i always think of transits as rusty vehicles. apart from tha ti think easy to work on n run pretty well from what i am told.
-
Shop around Bob, i picked up a 280, 05 plate, 39k on clock (when i brought it), no rust, damage or dents, steel bulkhead £3,500 ish (cant remember exactly)private sale
Took it to my mates garage and had the whole underfloor and sills sprayed with waxy oil to prevent rust
Been a great van, cant fault it (it'll breakdown now)
-
I would have no problem buying a transit, and that seems a reasonable price for the age/mileage. But i would avoid the 85ps version as they are very slow, and because of this, will have invariably been thrashed mercilessly.
-
I have one and would never buy another.
They may be good solid vans but they rust VERY badly and end up looking dreadful.
Not a good image for a professional company
-
Bang on vans mate, no rust issues since 06ish.

You'll be fine then Bob.

I just bought a 280 Transit 02 plate for £800, it has 75k on the clock and drives like a dream. Bargain and hopefully should keep me going for a few years!! :)

Apart from rust which is more noticeable on older age transits, they're great pal.
I've fixed and replaced everything on a transit and they're easy to fix, work on and drive great.
There's a reason why they're the most popular van on the rd and you can take your pick!

I'll try to get on one of your del boy training courses, maybe you could teach me how to spell while your trying to convince me to buy a ridiculously overpriced roof rack that holds...ladders
English any better?
Get over yourself mate

I had one ... drive like ...... well a transit van no refinement but its a van for work so no biggy ... garages love em as only ever in for service as opposed to vivaro's for injectors, gearboxes, turbo's etc.
Only downsides are wheel arches rust on front but easy to chop a new panel in if it gets really bad and the dreaded fuel pump that either leak or don't pump ... that's gonna cost between £500 to £1300 to fix.
I would have another one for sure.
If you like orange and can cope with big tailgate as opposed to twin rear doors then good deals to be had on ex RAC rear wheel drive that can carry a load of weight

Don't forget the Dmf that fail on some models but u can replace it for solid flywheel, I converted loads!
That's not just isolated to transits though.

I own a mk7 transit.
Here are the main things you need to know.
1. They still rust. They were either built in Turkey, or in Southampton. The ones in Turkey had more rust proofing and are better built. If you want to find out where it was built go on the transit forum with a chassis number and they will tell you. Mine was built in Southampton, and has some rust, noting major, but annoying non the less.
2. The injection system and engined are completely different to the mk6. The fuel injection system is far superior. I regularly go on the transit forum and haven't read of a fuel pump going on the mk7, and the injector very rarely.
3. They are nice to drive as the engine is a lot more refined than the mk6, and they are nice and quiet in the cab.
4. The major problem with these engines is they regularly knock out a piston. This is caused by over fuelling and the piston over heating. It is a combination of over pressurisation in the common rail and the ECU putting to much fuel in. What happens is, the PRV (pressure release valve blows on the common rail, and then the engine cannot regulate the fuel input. You can tell if it has blown because The engine will hunt badly on tick over once the engine is warm.
Don't let this put you off because you can prevent this happening. If you get a transit, you need to replace the Pressure release valve on the end of the common rail (roughly £60) and the suction control valve on the fuel pump (roughly £80) both easy todo. Then take it to Fords and have a PCM update along with a pump pilot learn, and injector pilot learn and the PRV Counters reset.
This will prevent any future problems with the pistons
I did all this on my van when I got it myself, it sounds a lot, but if you are handy with a spanner, it's only a few nuts and bolts.

Your totally right lee, I had a mk7 with the 140ps rwd engine pulled so nice but had the bad idle problem and I replaced both of those and got a mate at ford to do the update and it run absolutely sweet after that.
Agree with the mk7 are a nicer refined transit than the mk6 too, I had all the extras on mine inc cruise and the fuel computer, I bloody miss it now!!!

I got rid as the mk7 I had was a jumbo 17 seater, used to do private hire but couldn't stand the late nights or lack of having a life at the weekends while everyone's on the pop!
I've had loads of mk5,mk6 and just the one mk7 up to now but will be getting anouther in the future, nothing comes close to them.
The t5's and sprinters are decent but they just seem so expensive to me not just to but but for parts etc, transits are cheap as chips!
