Title: Cleaning/restoring an old slate fireplace

Does anybody on this forum do this kind of stuff?  I hope I've posted in the correct forum?  Anyway, it's covered in a kind of yellow enamel paint.  I would imagine it dates back to the 19th century.  Also, it has some chips in it.  How does one fill these in and restore/reapir?  Thank you.
