Title: Crazy what i seen today!
Post by: H20cleaning on April 24, 2014, 06:05:17 pm
I was having a break for 30mins in between jobs when i seen the local ladder monkeys come into the same street. I timed them to see how long it took 4 of them to "clean" 7 houses and it was 11 minutes!!! How do they get away with it? The same 7 would of took me at least 1 hour 20mins :o
Also one of their customers brought them all a can of diet coke out, and gave them a biscuit, one of them was at the top of his ladder stopped and texted on his phone then as he came back down the ladder it slipped onto a porch( luckily) i even video'd it lol

The guy who owns the round has about 1600 houses apparently and they charge about £2.50-4.50 a house ??? Imagine collecting

Here... Look at the ladder on the top photo compared to bottom when it slipped

Lol.

There quite a few brigades out there like that. Glass only and really quick.

Thing is, if you divide the money up and how much goes out on wages on etc......us WFP guys on our own still usually make more, and it's a much easier work day.

Go figure. :)

Oh i know i worked out they were charging £3.00 per house thats £21 for them 7 houses i try hit £20-30 an hour.
They also finish about 1 aswell  ;D

I just dont understand how the man who owns the round (who doesnt work) lets them do such a crap job! You should see how many houses i take off them a year and they never say a word or even ask why!
1600 houses with an average price of £3.00, he employs 5 people pays them £30 a day. By the time he has collected all his money in he probs wont get that much! But i suppose he is about 25 stone lol

Fair play i say, before wfp when i was on the ladders i had 2/3 others with me and although it looks rough and unproffesional i didnt care as it was bringing the money in and as we were all friendly and had a laugh customers didnt have a problem there being 3/4 or us in a street working as our banter and friendlyness bounced from us to my customers so was a good crack.. I sometimes miss the good old days.

I'm not knocking the guy who owns it i just think instead of employing smack heads he could buy some tshirts with logos on, charge a little but more do a better job and have a more sustainable round instead of loosing people all the time!
I very very rarely loose customers its usually only if they move away.

He could do exactly that. But he was probably drug up to believe that cheap and cheerful is the best way. And that's the standard that some customers want. There's plenty of chancers out there, they come in the guise of customers as well as employers. Its the world we live in.

Some people shop at Sainsburys some people shop at Lidls.

I know a guy who does the same I'm not joking 5 of them completed a mid size 3 bed semi in a minute.
The difference is this guy charges £12 for the property and gets away with it.
Its hard to argue that wfp is quicker when you see guys like this.

Title: Re: Crazy what i seen today!
Post by: Jonny 87 on April 24, 2014, 07:36:58 pm
I always think that WFP is only quicker like for like.

So one man, ladders cleaning all frames and ledges too,

Versus

One man, WFP everything.
WFP is quicker in those instances. But I could probably do glass trad quicker than frames/ledges and doors with WFP. If that makes sense.

Still would never go back to the olden days though. :)

Trad is very very rarely quicker than WFP.

WFP is mostly quicker than trad, 95% of the time it is.

Two of us did a property today using the WFP method in an hour and a half. Trad to do it would take a single operative a day and a half.

Going back 10/20 years when all was trad, i dont think anyonecared about having a uniform etc! Well i inow i didnt in fact i dont realy now unless on commercial! a good apearence is all that is needed but as we are the bottom of the food chain in our customers eyes it realy doesnt matter what you look like as long as you do a good job.

You don't have to do a good job in this business to succeed just stay away from fussy customers
or messers as I like to call them.

Perhaps the window cleaning is just a front.

More things to sell than just window cleaning.

Haha and nah the owner has nothing to do with drugs, he just employs druggies for cheap labor.
One women told me how she caught them on her cctv round the back of her house sitting on the patio chairs cooking food on her bbq whilst smoking a joint!! I just laughed and said "he wasn't entertaining a female was he? He might of been trying
To say your house was his own"

You cannot tar all trad with the same brush (excuse pun)
We have been trad for 20 years, we do have wfp but charge a (large) premium for our services trad. All I want is happy customers and staff plus a few quid for me!!

Most of the window cleaners who use ladders, leathers, scrims and squeegees - are professional window cleaners - I know many who clean windows this way and clean the glass very quickly and leave it perfect.

I would also add that many of these types of window cleaners could master a waterfed pole in no time....
The waterfed pole guys however would take months to learn how to use traditional equipment effectively to earn enough money....

We use ALL methods and I teach all employees - as the waterfed pole like the squeegee is just another useful tool and has its place.

We have three vans - all with water fed poles/tanks etc - as well as ladders - squeegees - leathers, scrims etc - different jobs require different methods.

He wasted time texting. Then his ladder slipped.

But just to show the other side, two trad guys started a house opposite me in Greenham a couple of weeks ago. They were totally professional, cleaned awkward windows with a trad pole and nodded hello. Two of them took longer to do the front than I did on an identical house.

Return of the moody bunch!

Did i once slag off trad window cleaners? I was aiming it at these specific ones.
How do i know their druggies? Because i have grown up in the area and know exactly what they are. If you can trad a full house in just over a minute no matter how long you have been doing it then there is something wrong?

And Dazmond you give you input on peoples business on here saying how
To improve etc and i did the exact same stating that if it was me i would give them uniforms, price higher and chose my staff more wisely. Its a sad day when someone someone falls and paralyses themselves and these kind of monkeys are the ones that it will happen to!
Safety first.

its bad yes, but at the end of the day they are choosing to work like that and for the bloke who owns the round.

There is a lot of bad practice in the industry, I wasn't trivialising this at all. please don't take me wrong.

more bad practice their is, the better for you and me who have a much higher professional approach to things. we stand out like shiny new pennies amongnst the mire that is in window cleaning sir!

I wouldn't be cleaning windows if there was no wfp but its not because I cant use a
blade and app.
Both methods are easy enough to master but one requires a risk that I find unacceptable.

Let me work something out here...
Stick up for these guy who give all the good tradders a bad name?

Like climbing a ladder and standing there texting on his phone?
Or when he ran down the ladder and it slipped( luckily ) fell onto a porch or he could of been injured?
Or the story i told about them smoking drugs in a customers garden with his lady friend?
Or the 7 houses they did in 11 minutes?

Go back to the first post and read it properly were i PIN POINTED every point made to them lads not every tradder.

Im water fed pole and when i see someone doing bad practice and giving us all a bad name it really annoys me! It just so happened i was on my dinner break and had to video them as it was comical

To be honest going back years now but I had guys doing worse
than smoking a joint when working. wouldn't be the first time
I've texted up a ladder and that pic you showed is that not just 1 window
Each seems fair to me to do 7 windows in 11 mins as it looks like
terraced houses. We are all free to work how we want but would suggest
any one who isn't very good at trad gets practising.

I disagree with you there.

Look on this forum in the search bar "WFP problems" see how many topics there are? Thousands. Then there are far fewer "trad problems"

Why?

Because it's easier to get a good finish trad than it is WFP.

I regularly see guys who have been WFP for years still not rinsing properly or reading a window wrong as in which rinse pattern to use.

Within a day or 2 you can "master" a squeegee, but I would say even now after 10 years of WFP I'm still learning.

Let's face it, you soap a window, squeegee it off. But with WFP you've got numerous issues you have to be aware of;

Hodrophibic/hydrophilic glass
Window vents
Marks that require extra scrubbing
Drain holes in certain hopper type windows
Dodgy Rubber seals you have to be able to spot
Oxidised frames that require a glass only final rinse
Painted wooden frames where you have to leave the top frame bone dry

....to name but a few.

Please don't tell me trad is harder to master than wfp. Lol

I use both by the way, I have some runs where we still use ladders because of access, but I can see that it's much more difficult to get a perfect finish WFP than it is with a squeegee.

The skill in trad is speed. Anyone can blade side to side and wipe the corners and edges.

However blading a window quickly with no edging day in day out take the skill.

Who employs smack heads for cheap labour? No-one that's who.

WFP is less of a skill than the old squeegee. It just is. The difference is when you walk away from a squeegeed window you know if it's clean.

last week i happened to be eating in my local macdonalds as a wfp firm set to on the place . one lad doin the outside wfp and 1 lad doin the insides trad.    this was my first time seeing wfp really close up .
it was unreal how much water the outside lad used out there and he must have scrubbed each window a dozen times too.   i got to thinking that  hed be  better using a t bar scrubber as at least youd only need to scrub it one time ? why does wfp seem to involve mad scrubbing action?
it looked very inefficient in my eyes , just saying.   the lad doin the inside didnt do any of the upper windows .

was it worth it ,who knows ,i wouldnt want to wear waterproofs i do know that

I think that there are a lot of valid points being made here, on both sides. To be honest you have to give the OP a break. He's only letting you know what he saw and his thoughts - that's what a forum is for - to ask questions and open up debate.

Frankly 11 minutes to do 7 houses trad seems dodgy to me. I wonder what the finish is like. And I wonder what the results will be like in a day or two, whether widow marks, smudges and runs can be seen. A good trader will leave very few of these.

As Jonny said, wfp has its problems, but I don't agree that it gives a better finish. I've wfp and traded my own (I have a bungalow) and I wfp them every time now as the finish is better, for longer.

H20 was only pointing out H and S issues and making observations - we all do it. And he seems to be doing it from a position of knowledge about the individuals.

Personally I love bad window cleaners of any breed - their customers leave 'em and I pick them up.

There could also have been a small amount of grease on the glass I find that on some fast food outlets
even the outside glass can get slightly greasy which wfp doesn't cope with well.
I have a few properties close to a chippy that don't come up well using water alone for these I use a mop
on a pole, I scrub them as I would trad with detergent and then scrub rinse off with pure.

LOCAL LADDER MONKEYS

This is a poor comment  and one which most window cleaners who use ladders like myself will take offence to

If their customers are taking them out drinks they must be happy with the job they are doing

The customers you are picking up from them shouldn't  bother them in the slightest so what would you expect them to say to you

If a customer prefers wfp that's their choice

So you would tie yourself in with the term ladder monkey? Strange.

Theres a saying " your pay peanuts you get monkeys"

Ladder monkeys is the term i use for poor windows cleaners looking for quick beer tokens, whilst using ladders without the correct safety methods and doing a poor job.

We all use ladders wether its a 2 step or 12 step ladder so do i call myself a ladder monkey? Nope because i do a good job and my price reflects that, i am also fully trained and insured unlike them ladder monkeys i spoke of

Just to contribute to this topic. Sorry Soupy you are wrong! I know 'FACT' that certain companies in my area DO! As the OP also does, I take 'bucket' loads of there work from them.

Your original post opening

Lol give it a rest now will you lol..your just a baby..im surprised you have been going 4 years and havnt got a full work load??
Maybe these ladder monkeys do a better job in your area than you as they seem to be getting the regular custom..i bet they have decent phones too and not an apple lol.. ;D

Why would anyone employ smack heads? I thought drugs were expensive - how on earth does employing smack heads equate to cheap labour? Surely you'd be better off employing Romanians or women. They'd be better 'cheap labour'.

How do you know they are actual 'smack heads' and not just your run of the mill stoners or richys? Do they have track marks? Do you see them queuing at the chemist every morning? It was my understanding that smack heads aren't really interested in working, just smack.

With police in the family and a friend living next door to the parents of one of these 'professional' cleaners I have a great deal of knowledge on the goings on of certain shiners. How about 'going tooled' up to work, and im not talking about a squeegee!
It goes on certainly where I live and work.

I agree totally. Only an idiot would actualy employ smack heads and thats if like you said they actualy wanted to work which they simply dont and wont.
Some people in this window cleaning game realy think they are gods gift and above others, ooooo i run a few franchises so i must be right and i can shout by using CAPITALS like "FACT" why the hell would a company employ a heroin addic smack head thieving scumbag when there are so many normal people out there they could employ??.

Mick, wow whats up with you? Why you ask, I dont have a clue why, but they do FACT, and yes a few franchised vans on the go, with respectable, uniformed, polite, insured operators who are expanding my operation by been that way.
I love the fact that other companies may employ 'undesireables' it just leaves the door wide open for decent companies to pick up easy work.
Most people using this forum take there business seriously but we are the MINORITY! There are many more window cleaners out there that dont use this forum than do. People only interested in money and cheap labour.
SHOCKING!
P.S I love CAPITALS!

And as for them been smack heads have a read in the evening gazette this is one of the lads girlfriends who died from a drug overdose a few months ago, and there not much older than me so i know fine well what they are into.

As for employing smack heads they can still claim benefits whilst earning £30.00 a day window cleaning? are you that thick?

Dont go upsetting people H2o, i think your comments towards mick your last post are unfair. We do indeed live in a problem area for drugs. I work in a relatively  small town so everyone knows everyone so to speak, in large cities you wouldnt have a clue on who is doing what.
Cream always rises to the top!
Gods gift to Redcars dirty windows is KentKleen, we are above most coz our vans are BIG!

If you have a LIFE outside work and are as professional as you claim, why are you so interested in bringing these guys down?

Would you like to have a round their size?

No of course not !!!!

I used to have a lad with me who was an heroin addict. Nice lad, very placid but just a bit too fond of the brown and The Velvet Underground. Anyway, we were cleaning a house one day and the owner came out shouting his mouth off saying that his brand new iPhone had been nicked from the kitchen window ledge and it was my "smackhead" mate that had done it.
Well my mate lost it and was screaming that he might be a smackhead but he'd never lower himself to being an iPhone user.

And for the record and about the 3rd time its not THEIR round, the owner doesnt work it he drops them off and picks them up.
Now stop nit picking please if you dont like my post then we will just have to agree to disagree

No, not at all:

and they charge about £2.50-4.50 a house

I'd rather have a much smaller but better priced round.

Imagine collecting
exactly how me and my team used to work a few years ago.really enjoyed it always having a laugh and yes the ladder slipped a few times even with years of experience .stick to your logo t shirts shiny van stupid business name with pure or h2o  or water in it and don't forget your insurance .
