Post by: Richard Stevenson on September 05, 2014, 12:50:51 pm
Article in paper, van driver caught speeding 57 in 60 zone . Although i new speed limits different for vans i didn't know speed cameras can tell the difference between van and cars. Anyone got any more info on this. Ps it was a front facing camera as photo of driver with hands in the air as he's flashed.

http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/gatso.htm

Quote
The Gatso can differentiate between different speed limits for different vehicles. For example cars, caravans and HGV's have different speed limits and the camera will measure the vehicles length and impose the correct speed limit for each vehicle.

Well I never knew that.

Just checked and my van is 50/60/70

So on a single carriage way I can only do 50 and dual
Carriage way to work is 60! Eek.

Found out last night my van has a limit of 100mph. (Private road)

I think the worst drivers are the 40mph crew. 40 everywhere including the 30's

I will take notice of these reduced speeds tho. Good to know!

I used to get pleasure out of overtaking them in the 60 zone then slowing down to 30 in a 30 zone and watch them drive up my backside until I left them again in the 60.  :(  ;D

It hard enough to keep clean license, but cameras that can spot it a lower speed limit van, that just not right, i think van that are based on a car i.e. An expert , that's the same speed limit as a car.

From the same .gov website:

‘Car-derived’ vans weigh no more than 2 tonnes when loaded and are based on car designs, such as a Ford Fiesta van or Vauxhall Astra van. Check your log book under ‘body type’ if you’re not sure.

Its number plate recognition software in the speed camera. It's the same software used in police cars that scans a line of oncoming traffic and identify which cars are not taxed, insured, mot'ed or either. It will also identify if the owner of that registration is banned or not.

This is how they can identify the difference between a 600 LX and 800 LX Berlingo (old shape) and which models the lower speed limit applies to.

For example:

The higher speed limit applies to a 600 LX 2.0Hdi Berlingo/Partner from 2000 to 2009.

The higher speed limit applies to a 800 LX 2.0Hdi Berlingo/Partner from 2000 to 2002. The facelift model from 2003 on the 800 LX 2.0 hdi is restricted to the lower speed limit. It also has a slightly lower payload of 788kgs.

The higher speed limit applies to a 800 LX 1.6 Hdi Berlingo/Partner from 2005 to 2009.
