Hi,
Might be starting a small sideline business along with someone else.
What sort of money would I be looking at for a very basic website including SEO?
My wife did her own website which took her ages to do and quite a while to get on the search engines so would rather have it done for us.
Cheers,
Clive

Ego has over taken marketing , you live and work in Beverley yet your called henry halliday cleaning which is good as a brand but difficult to rank .
Nobody cares who you are , only you .
to rank you need to be relevant, and link to relevant sites , with fresh content and social links .
design means a bit but rank means more
more you tube , google plus etc

Neil have a guess .....According to google analytic what is the biggest search term used by viewers who land on my website?
My domain name was chosen not because of ego but because that is the name of the company, in Beverley Henry halliday ( or say 'animal van' ) is a brand known by everyone, to answer my first question the biggest search term used by people landing on my home page is ....'Henry Halliday'
Are you saying domain name is the main thing taken into consideration by google algorithms to rank sites.
I can see......(any-town)carpet cleaning.co.uk ..... being hit by google as it is a blatant way to fool google into ranking the website.

Was your website designed by them Mick?
-
Yes it was one of their DIY sites, they put in all the layout, I logged into the admin side of the site and filled in all the text, it was a bit like typing a Word document into boxes then clicking 'update', nice thing about it was I can alter the text anytime I want. The same for putting pictures on the site you can load or change them quite easy.
If you want a non cleaning website I would use Mark, I don't recommend him because he is one of my best mates but because he does a good job on 'no thrills websites' at a fair price,

Agree totally about the brand name Mike.
Wynne Jones suggested having two sites (one with keyword in the domain and one with a brand name). That was ages ago and proved to be right (Wynne is always well ahead of the game).
Out of interest, did you get any joy about those crappy links pointing at your site?

Google ranks websites in many different ways and they will never actually give up how they rank sites, not just because people would cheat there way to too rank, but because its always changing.

It's Ok per se and may well help in uncompetitive niches (where you do not need many backlinks or social signals to rank. The problem nowadays comes with needing backlinks in competitive areas.
A "natural" looking backlink pattern would have a lot of raw links (URL - web address e.g. henryhalliday ) but only a few links with the exact keyword phrase in the anchor text (the blue, underlined bit) saying e.g. "carpet cleaning beverley".
If you have an exact match domain as the URL, then these incoming links give your profile a really unnatural look (high percentage of keyword heavy links) which can trigger a penalty. That link pattern is what Penguin is looking for.

I typed in carpet cleaners . leeds , coventry , birmingham .
on all searches the first organic listing had the home town in the url .
a lot below didn't.
You are a exception due to your strong brand , Maybe as stated have two as garry .
bet more search carpet cleaners beverly or hull than your name

You can get bogged down with analytics ect.
The bottom line is, all I'm concerned about is - " Is My Website On The First Page Of GOOGLE For My Chosen Keywords "
and " How Many Jobs do I Get From The Website! "
I use the amount of calls I get as my main barometer and tweek the website until I think I am milking the most out of the website for that particular area.

The idea of branding is that a customer looks for you so Mick is getting customers to buy into Henry Halliday not into price, if you rank highly for search terms you are in the competitive mix where you are the same as everyone else.

That's where having a better converting website / landing page comes in :)

A few years ago (2006) I did some copywriting training. My "mentor" showed me some split testing results for a website landing page that were astonishing.
Basically, the website rotated three different landing pages and tracked results. I cannot remember the exact figures but two pages converted at say 4.5 and 5%. The third converted at 21% ! That was five times the response from the same number of visitors
