Title: Flow controller saying dead end
Post by: Gary Allan on March 27, 2014, 01:06:47 pm
Hi I recently bought a 12 litre per min vyair pump and a cleaning spot varistream flow controller. After wiring up the pump pulses every 5 seconds and on the display it says DE. I've even unattached hose leading to hose reel to open flow and it still says dead end. Could anybody help?

Up the dead end setting.

The 12 LPM pump may not work satisfactorily with the Varistream controller as the pump is capable of pumping much more water than a small microbore (maybe even minbore) hose and brush with 2mm (the most popular) jets can handle.

The Varistream was originally designed for the Shurflo 5.2 LPM pump which flat out isn't delivering half of water you pump will be doing. Your pump will be drawing more current (amps) that the 5 LPM Shurflo so this isn't in it's favour either.

To increase the setting:
Switch Varistream on. Press the + & - buttons at the same time for around 3 secs. A figure/number will come up. Press the + & - together again for another 3 secs and that number will flash. Press the + button the raise the dead end.
Switch the pump off to save/store your new setting.

The Varistream DE settings start at 1 to 9 then go from A to F (F I think.) Varistreams controllers are factory set at C

Hi Gary Just to clarify please can you confirm do you have a Williamson Varistream (white label) or a Cleaning Spot Variflo (Red label)

If it is the Wiliamson unit follow Spruces advice. However if it is the Variflo the Calibration process is a little different
I would in part agree with Spruce that a 12 LPM pump is a little on the big side for cleaning. You are going to end up using around 3 - 4 LPM of water most of the time. Using a controller will reduce how fast the pump can run and also reduce the current.

My mistake. It's a variflow.

Ok please see the following you tube link for calibration of the controller
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kKoskb7l7c&list=UL

DE or Dead End means the controller thinks there is no water flow and has stopped the pump. The pulsing you mention is the controller carrying out a  micro DE retest which it does every few seconds. This is a normal function of the control.

Run Auto Cal as per the video this will allow the control to calibrate itself to your pump. With a high flow pump Cal may need to be set around the 60 mark.
Please do cal with the pole hose and brush connected it may even be worth extending the pole a little
