Title: Had my van weighed and shocked !!!
Post by: Clever Forum Name on February 07, 2014, 05:37:53 pm
Had my vauxhall combo weighed.

It's the 787KG payload.

So van.

Roof bars and ladders
Ply lined.
Back pack and light trolley
350 wydale tank. Brimmed with steel heavy duty cage.
Hose reel with 100m microbore
Leisure battery
4 extreme poles
Pump up sprayer for chemicals
Tool chest (Lightweight)
Small steps
2 heavy duty comes
Trad gear
ME AT 15 stone
Little spray bottles for chemicals
Two small boxes of spares
500 leaflets
HALF tank of fuel.

So pretty much a well kitted out van. Some other stuff I have got which is
Standars. Pump and controller.

Came in at 1900KG with me in it so I
Have 95kg spare.

Shocked I could have a 450 tank and fill it and not be overloaded.

450L one man is a good £200 - £300 day

Now you know why myself and one or two others bang on about payloads so much!.
Also why i will point out to whoever will listen (nobody!), that you don't actually need that heavy leisure battery if you are a solo operator, wire your pump controller to the van battery. I have been working like that for nearly 4 years.

Hopefully poleking might read this too, though he will probably assume that it is your 'opinion' that your van was that weight, he would have a 650l tank in there ;D

Don't drag me into it you keyboard warrior.
The 2nd point in my 'opinion' post was 'get it weighed' then you'll know rather than people's opinions of 'you'll be overweight' without actually knowing

I drove past a dvla vehicle weighing centre today in Huyton. Sorry I don't have the address, it was on an industrial estate. Maybe google will find it?

Liverpool (AREA 06)

Kirkby, Liverpool, L33 4YA
Tel: 0151 546 6854 - Fax: 0151 547 5142

This wasn't the place I passed, but a phonecall will ascertain whether they have a weigh bridge on site.

95kg spare is that good or BAAAAAAAAADDDDDDD , Personally i am far happier with about 450kg spare .

I would love to see what your stopping distance is more so it weather , Me personally would not like to be that close to my max payload . Mike

My personal opinion regarding payloads is to never have a tank over half the weight of the payload.  I used vans with 600 payloads and 350 tanks and within a year the suspension is ruined!  I used a van with 850 payload and 500 tank, suspension ruined!  Now rocking 350 in 900kg payload- van can handle it more, controls better, have extra space for necessary items and a few extra barrels if necessary!  Look after your vehicle!

I think that it is imperative that you do not get a fat employee.

The van is within the limits on manufactures spec. So stopping distance has nothing todo with it. It's like having four passengers in a car. That will effect the stopping distance. So should the car not car four passengers.

If you have had two vans with knackered suspension already then I would look at the vans you have purchased.

I am of the opinion that most vehicles will not stand up to carrying the weight of their max payload or almost their max payload 4-5 days a week longterm .

Now i think most of us are very aware of the weight we are carrying in or vans or trucks and drive with due care and attention .

The reason i mentioned stopping distance is it only takes one idiot in front of the cause a serious accident  which could result in serious injury to you and no one wants anybody to be in accident .

Jamesmilton04 can vouch for idiot drivers after having 2 vans wrote off because of someone else . Mike

I carry 500l or so in my dispatch with a 900kg payload. Van is 8 years old, owned from new, and so far no suspension (or other) problems. I had it on a weighbridge some years ago and it was very close to the limit.

I make a point of filling tank in morning so it is not sat on drive overnight with a full tank.

I get what you are saying. I leave for work with 350L throughout the day it gets less and less. It depends on what van you buy. The vans we have run have always been the higher payload versions.

Am I missing something your van has a 787kg payload

You weighed in at 1900kg

Dose that not make you 1113kg over weight?

You are in a very similar situation to me dd, my transit connect has a 900kg payload and i have a 500l tank. 2300kg on weighbridge, 2340kg gvw :o

I had never thought about the effects of the van sitting overnight or over the weekend with the tank full!. Unfortunately, unless i get a static system, i dont have any choice, i have to fill it the night before (through the r/o), takes too long to do it in the morning!.

just cause in under weight doesn't mean that the axle weight is ok. ;) ;)

unless the weight bridge as the as the facilities to do it be ware about it .

When I had my van weighed they gave me 3 figures. Total weight, front axle and rear axle. All were within the limit (just).

My tank is set back a bit from the bulkhead so it is more central. If it had been against the bulkhead I think my front axle would have been overloaded.

Those who have tanks against the bulkhead, especially upright tanks, could well be overloaded on the front axle.

Just because the van can take a 1 ton load does not mean you can shove 1 ton in the back and think its ok.
Axle weight is very important. You need to look at the vin plate and check the weight aloud for your van.
If you ever get pulled that how the police/ministry will check your vehicle.
Having spent a number of years as a commercial mechanic in a previous life and constantly being involved in vehicle axle weights, I would strongly suggest getting it weighed properly.

Will be interesting to see what the axel weights are then.

Getting all vans weighed anyway.
