Title: What have i done wrong?
Post by: Clever Forum Name on January 18, 2014, 02:51:10 pm
I have a 400L and a 500L tank joined together via the outlets.

I have the the ro feeds going into the 400L.

I would expect them to be fairly level as the water is produced, maybe the 400L being slighter ahead?

As it stands i have around 300L in the 400 tank and about 75L in the 500L tank.

What is going on, as surely that's breaks physics law? I though they would even out?

The pipe connecting the two is just hose pipe with connectors. One of the connectors is a bit smaller than the hoselock fitting, but not by much.

Should i link the tanks with the biggest hose possible? Which i could do?

You would be better of filling the 500 as more pressure when full will push the water in the 400 tank.

Ah yeah good point! Thankyou

Unscrew the lid of the 500 litre tank and see what happens.

Some lids have a one way air vent so they will allow air in but not water out.

Heard of this before, someone i know had the problem with water butts. Something to do with the outlet cant let the water out fast enough, so you need less water in the other tank to make equal pressure so the water wont transfer (something along those lines i think...)
He joined them together in the middle as well but if you cant do that, put a splitter on your r.o so it fills both at the same time? Have a shut off so it can stop the feed gling to the 400L when its full..?

Neither has lids, but thanks guys makes sense.

It's do with pressure, gonna look at one RO Filling one tank, and the other filling the other.

If they flood they go to drain anyway.

Will update once i have had a play. Thankgod for taps lol

No lids? So how does the air escape from the tanks particularly the second one as it fills up?

Exactly. What tanks are they?

I think he means no lid in the opening guys....

Are you filling from the top or bottom ?

Correct :) Top....And they are linked at the bottom.

its gonna be far simpler to put one ro pipe in one tank, and the other one in the other tank.

Ok does the second tank have a vent in the top to let the air out as it fills from the bottom?

I fill from the top and have a y connector so water is fed equally into each tank both remain level HTH

They are both wydale tanks a 400 and a 500.

So where the lid would screw in (6 inch and an 8 inch) its just a massive hole. So air can escape :)

In an ideal world we would have IBC's but just nowhere to put em Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Yeah i think the key here is to split the water :)

And you take both lids off even though you are only filling one?

Depending on your daily water usage you can have 2 ibc's stack one on top of the other, have an independent hose in and out to each,  I have 4 linked as 2 pairs upper and lower set.

Yeah, just unscrewed em both and left em off. The tanks are covered in black poly, so no light is getting through. A gap between the poly and tank exists as well :)

The footprint of one ibc tank must be smaller than the 2 tanks side by side ?

hi mate looks like you have a air lock on the 400. as air is trapped at the top thenthe only thing is to unscrew the lid and fill to the top so water pushes the air out the 2nd tank

Both tanks are along a wall mate. Its an issue that needs addressing as each day its a lottery on who fills up first :( or the night before. But this will help, with the water butts as well, we have close to 2000L. Be so much easier with 3x ibc's (we dont use that daily lol)

So no way to re arrange your storage space ?

If the bottom of both tanks are at the same level then as you say the water will level out between them.  As there is no build up of air pressure then the only thing that can stop (or in this case, slow) the water flowing from one to the other is the diameter of the pipe connecting them.  The flow rate through normal 1/2" hose with connectors will be very slow, considering that there is minimal 'head' in the first tank.  The only way to ensure the levels are always equal is to have a larger connecting pipe.  I used inch and a half to join mine together via the outlets and levelling was almost instantaneous.

The cross section of a 1/2" pipe is just under one fifth of a square inch, the cross section of a 1 1/2" pipe is just over one and three quarter square inches, so nearly nine times bigger!!

Was just about to update this lol.

We turned off the water production and waited/wanted to see if it would level and it did.

Looks like the connecting hose it way too small, but we have lots of 25mm internal hose so all good.

Thanks everybody and Ian :)
