Title: shureflo pump leaking
Post by: Cliff perkins on February 17, 2014, 07:41:06 pm
hi before i buy another pump i thought i better check if anybody else has had this issue

my pump when turned of at the digital controller still lets a small amount of water through it,this results in a constant drip after turned off.
i have taken the pump apart and cleaned it and cleaned the pressure switch and put it all back together.
afterwards the drip still continues ,is the pump knackered and i need a new 1 or is it something i can replace in it
regards

Are the screws tightened up?  The ones that hold the pump together.

yep all tight as i just cleaned it all inside and re tightened them.

just to highlight the issue

its not the pump leaking from around the pump or where the screws are etc the pumps bone dry around the unit itself.

the problem is when i turn it off it lets a small amount to come out the pump/pass through it.

i have outside hose reel attachments/outside ports under my van and when i put the reel back in van it leaks out the van ports or through the inside van port as i have 2 ports 1 in and 1 outside.

hope i made sense then lol

regards

hi don
when the pump is turned of it leaks through the van ports yes.

when the pump turns of (i stand corrected on this ) but isn't it supposed to stop any water passing through it when stopped.?

Nope, water can still syphon through.
If you disconnect the hose you should still be able to suck water through when the pumps off

Its the van ports that are letting the water through, either replace the ports or put a shut off valve so stop the leak

hi I have the same thing occurring, water leaks from my external ports when pump is switched off,it's probably been happening for about a year,to be honest I ignore it,at the end of the day when I've finished work,I turn the valve off to stop water getting to the pump. This stops it happening,I also had the same thing happening on another system with outside pots, but did not have  shut flo pump on that system

gonna have my system all out the van when the weather improves and give the whole lot a good service replace some pipes etc.

hi mate the cut off valve I have is after the tank but before the pump, once that's switched off the water can't get out of the tank, therefore it can't run through the pump, hope that makes sense

I thought I remembered you posting the same query a while back.

I presume then that the spare pump didn't solve your problem.

A shurflo pump has a small non return valve in the pump head activated with a fine hair spring. Its purpose is to prevent pressurised water from being pumped back to your tank. It is responsible for the pumps inlet and outlet path. (Water can only travel through the pump one way.)

You can suck water through the pump easily but can't blow it back as the non return valve plate stops this.

The spring may have a slightly higher tension in one pump than it does with another.

I still have the same pumps on the van since the first post - 1 drips occassionally and the other is almost a trickle, especially when the tank is full. They have done this since new. They haven't got worse with age.

The solution is to use a female Hozelok stop connector at the van port.
SIL has one of these and it has been drip free for the last 2 years he has had his wfp system.

I certainly wouldn't worry that you have a faulty pump - you haven't.

I would think its because your water level is higher than your pump
and gravity is pulling the water through, a shut off tap or repositioning the pump would fix it I would think.

It will still syphon - my sons pump is above the level of his tank and that also drips. Yes gravity and the water level in the tank will contribute to how fast the drip is. It may even stop when the tank is nearly empty; ours does. A flat tank hasn't the head of water so probably a user will never experience this problem, although they will experience other problems we don't; pump sucking air etc.

We have 2 male Hozelok connectors on our van ports. We stop them dripping by pushing on 2 Hozelok female hose connectors that have been filled with silicone adhesive. They are the same ones we have used for 6 years now.
