What exactly is this section / function actually for ?

Ha, had george for 2 years and didn't even notice that one.  thanks I have customer who pays DD every months and will now stick him on it.  and perhaps the gocardless customers.

Hi

It's for customers who pay by Direct Debit or Standing Order - so you don't have to bother entering the payment every week/month or whatever.

go into a job, click amand details and keep clicking to job details 4, which is 4 clicks "next" button and it will appear on that page

That seems ok but if paying on standing order they still may not pay, by stopping it and you have it as automated so assume they have.

You still have to check don't you or have I missed something ?

no you still need to check, i have just put them all on a spreadsheet for monthly checking....bit late found one customer had not paid for over 12 months :o

Yes, obviously George has no way of knowing whether they've paid, but it's easy enough to check.
