Title: Red diesel?
Post by: Kevin Miller on August 14, 2014, 03:58:52 pm
Who uses red diesel for their pressure washers? Where do you buy it from? Is it safe to use in your machines as I've read that the dye which is put in there can be harmful to machines.

Yes it is safe. It is all I have ever used and I have never had any problems.

Buying about 120.00 pounds worth per week at the moment!

Look for a small (possibly off the beaten track) garage, old school type. They generally still have it on the forecourt. I buy mine from one such place, in my local town - but then all of my local town is something that is still 19th century!!

Ask a farmer where they get theirs from - probably delivered straight to the farm???

You can get it delivered but you need somewhere to keep it, they pump it into an IBC etc and then you 'decant' it from there.

I say it every year - In the winter I will get some delivered, about 75 pence per litre for the 1000 litres. Hven't done it yet!!!

If you live near a Marina try there.

You cannot use red diesel in pleasure boats anymore and they treat it like using cherry in your car - only white diesel is available in marinas.

Derv, is white diesel   diesel engine road vehicles.

red is exactly the same but with a dye added, in other words you can use diesel in any machine you like providing it is not used on roads.

I have 2 garages near me, both selling red, and both main road petrol stations. I did however have to register with them and state why I was purchasing red. now I drive in , fill up and away I go. never been a problem.

Anyone can buy it - its just an offence to use it on the road and it states this on the invoice. You also have to sign a customs declaration. You can use it in plant.

Didn't know that , I worked at a marina when I was 16 so I'm a bit out of date.  Thanks.

If you have a big enough set up and can bolt down/fix your setup into a vehicle, you can try and get the outfit reregistered as plant and then you can run on cherry, on the roads as well!

Yep I go crown oil as well, but Taybur have just beat his price on Kero so I'm going to ask about red next time. May be worth you asking if you want a better price.

Crown are dearest mate. You still need some red in with your kero. Don't just burn kero it's not lubricated enough therefore your fuel pump can seize.

Geoff, I've heard that before about truck mounts, also once the van and solution lines go into the house the van stops being a vehicle and becomes plant so you can't get tickets

wish I had known that before Mike,
could have saved me £700 for a parking ticket I didn't know I had.

Maybe these bits of info may well be worth looking into further

Only use Kero in the Karcher (yes I own a Karcher) used for trailer washing on Tuesdays by someone who works for me.

I add some oil that the tech at Karcher recommended , only a few drops and I've not had it seize yet in ten years so it must work. Not ideal I know and probably does damage them. Don't think I'd do it in the diesel ones but works ok in the 240v Karcher.

Asked him about the Falch the other day as well and he can do repairs if you ever need his number.
