i have a patio to do next week old grey slabs with what looks like birds mess all over them, seems a lot to me so wondered is it likely to be anything else. if it is just birds mess will it clean off with just water . is there a standard chemical i could buy a sort of one size fits all.

The birds mess will come off with just water and a decent pressure washer but if the patio is covered in black lychin ( little black spots that won't come off ) you can try thin bleach which might remove most of it but make sure you rinse it all off afterwards. You may need to leave the bleach soaking for about 45 minutes before hitting it again with the pressure washer

Probably isn't birds muck.

No you don't need chemical.
That machine, with that flow & pressure should clean just about everything you put in front of it. Stick a turbo nozzle on it.
