???
Setting up a new system and deciding on whether to buy a 4040 with pre filters or the Pentair PRF-RO which is the replacement to the older merlin ro.
If you used a merlin how did you get on with it and what was your setup? did you use a storage tank for pure or plug straight into the mains and pole off?
Was thinking about using tap water in a big tank and just pumping it straight through the ro out the end of my pole with a booster pump...can you do that?

Firstly I would never have recognised the old Merlin as a quality product. IMHO it was c..p. We have a 4040 and its brilliant. 40psi tap pressure, HF5 membrane and produces 120 litres of water an hour at a rejection rate of 98 - 99%.
The Merlin my mate has (he had 1 before this one) has a rejection rate of 90%. The advantage is price. The old Merlin had a high pure to waste ratio so if you were on a water meter, it cost a small fortune to run.
Best is to have a setup at home and process into a 1000l IBC tank. Draw your daily requirements and go and clean.
If I understand this correctly, I don't see the point of carting your tap water in the tank of your van and processing it as you clean. If this is what you mean, the old Merlin processed 1 litre of pure water to 5 litres of waste. If the new one is the same, a full 500 litres of tap water will deliver 80 litres of pure - probably enough to clean 4 houses. The Merlin wouldn't process water fast enough to wash windows with either.
Athough a 4040 produces water much quicker, I would envisage similar problems to the Merlin although the pure to waste ratio is better.
I could also see an angry neighbourhood with your waste water running down the street.

what would anybody recommend as the best ro and setup for using a water meter? I currently have an older merlin and run it into an ibc, cant fault it. But heavy on the waste and as I will be moving onto a water metre, ( no choice) I will need to change

Our 4040 works well on a waste of 55% to pure of 45%. We do have a water tds of around 115. If you are in a hard water area, then you need to produce more waste to flush your r/o membranes.
The more waste you send down the drain the higher your water bills. This will always be a trade-off between water cost and replacement membrane costs. The less waste you have the less time the membrane will last.
I think most have gone for a 4040 as they perform very well.
