Title: what do you charge
Post by: Brendan (chem2clean) on February 10, 2014, 07:19:58 pm
Hi, when pricing commercial jobs, sometimes you just know they wont book if you price it by sq metres. So do you ever price say 2 men, all day with a truckmount. If so, what you charge , taxes and all ?

We have found ourselves in this position, and we'd go at £600 + VAT.

Always thought it best to price commercials on time rather than size as square metres can become silly.

Yes John, have to agree, seem to price that way mainly too, well for the large jobs.

I totally disagree with this. Pricing by the hour leaves too much on the table. Especially if you are productive.

Pricing by the hour leaves too much on the table.

The point is it's not by the hour, it's by the day. If you know you've got a full day's work for 2 blokes, with only one journey, then going at a day rate makes sense to us. And our competitors would think so too - you're just in a different market from domestics at that point.

But all daily cleaning contracts, flooring, carpet supply and anything to do with building services are priced by area.

Speak to them with language they understand.

You wouldn't go into a pub and ask for 119.53 seconds of Guinness would you?

If you've got your pricing right then it should work out three ways around, or very close to it. So if you measure up the yardage and multiply it by your per yard rate, it should give you a figure not far from your hourly rate and upwards to your daily rate.
Big jobs equal big money, or bigger money earned more quickly so why give that extra money away by settling for less than you should.

I have a chart that i got from a carpet cleaner that had a franchise that i bought out his marketing system and some gear, it has a three tear system that depends on if its highlight or full on moving stuff. you should always quote two numbers or even three as this gives a choice to the prospect, say they like you but not your price they have options.

I always need to measure to get an idea of how long it is going to take me. My price is always worked out at a sq mtr price because I know that I am geared for productivity. My metre-age price will allow me a good hourly rate on my labour. I simply cannot see any other way of doing it. Prices could be anything from 30p per mtr to £3 per mtr everything is taken into account.
