Title: Feeling demotivated
Post by: Marc Stock on July 09, 2014, 08:55:00 pm
Recently been feeling a bit de-motivated with window cleaning recently.

Been at this since 2003 so im in my 11th year, im getting a bit cheesed off with

the late payers

the hard graft

the timewasters (which seem to be loads this year)

getting a wet leg

kinked hoses

general attitude of people

Im 34 now, im finding I haven't got the energy I had when I was 23. Doing 14 jobs a day is becoming very difficult now and its getting me down to be honest.

what shall I do?

Book a holiday and switch off your phone for a couple of weeks. August is a good time, your customers will be away aswell.

You'll be raring to go in September, and your custies will still be here.

most of us will know where you coming from, but you need to put it in perspective, you work for yourself ,you don't have to take poop from people, you can do what you want when you want,if you work hard you will earn good money, unless you are qualified in another field, you won't wont earn what you can cleaning windows, make a list of the messers you have, count them up,go canvassing replace with new customers,a lot of us work on our own don't loose sight of what you are doing which is earning a good wage, and you are in control of you own destiny, lots of people that are employed would love to work for themselves, and be in control of there life. Good luck .

34?, good grief man get a grip!.

I don't especially enjoy cleaning windows for a living, but it pays very well (if you put the effort in) and is a hell of a lot better than most jobs out there.

If you are feeling like this now, what are you going to be like when you get old? ;)

to be honest mate im not one to judge. if he has done his time, then that's that, he has the right to start again without being judged or chastised.  I hope it goes well for him.

Colin: you are 100% correct. I need to reset; and have a customer spring clean get rid of the dross.

Simon: yeah I know 34 is young to a lot on here, but I am still finding it harder than when in my 20's

Soupy: stop being a peeping tom.
  :P
had a lot of timewasters recently, think that's got me down a bit. The good weather has brought out the chancers and I reckon that's had an impact a bit.

Marc, you posted about your depression not too long ago right?
Have you changed anything?
Pills?
Diet?
Exercise?
Relationship?
These things may be making you anxious but manifesting themselves in your work.
It all about your attitude mate.
If something is knocking it out, change that something back and crack on with work.

what shall I do?

Do less jobs a day.

Put prices up.

Constantly look for ways to work more efficiently.

If you think you havn't the energy at 34, try being the wrong side of 50. You need to adjust how you work as you get older and use experience to work smarter.

It sounds like life has no meaning.  Have you ever thought of opening your heart to Jesub?

@Marc.  I seem to recall that you always give customers a "next clean" date.  This is why, with a very few exceptions, that I don't do this.  Maybe revise the way you do things a little.  If you must give "next clean" dates, perhaps work it so that you have a few days off periodically and have a plan what to do on those days?
Not trying to tell you your business but I know how the daily grind can wear a bit thin sometimes.

do this marc if you can afford it!

i dont know what shape your round/business is in at the moment but we all need a well earned break.

i cant understand being de motivated in the middle of summer.great weather, plenty of work.customers generally happier to see us etc.

21 years window cleaning and 42 years of age and i very rarely get de motivated these days.on the rare occasions i do i take a day or two off and im back at it as normal.

best wishes

Take a holiday and evaluate your life then decide what to do.
Cleaning windows isn't the be all and end all you might like to give something else a go or then again you might decide windows are the way to go

Marc, I have been feeling the same for a while now the only difference is that I'm a bit older.
I'm also feeling fed up with life so I don't know if its window cleaning that's causing me to feel
this way or the fact that life's getting me down is causing me to blame my job.
Going to try a few tips that Iv read on here like doing some exercise and being more organised
to see if they help.
Also intend to reduce my workload and once I get more reliable up my prices to make up the cash shortfall.
I left my last job to start up window cleaning and there are times when I get the feeling that
Iv pushed the self destruct button.
As my wife keeps reminding me, I look back on my last job with rose tinted glasses and tend to forget the many
reasons why I left.
Deep down I know she's right.

why not take someone on.  a boring day becomes a day of chatting.  and when you are paying someones wages you certainly won't slack.  and then of course the next step is to get them to do the work whilst you go off on a bike ride etc.
i personally find window cleaning very dull, but have a very realistic target of not having to do the work myself so i can be free to have some fun

Thanks for the replies guys, I have to say im feeling the bromance coming through.

Work is very busy, making good dosh, its just that im tired every day I come in. perhaps also bit fed up with the job itself, I did miss some doses of citrolapram about a month or so back; so it could be that. My OCD was quite severe 3 weeks ago, mostly the lawn and car/van cleaning which is usually a sign for me that I could be going on a downer.

I don't feel down though, just more like ...pahhh... you know??

Im seeing the docs Monday so I might ask him what he thinks. I might book a small holiday; we (my family) have a boat in chichister could stay on that for a few days, but ill end up washing it as its probably filthy not been on it for 6 months, and the headlining needs replacing it'l drive me bonkers every time I look up at the celing.

I am on the verge of getting someone to work with me. I had to do a pilot clean for a nursery. buddied up with my mate grant we had a right laugh. still waiting to see if they want to go ahead with a full clean though, if they do its 2 days a month for two people.

Seank

Our wives are flipin amazing. debs was just saying to me how many people do you know work, come home at 5pm dead on to see their kiddies before bed, don't spend 3 hours in traffic every day and earn more than the everage person? shes got a point there...

David moyes

Yeah..i see what your saying but the next clean date for me is something I need to do as my ocd kinda has an impact on that.

at the moment im doing Monday to Friday 4 weeks a month. I might see if I can drop off some work, put some prices up and take a day out every week. might make me feel better.

DG cleaning

yeah I have been thinking about entering the motor trade. ( I know stupid innit)
