort out a failing she'd spotted that perhaps she expects too much. Her husband said the same on another occasion.

About 4 visits ago begrudgingly I agreed to do the downstairs trad to pacify her. Stupidly I didnt suggest a price rise was called for in that case despite it taking longer.

Anyway, this time she bells me up, problem with the velux windows - again! I let her have her say and reminded her of one of the conversations we'd had a good few months back where she had agreed that the trees werent likely to be beneficial so far as her windows were concerned. Alos that cleaning velux windows was quite often difficult in that you couldnt always see how well they'd come up and also because they were at an angle it was harder to get a decent amount of pressure on them compared to ground floor or first floor windows.

She was angling for me to come over and sort them out and said thats what needed to be done. Unfortunately it seems for her my lack of offering to go back wasn't what she wanted to hear. She eventually came up with "I'll tell you what, I'll pay for this time but call it a day after that" and down went the blower  :o  :o

She is the sort who is never happy. Ever. All businesses with her probably get the same treatment. She's saved me a whole load of hassle - thats for sure.

Good riddance.  ;D

A phrase I like to use with a customer with reference to awkward windows is 'best effort', as in "Those windows would be impossible to do from a ladder, and even with my system they will be difficult, but I'll give them a 'best effort' and whatever the result, it'll be better than them never being cleaned."

I try to manage their expectations and if they do come up nice, then I've exceeded them.
