what would you do if another window cleaner was stealing your houses etc?
he's undercutting on prices.
thats another 2 i lost this week. one was a carpet shop, and the other a working mens club.
-
batter him with a roll of carpet in the working mens club toilet.
-
Not really alot you can do.
Your customers should be loyal enough not to swap window cleaners.
If they do, then they arnt worth having on your books anyway.
Personally id hunt him down but I have anger issues.
-
A mong on here undercut me on a few.
He's welcome to them.
There's nothing you can do really.
And he can't 'steal' your customers, they're free to use whoever they want.
It's up to you to provide a service that is worth more if you want to keep them.

When reading your post of a week ago, it sounded as though you had a thriving business. You registered nearly 8 years ago. So my first thought was to ignore him and get yourself some more with your canvassing methods.
But I would also have thought you would be in the same boat as me - too many customers. We started 9 years ago with just me, and a round which took 2 weeks. We now have enough work for 2 of us and a part timer. We have only canvassed on 2 occassions - the rest have been word of mouth.
If his only way of getting work is to undercut you, then as has been stated many times before, who needs those type of customers - unless you are charging too much or not doing a good enough job, which only you can answer.
-
Stealing your houses? Do you own these houses and the people who live in them?
Thats life pal,
Move over to the next
-
I lost a café this week ,undercut by 50p.couldnt believe it,annoying I no.win some lose some.
-
Stealing houses. Its worse than pound land :o
-
Steal them back obviously ::)roll
-
Under under cutting, i like it
-
i will get my own back on him.
and i know the exact way how to do it.
-
Stealing houses now their is an idea if I could pick them all up and move them within a half mile of my house I would'nt have to travel as far . ;D
Joking aside if custys are jumping ship for the sake of quid they ain't worth having , but to maintain custys you have got to offer the best service and have a good rapport with custys and both ensure loyalty . Mike

Dont be a fool about it pal, you could end up in a world of crap,
Thats like manager of asda egging morrisons windows because one of there customers decided they wanted to save a bit of money. Its business, the more u dwell on it the more desperate it makes you look.
Do you no the guy who your customer have decided to use instead of you?
Dont do anythin silly because you dont no what your getting yourself into, this guy could be a professional ass kicking contractor and you your home your family...
Im just saying think before u act

What about this one another window cleaner just turned up cleaned one off my customers Windows n she thought it was me until I turned up yesterday n she noticed it was a different calling card. She paid him aswell. I told her the next time he turns up let him clean windows then tell him he doesn't do them for you n not pay him
-

That's not really fair on the customer.
The wc is clearly a bit of a chancer so might be not a nice person to boot too.
If he's cleaned, he should get paid if she's in and knows he's not who she wants, different if she's out.
Try not to drag customers in to windie wars. It makes the professional lads look like amateurs.

thats an indication of the mentality of the customer, not the guy offering it for 50 pence less

Pray do tell what is the definition of undercutting…
-
My uncle intentionally under cuts my houses and shops best of it
is when he was made redundant with a mortgage to pay I made
a job for him that's right, I didn't need him but he was my uncle ::)roll
Now hes doing very well for him self cleans a lot of areas we clean
does it bother me, yes ;D
Every time I see him I think of the 3/4 weeks he had off with a sore leg
( or was it building his run ) on full pay ::)roll when he wasn't even entitled
to holidays.
No one owns doors or areas but some situations can gut you.
-
Go around and offer a very low price on the customers lost and when they go with you again just drop them and if they call just say I will be coming around and never pitch. Kill two birds with one stone. ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I think bobplum hit the nail on the head, its the mentality of the customer, competition is the key of business, if you think u own streets ur off ur tits lad
-
I don't mean to sound pedantic chaps but it’s a dog eat dog world out there as no cleaner owns houses in a street. The homeowner/tenant decides whom they employ and not the other way round as some cleaners make out it is.
Best you don't go upsetting the local nutter that has bought himself a bucket and got hold of a ladder from somewhere that now calls himself a window cleaner ::)roll
STAY OFF MY PATCH ;D
-
The customer is an old lady he didnt touch any other house I do just that one bit unfair for him to pick on the elderly

I'll text you bud. Not my style to blab on here-are you still on 017?
-
Pray do tell what is the definition of undercutting…
For me the definition of undercutting is finding out the price the customer is already paying and intentionally charging a lower price to secure the job.
Pricing a job as you normally would without knowing what the customer is already paying is not undercutting.
Different again if the customer says I'm paying £x but I'm not happy.
It's not something that can easily be defined.
But if you're an undercutter-you'd know it.
And you'd probably try to justify it saying something like 'that's business'
*edit-not you as in Smurf-you as in 'one'

Along a busy road in the town centre where I do other shops a shop keeper asked me for a quote. 2 large windows and a door, insides once a month and the shop sign once a month plus wiping underneath the windows and generally keeping it looking nice. As I don't need the work I gave him a price a little on the high side. He said ok, and to start the following week.
About a month after I'd been doing the job the previous window cleaners turns up, puffed out chest and all indignant, and asks me why I was stealing his work. I explain and he asks me how much I was charging, so I say, and he then accuses me of under cutting him and goes into the shop to under cut me but the shop keeper wasn't interested.
The shop keeper came out to have a chat and it turns out that within reason the price wasn't the issue, this bloke wasn't always doing what he promised and he did a terrible job to boot. Also, the shop keeper said his attitude stank.
I'm not saying the op in his original posting does a bad job or has a bad attitude, but if a customer takes on a new window cleaner at a cheaper price, then maybe it's either a cheap skate customer in which case, good riddance, or there is something else not right.
Most customers are pretty loyal to their own window cleaner and I've found that keeping customers is often more about good relationships than anything else.

So what if the conversation goes something like this...
Hi I'm ***** the local window cleaner and sorry I haven't had the chance to speak to you yet as have been so busy. So when do you want me to do yours for £7?
I already have a window cleaners that only charges £4
So how often does he call?
Every 2 weeks
Sorry I don't do 2 weekly cleans only 4 weekly but can add you as a vip customer to our round for £7 per 4 weely clean including frames and sills if you like?
That sounds good as the cleaner we have is always missing corners and doesn't wipe the sills. So when can you do them?
Blaa Blla
Done deal...
Now would you class that as undercutting another cleaner or not?

Earning £3000 a week, £10 a window..... and he's under cutting you?
How much were you charging to start with?
-
thing is if he is very long established itll be hard to hurt him in the wallet . better to poach his workers if you can afford to do it
-
Thread is LOL a min.
£10 a window and you was undercut. What was you charging for a 3 bed semi ? £90 a clean.
SHAME ON YOU!

Undercut you on A few jobs!!! Who cares its the nayure of our game, why lose sleep over it, if your that envyous of the old man then maybe try following his lead instead of crying over spilt milk that was poured.

lol - window cleaning has such a wide range of prices. £90 for a semi is about right tbh.

As far as i know, i have not lost any customers due to another window cleaner undercutting me, but i have been subjected to what i would describe as mind games, or possibly intimidation tactics, and that was by someone on here.
At the house i was cleaning, because of the layout, although my van was parked in the driveway area, it was parallel to the street with just the width of the pavement and a small embankment between my van and the road (8' max). The window cleaner in question parked on the street right beside my van and started canvassing!. Now i have absolutely no problem with the canvassing part, it is a free country (even though i personally would not canvass on a street i knew another window cleaner worked on), but it really bothered me that the guy parked where he did. There was no reason to park there, other than to make a point, or play silly bugger. The house i was at was not at the end of the street, and nowhere near the middle, which would be the obvious place to park if canvassing (same distance to walk either way). It just goes to show that different window cleaners have different ideas on what is 'acceptable behavior'.
-
To be honest I would not waste my time going out of my way like that (tit for tat campain) to try gaining crap paid work from others as there are plenty of good paying jobs out there to be had.

Have you tried peeing around your houses to mark your territory?
-
in the time spent posting this i would have picked up more customers than you have lost, forgotten about the unloyal customers and focused on the new, nothing good is going to come from revenge or anything to do with any other company, focus on what you are doing and nothing else

As some of the guys have already pointed out, 90 free cleans lol. This nthread has got to be a Bateman wind up. ;)

Of course it's a wind up.
£1 bonus, paying £2 an hour, earning £3 000 a week, £10 for one window, 20 to 30 shops all next to each other in a village.......

Lol. I am far from a keyboard warrior. I'm more fororthright in person.
I have a small gripe with the person for undercutting me.
Is it a big enough issue to put out there in the public domain? No.

As window cleaners are not classed as being human I think you might be allowed
to shoot him.
Not 100% sure on this one so best check it out with your local police before doing it
as you might need a special licence. ;D
-
The way some on here see their customers, you might as well shoot them instead as it's them that cause these problems.

I just think if ur guna call him a mong ur obviously pi$$ed with the guy so why not have it out with him....unless your chicken poop
I won't have it out with him.
I don't care that he took the jobs, I stated 'he's welcome to them'
He is.
I'm in quite a good position workwise. Il in the process if culling now. And genuinely don't care. I just feel it's....unsporting.
But I am impressed with your keyboard warrioring.
Why not come back when you're not using a scaffold pole, have more than 17 customers and a pair of testicles to go with your BS attitude. Tw@

Your a TYPICAL example of a keyboard warrior, trolling forums till they day u die.
-
How can I compete?
-
thing is if he is very long established itll be hard to hurt him in the wallet . better to poach his workers if you can afford to do it
Why poach his workers?
Harder to replace quickly. With a big round you get behind very fast.

this is now war.
tit for tat
i do the same one him
2 things i do on him
i used work for him a few years back. so i know. before i went on myself
number 1 he's about 80 years old.
has about 2 or 3 people working for him and pays em about £2.00 an hour
keeps all the xmas tips, etc. he earns abot £3000 a week
said to me once. come work for me bank holiday monday and i pay you extra wages.
he gave me £1.00 bonus in my wages. he's a slimeball.
pays no tax and is supposed to be retired.
wants reporting, and i will do, thought he was good stealing houses.
now lets see how good he is. i show him how good i am.
number 2
i know he does about 20 - 30 shops in the village near me, all in a row.
and hes been doing them about 20 - 30 years, and charges about £10 for 1 window.
going post a flyer thru all off em, give them an offer they cant refuse.
1st three cleans free.
4th clean half price.
5th clean £1.00 off
tit for tat.
To me this comes under the heading of 'biting off your nose to spite your face' ;D
Resentment = drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.
Are you Tosh in disguise?

Willy waving time, and in more ways than one.
Bill, come on mate, it's just a forum and also just words on a screen. Lighten up and take what's written here equally lightly when it comes to provocation.

Like I said good business plan.
-
tell us how you get on when you approach his workers . this could be your time to cream up if you play it right . itll cost you to start with but chances are you cud pull the rug out from under the competitor , even better if one of them can get you the job list

I haven't read all the posts but I'd say there is an issue with the customers here if they've took him on, at the end of the day he can't steal customers, your customer made a conscious decision to ditch you and take someone on they don't know or don't know if they can trust, it either says a lot about you, or a lot about the customer, focusing on the "stealer" is not the issue.

Now that's a very sensible reply...well said ;)

If we all focus on outstanding customer service and quality of work that is priced well for both the customer and cleaner then everyone should remain happy don't you think chaps?
