Had a diesel motor over 3yrs now and put £8.71 of petrol before realising my mistake , Head was in the wrong place after having 11 days of work .
Recently started putting BP Ultimate diesel in truck and ended up getting pumps mixed up felt a bloody fool thankfully i was not to far from my local garage .
Cost a £100 to get tanked drained and new high end fuel filter wont be doing that again only benefit is the truck seems to be more responsive on acceleration and the petrol has given it a bit of a clean . :P :P :P :P :P . Mike

You needn't have bothered. If you just filled right up with diesel afterwards, no damage would have been done. If you put diesel in a petrol, it is a different story.

8weekly that idea had crossed my mind , But L200's can be sensitive if i choose to top up with diesel and i ended up with problems later on it would have cost way more .
My local garage are diesel specialists who also deal with lorries and have their own haulage business and really know their stuff. Mike

Petrol in common rail diesel is a no no... Don't start ! drain tank,
If petrol gets into fuel lines you'll have trouble after a few thousand
Miles with ful pump and injectors.
Petrol in old diesels should be ok if you haven't put too much in, just top
It off with diesel and drive as normal.

60 plate Trojan , All done yesterday got truck back after 3 hrs luckily its a big garage and i always go their so they fit me in as i needed truck back for work . Mike

I don't profess to be an expert, but I put about £20 worth of unleaded in my 55 plate Boxer over a year ago. When it spluttered I immediately realised what I had done & phoned a VW engineer (friend) and he said fill it right up with diesel and it will be fine.. No idea if mine is a common rail, but I have had no problems since.

I did the same with a boxer - mechanic told me that it'd kill a newer engine, but on mine it'd actually give it all a bit of a clean! ::)roll

The problem is that diesel pumps are lubricated by the fuel itself as diesel is oily.
Petrol doesn't have the same lubricating properties so will fail very quickly when run on petrol.
On older vehicles the fuel pressure is lower and the tolerances in the pump are higher so they can survive a small amount of petrol in the diesel ,in fact i used to run my old vw t4 on veg oil mixed with 10% petrol to thin the oil with no problems.
newer common rail pumps use much higher pressure and have very fine tolerances so even small amounts of petrol can damage them .

Petrol in newer diesels is a real no no no no now!!!!
The tolerances are very small to go with the "cleaner running mumbo jumbo and carbon footprint"
My friend destroyed his L200 after filling with petrol, he topped up ran it for nearly 500 miles and the whole fuel system was replaced in the end.
Best £100 you will EVER spend!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o

yeah as an ex mechanic we used to just brim the tanks with diesel to water down the petrol but these days i wouldnt risk it with the fine tolerances the injectors and pumps run at, its just not worth it and best thing to do is drain it.
i'd happily risk it on an older diesel in fact my stepdad put £10 of petrol in his transit so we brimmed it with diesel and been fine ever since and that was a mk7 transit too so fairly new!
