I was rung about a month ago by a rep from Unified Press and Publishing offering me an advert in their publications, I listened to what they had to say, agreed for them to send me art work of the ad but at no point had I said, go ahead I'm keen. So got a phone call today from their team asking for payment and was told by the sales person that when received the second phone call I have agreed to purchase the space. Feel like a chump, I'm usually really careful with this stuff but the day they called me I was really busy, out and about and was just saying "ok" without really listening.
How legit does it sound? Has anyone been approached by them here?

you havent agreed to anything tell them to get lost as you dont agree to anything over the phone
i got had a few years ago , rang up telling me they were offering space in police calendar or similar and took payment there and then on phone via card , never heard again !
never do anything like that on the phone if you dont know who they are!!

this scam has been going for years under different company names.
they tried it with me ........just ignore them and nothing will happen .

They might try again with the old 'a verbal contract is as good as a written contract' ...
If they try that, ask for a hard copy (C.D) recording of the conversation where you 'agreed' to advertise ...
Surprisingly they never seem to have a copy available

I get loads of calls from people like this claiming to be from alsorts of made up magazines I just hang up they normally say they're from the police or fire service just tell them where to go.

exactly the same happened to me. its a scam, i ignored it. they tried to wrangle the money out of me.they threatened court . i just told them to ram it never heard anything more , they wouldnt stand a chance in court because its a scam. whatever you do dont pay , IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE

Tell him to beat it. When he threatens you, laugh. Don't worry, you won't end up in court. The publication probably dosent even exist. They tried to get me with a similar scam, nearly fell for it too.

That's a really old scam, they cannot think of anything new. ::)roll

Cheers guys, it puts my mind at ease. I did ask to hear the voice recording of the first two calls, the guy said that he would ring me back within the hour, guess what no phone call! He also threatened me with legal action, I said, fine I'll also go down that route. Scum bags!

I have had this three times in twenty years - fire and police is the favourite.
Last time it was "the police mag" they phoned my landline and spoke to my daughter who naively gave them my mobile by saying "don't worry he's not in trouble."
They phoned me and said "don't worry your not in trouble but it's the police" and went on to tell me about their non-existent rag, gave me the spiel and I said "Yawn. I'm surprised your not doing the ambulance scam or the fire brigade scam. You from Liverpool or Manchester this time?"
Guy got really antsy and said he'd "got my address and would make an appointment to come and see me at 6.30 on Thursday evening (two days time)" I said "great you come 150 miles at 6.30 on Thursday and you'll meet a real copper now go and peddle your rubbish elsewhere!"
They are truly scum.

I had these ring me telling they were representing the police, and when I phoned the police to verify they told me they did not, and to report them to trading standards ! That was two years ago, and they are still going ::)roll
