got a grand to spend on a van and have been looking about but by chance i seen a local peugeot partner thats pretty old though being a p reg but its the reliable tractor engine 1.9d and the body is pretty clean for the age and its only £400!
being an ex peugeot mechanic i know them in and out and im not bothered about mechanicals its all about the bodywork etc
but im abit put off by the age but for £400 i could smoke it about for a year then bum it off when i can get a better van and the rest of the money i got left can go towards building my van mount system?
what you reckon guys, buy this if its as clean as it looks and its a cheap smoker lol or keep looking for something newer and then buy my wfp bits as and when?
-
If it's tidy body wise are you a defo fix any mechanical probs then go for it,
A nice shiny van is a 'nice to have' but not a 'must have' I use ldv vans because they are cheap to buy reliable and do the job well - no street cred no 100 mph trips up the motorway no nothing but as I usually save 1,500 to 2k to an equivivant tranny or similar who cares.
In the early stages of building every penny should be justified before spending otherwise you'll have a flash van, but no decent equipment to work with...

cheers fella good advice and way i see it is in a year or whenever i can upgrade the van i can just take out all the gear and put it in a new van!
-
Yes, it's all moveable, or looking at the prices people buy a "WFP" van on eBay you'll get 1500 quid for it this time next year😃

lol yes ive seen quite a few of these guys selling vans with a di setup and call it an expensive set up and want anouthe £100 lol when you can do something similar for a couple of hundred but theres blind buyers out there and theres always somone willing to buy!!
-
well want and took a look at the van today and pleasantly suprised, its pretty clean for a p reg apart from back doors got a few dents in, needs a service and my peugeot hands lol to make it perfect but im still undecided as i'd have to tax it then a few quid to service it and then panel it out inside the back so it all adds up!
heres a pic, what you think as a van to use for a year as im still building work?
-
in my mind-it's all about the mileage.
Van like that, 120k(isn) or less, £400, go for it!
Higher mileage, i wouldn't bother.
Still might be worth a punt for less though...
-
For £400 providing the mileage aint crazy then yeah why not.
-
its only done 138k miles which for a 1997 think thats good, its the old bullet proof peugeot 1.9 engine, probably the best engine peugeot ever made!
suppose it will get me going for a year and whatever system i build i can take out in a year and put it in a new one!
-
Whats your tds?
-
If you only really want a year out of it, and you know the engines solid its a no brainer.
Decent amount of MOT? Just make sure the rest is in decent ish shape to get it through an MOT if it hadnt got long.
Lasts you year, make your money out of it and put some money aside each month so you can spend a bit more next year...
I did the same sort of thing...
-
offer him £300 cash.
Go for it.
-
tried that lol, someones offered £450 friday but as i was there first he'll go £400 if i collect tomorrow!
my tds is 70ish ppm pal
-
yeah, still go for it.
If it gets you earning sharpish, even if only for a little while it'll be worth it.
-
the thing is im using the wifes a4 avant and its a pain in that as im finding im putting more and more gear on the boot from the gutter clearing gear to the trad stuff and now im going wfp i need the van for a system as i want to put a 300-350 litre tank in it.
i get a year out of it and could scrap it and get £100 back lol but to be honest by the time im finished with it it'll be mint, just priced up a full service kit and cambelt on ebay and im only looking about £30 lol, i got oil and antifreeze here!
-
well got the van this morning and spent the day giving it a clean as it kept raining on and off so decided to have the day off!
got the pressure washer on it and the got rid of the green around the windows etc and then doused it in tfr just to get some of the mark off but im gonna polish it up tomorrow, all insured and taxed and minted the inside ready to start building a van mounted system.

Looks tidy for £400 bud!
All the best with it.
-
cheers fella, if it last me a year that will do nicely!
its mainly just to get me up and going in wfp while i build a bit more business too!
-
That looks the business for 400 quid and a few hours clean up. ;D

Does it say its a 1.9 diesel on the log book.
The earlier Citroen Berlingo's were a 1.8 diesel engine. The 1.9 only came in around 1999. I would imagine the Partner was the same.
