Just been talking to a window cleaner who said that VAT will keep his business at the t/o it is now..... FOR EVER! Why? Because he does not want to decide to either absorb the cost or pass a 20% increase on. You can register for VAT at anytime in your business life but this becomes compulsory once your t/o meets the £79,000 threshold. So your at £78,999 PA.... what are you going to do?

The feed back on this is dont diver, if you going to register, register...some companies have doubled their turn over, over a year on from registering :)

Hee hee, Lee, you're a real card!
No, it's the correct VAT threshold.

I'm Vat reg and find it works for me, as I claim back the vat on fuel van lease and anything to do with the business. Works for me as we do mainly commercial. Don't think it's any good for residential as you would have to pass on the 20% to the Customer which they could get a windy cheaper that's not vat reg. if I was resi and nearly topping the vat I would go knocking and collect me money so it wouldn't go they the books and wouldn't go over the vat threshold 👍👍👍over & out O Ben Wan Kenobi 👍👍👍

£80,999, stay there. No problem at all.
I'd say if you're gonna creep over you may as well stride over.
Smash the canvassing and hit 6 figures, then it'll be worth it.
I've decided to stay under it.

you could go on the flat rate scheme! Which for our types of business means you charge vat reg companies the 20% then only pay hmrc 12% oh you get 1% discount for first year so 11% so on commercial work or b2b means you will gain 8/9% on your prices

I think most window cleaners have decided to stay under it I think as they make up the bigger portion of the industry :) How many would absorb the cost of VAT I wonder to double or triple that t/o?

I took a big commercial job off a big company. I matched their ex vat price. ;)
-
Winpro how does that work then? As if the big company is really a big company they'd surely be vat reg and claim back the VAT. They would have no advantage over changing windows to a non vat reg one?

Quite right. The custy cannot claim back VAT from your invoice. No advantage to them.
Maybe the gurlie you were dealing with didn't twig the ramifications?

Example- company does a crap job for £800 + vat. True cost to client £800. true income for company £800.
I do a good job for £800 no vat. True cost to client £800. true income for me £800
The vat's made no odds, same final figures for all concerned & there has been no advantage for the company being vat reg, I don't have the hassle of tax collecting for the Gov either. ;D

I thought you meant you'd charged the equivalent of price + Vat which would have been a canny move
-
Not sure who the vatman is but being a scouser I know who the taxman is :o

No, I found out their price inclusive of vat, then deducted the vat amount- which to be honest was approx what I would have charged anyway. So, don't assume you are always at a disadvantage with commercial work not being vat registered. ;)
I can easily cope earning below £81000, not being an unpaid tax collector & not being burdened with vat on domestic work!! :)
-
could the alternative to passing the vat on to domestic customers be to improve the days takings by 20% per van by continuous selective canvassing and upselling for a better hourly rate whilst obviously trying to make commercial gains -thoughts please

You "could" do what you like but there's no getting away from you having to charge vat if you're vat registered. Only you could decide whether this will benefit your business or not. It wouldn't benefit mine in any way, shape or form, I can tell you that! ;)
