I have had 2 jobs recently, both involving l/p nylon carpeting and both brown/reddish in colour.
In both cases, one was in a permanent marquee adjoining a venue which had windows along the side where the sun came in, and an area all along that side had turned black, the customer thought was dirt ,I explained pointing out the area it was only where the rays got too.
The second a rented house, bay window bedroom and bay window lounge both facing the sun and area,s that had turned black in identical places of the carpet, again I explained sun damage was the only explanation.
How ever, although I am convinced it was the sun in both cases, can any body explain why the sun turns it black as opposed to fade as in most cases?

I had exactly the same thing a few months ago,big black area right near the door on a LP carpet.I heavily pre sprayed and did a wand pass expecting the WOW factor and not a sausage of improvement.
Customer thought I was a crap CC I think when I told him I couldn't get it better.

Nylon would not be expected to degrade black, unlike PVC which can.
Therefore almost certainly the pigment is changed in colour and is irreversible.
Nothing we can do about it, a sign is a very distinct line where a mat has been.

I cleaned a full bungalows carpets last tuesday in the north east, most of the carpets were wool, exept the one at the back door, it was brown synthetic which had gone black in quite a few places which was exposed to sunlight, my explanation for it was the black part must of been the base colour and coloured brown, as we all know most carprts that have photo bleached are normaly lighter in colour and not darker !

I think Stuarts description of what has happened is spot on.
I come across this quite frequently at many of the properties with one of the letting agents I deal with.
It's always the same carpet, fondly known as "brown fleck" which is a low profile , man made fibre, predominantly brown with guess what, (a slight fleck in it). Usually only damaged near to patio doors, French windows and occasionally beneath velux roof lights. Fortunately, customers are always made aware of the situation prior to work being done.
Telling them beforehand is education. Telling them after cleaning they see as an excuse for a poor job.
