Title: propane gas heater van insurance
Post by: Space monkey on April 27, 2014, 02:35:39 pm
Today I received my renewal quote for my van but stated in the conditions was the carrying of hazardous materials not permitted. I rang and asked if propane was allowed and told no. Does anyone carry bottled propane for their gas heater and still get van insurance.  I am thinking of getting a hot water system and wonder if I should go for ionics hotbox system as it runs on diesel and is not propane.  Is it worth getting a hot water system. Does it clean windows better? Thanks.

Yup, A-Plan do.
I told them, they didn't add to the premium.
They just said they needed to know.

Obviously I'm not bothered what you do Danny but in the event of a claim, you probably won't be covered.
Insurance people are all a holes, anything to get out of paying a claim & they will.

For me, I rang them & told them.
Didn't cost me a penny bud.
Call em and ask for a quote to carry gas.
If they say there's no loading (that's the terminology they'll use) just add it.
Guaranteed to be safe then bud.

A-Plan will, tell your current insurer if they won't and see i they can make an exception.

Don't forget you also need a gas on board sticker on the van.
You also need to have the gas bottle valve closed when in the vehicle unattended.
By unattended I mean parked up and not working from it.
Plus you need to check the amount of gas you can carry and are there any clauses on how it
should be stored.

No way in this world would I trust some broker's word over the phone!

GET IT IN WRITING!

Each and every exception, alteration etc should be SPECIFICALLY mentioned on the actual policy document itself.

It doesn't matter a single jot if a broker like A-Plan happens to have it on their own records, the actual insurer (eg Zurich etc) must have it, otherwise it's worth nothing.  I have noticed that brokers will often say just about anything to get rid of you, keep you quiet etc.

The insurer won't make any ammendments at all without issuing new policy documents, so if you don't have them then you aren't covered.  End of.

GET IT IN WRITING FROM THE INSURER! (NOT the broker)

+1. (A-Plan are pretty good at this)

Thanks so much for everyones replies to my query.  I contacted A plan as recommended and have got new insurance all sorted for carrying propane gas and 1000 litre tank. Cost me 60 more than my renewal but for piece of mind well worth it.
