Title: Rain puts you on a downer
Post by: Mr Sparkle on May 08, 2014, 08:00:36 am
As the title says,
Every time it rains it puts you on a downer, get sick of sitting in the van waiting for it to slow down , makes you think sometimes why do I bother,
Anyone else get like this?
Do work in the rain but hate it and think the customers don't appreciate it either .

Sometimes it's quite nice to sit and wait and relax. Browse on the phone, call a friend or if really desperate the wife. As long as it's just a heavy shower. If it's really persistent and heavy just call it a day.

That's why guys three years ago I stared adding other cleaning services.  We now offer carpet cleaning, end of tenancy cleaning, uPVC restoration, and gutter cleaning as part of our services.

All add bolt on's but works really well.

Couldn't agree more especially when its accompanied by gusty winds.
Plus there nothing as soul destroying as having a newly cleaned property blasted by
a heavy shower.
But like some on here I tried to clean in good weather only, but couldn't make it work.
I think to succeed in this business you need to get pride in your work beaten out of you.

just ignore it and carry on and in the style of Mr Dazmond ............ buy some gortex gear ...... I spent £100 on a lightweight  gortex Sprayway jacket ... great investment.

just clean until someone says no then fine no issues see you next month and move onto next job .. if they say can you call back tomorrow then sorry no in different area ..... Im only this way as I know rain does not make clean windows dirty ... just rain makes dirty windows spotty.

if you do the above you will either train em up or they will bin you so no problem just find some more customers who don't care if you clean in the rain or not .......... a lot of the time its in our own heads  :)

When going out to clean in wet weather I always give one of my windows a clean just as tester.
There are days when I return home and the window is fine then other days when its is slightly dirty.
I have even come home to find it worse than when I cleaned it.
It depends what the rain absorbs before hitting the glass that determines if it will dirty it or not
but at times it certainly will.

yup I worked yesterday, stopped when it rained hard for a few minutes,  I was actually talking to a custy at the time and jumped on her porch to get out the rain... Just said oh typical English weather it will only last a few minutes and it did...

today on the other hand is going to be a wash out, heavy rain all day...  so another day off

Chucking it down here as well ATM along with quite strong winds so it's a day off for me.

I hate days like this as the missus lines up odd jobs for me to get done and then this afternoon the dreaded trip to the supermarket.

If it's going to rain, I prefer it all to come in a continuous downpour which, like today, was predicted. At least you can do something else, rather than sit in van waiting for showers to stop. Another problem is the weather forecasts themselves. If the following day's forecast is for rain I quite often don't call custies the evening before cus i know what the response will be. Yesterday was a decent day here - W.Mids - but the forecast was for rain. Custies often don't believe you can clean them in rain, think you're saying it cus it's in your interest. Wish could find definitive statement from Met Office or somewhere.

Don't call customers full stop its a bad habit and unless its a job with a large amount of travel involved don't look
at a weather forecast.
Lets say you call 15 customers and you have a good day so could do more, do you stop because you haven't called them.
Calling customers does away with the flexibility needed when doing this job and there is no need for it.
If its locked gates get a set of folding steps or replace the customer.

It's easier said than done though.

Wet days don't always have to be a whole day off.
I knew it was going to be wet today so did a conservatory roof job in/out plus windows for a regular customer.
I've got a few other outstanding add on jobs to do so will probably organise getting those done if wet weather continues over next couple of days which it is forecast to do.  ::)roll
Sometimes it's worth having a back log of add on jobs to do.

It amazes me the amount of windies grumbling about the rain and having to have days off, just crack on and clean, your spraying water all over the bloody windows anyway ffs.

not a great day earnings wise  but did a lot of non compact stuff that would of sapped my time next week so next week will be a bonser week wages wise now all the fiddly jobs out of way.

no one said anything about cleaning in the rain  :)

I take the point that you can clean then when  its raining, I'm not the one who needs convincing. If my customers don't agree I can't just crack on. When you explain to them they don't normally argue but the first time you go in the rain they come out with it all over again....it's as though the original conversation never happened

I don't get any customers mentioning the rain anymore... They are now all very well trained  :)

I don't particularly like cleaning in the rain, but do anyway unless its hammering it down...

In the rain I always increase the water flow rate which gets me working faster... Today I even squeezed a couple of £25 houses in at the end so it was definitely worth going out!

Andy  ;)

30 flats cleaned this morning

3 run of the mill domestics

a £40 domestic

a £60 domestic(first clean)

this morning it was virtually constant rain, then it cleared up for 2 hours followed by a monsoon during the £60 job!! ;D

not one customer mentioned the weather!i was absolutely drenched by the time i got home!tired as well but happy!

a very good earning day! :)

you are mistaken if you think customers are bothered about the rain.     its a common mistake to make . 90 per cent are not bothered  but the other 10 per cent shout so you think a lot more are bothered than what is the reality .

drop that 10 per cent and keep on cleaning in all weathers is my policy

Seems like a lot of people on here just get on with it. It's been good reading so much positive stuff. Lots of good points, one stands out from robertphil ...that it's the 10% who shout give you the impression that it's a much bigger problem. Another one...I forget who wrote it, is about not phoning the night before cus you need flexibility. Still need to do some phoning though.  I guess  the answer is to get plenty of work then you're in a strong position to drop problem custies whether it be trough rain or lack of flexibility on their part.

another thing iv learned,if you are trad . -  dont wear waterproofs because A. they get sticky and u will be wet with sweat in no time   B.  they slow you down

better to just get wet and its not as bad a feeling as you might think. soon as i get home i have a hot shower and into fresh clothing .

steve it comes down to experience and wfp mate.

ive been window cleaning 21 years now and i used to worry about customers not wanting me to turn up in the rain or crying off at the first sign of rain.

the truth is most customers are not bothered(or out when you clean their windows!) ;D

if you have a good solid busy round then you HAVE to work in the rain sometimes or you get behind schedule and lose out on money.

if i have work to do i just carry on otherwise i lose out on £200-£250 a day.if i have say 3 days off im £600-£700 down on earnings.thats enough to put anyone on a downer!! ;D ;D

Some positive comments about working in the rain. Ido work in light rain but heavy rain I do tend to worry about what the custie may be thinking. I worked in the building trade as a bricklayer since leaving school, also self employed so if you didn't work no pay. So then light rain ok but heavy rain tended to call it a day. .Its just that heavy rain must effect the clean in some ways such as the upper sills will be dripping on to the lower windows all the time it is raining. Respect to dazmond  though hes got this window cleaning game sorted :)

As the title says,
Every time it rains it puts you on a downer, get sick of sitting in the van waiting for it to slow down , makes you think sometimes why do I bother,

Whether you work or not, you could try not letting the weather control your levels of happiness?
