Business owner but I'm self-employed on this forum. ;)

I think the generally accepted opinion is that if you do the work then you are are not a "business owner" as without you there would be no business to own - you are therefore self employed. Only when you come off the tools or only complete a small portion of the work can you be said to be a business owner.
Cheers, Tom

The reason behind this poll is to highlight a youtube video I watched last night. I have already read his books but I think actually hearing him has really hit home a good few points.
Take an hour off the tv or on here and it 'might' help a few people out.
Some really interesting points and suggestions.
Enjoy.

Expected not suprised and happy. If it was easy everyone would do it. lol :-*

P.S He is not selling anything or trying to get you to join anything. JUST good FREE advice!
-
I'm getting a flip chart for Christmas!
-
. We had all this rubbish in the 80's and early 90's. Read your book for 15 minutes a day, and subscribe to the "Must see" videos etc. All the best mate.
-
So lets stick our head in the sand and keep working till we drop. Enjoy. I am doing things a little bit different to that.
So keep on working to earn and maybe stick a bit away for when you retire.
All the best matey.
-
A bit aggressive and negative there. :o Listen, Rich Dad Poor Dad is a great book for Amway people and MLM people. You've found the holy grail, and you're going to own the world. Fill ya boots mate. I'm sure you'll hear the stories about the doubters, who are likened to crabs in a bucket pulling anyone trying to climb out of the bucket (like you are) and we're trying to steal your dream etc etc.
The good news is, you've seen the light, and all us poor suckers will just have to slog away on the glass, while you sit on a beach sipping donkey wee wine blah blah.
I'm really pleased for you, and give my regards to Bill Gates when you buy him out. Don't forget to take notes when you watch the guy at the white bord explaining how to become rich. You'll need a pencil sharpener and lots of note books on the way to the top of the pile. Record whatever you can when you visit the seminars where you'll learn all the secrets of becoming rich.
Us thick gits will just have to watch your super fast rise to wealth and read all about you in "Time" magazine.
This crap is what I warn my children about. Shame nobody took the time to warn everybody eh?
-
David what are you? A business owner or self-employed?
It's a bit like saying is your car a vehicle or a machine?
-
Cozy IS back!
COZY, I have over the last year and a half been putting the information from this book into practice.
Glad I have listened to this 'crap' as you put so eloquently.
Think BIG people!

Oligarch.

Just a matter of time then eh?

Currently self employed Matt. Working on the Business owner side of things.
Currently the residual income I receive from my window cleaning business is not enough to live on. I have only started working on this from April this year.
By 2016 I will have in place a business allowing me to stay in bed if I wish. (not that I will)

Often wondered what you looked like Cozy. ;D
-
I'm self-employed David, as I run the business that supports me and am responsible for dealing with my tax affairs. I make all the decisions that the company requires to be made to make it a viable entity.
If this is the case, and I'm self-employed, who owns the business if you can only answer one question in the OP?
When you've run a business for 20 years you'll realize this is all claptrap. It's just semantics and is irrelevant.
Get out there and manage your business affairs in the manner that you choose. That's all that's important.
-
Often wondered what you looked like Cozy. ;D
That's not Cozy. Cozy sticks them things up his dirt box before he puts them up his hooter.

You are correct Matt.
Can I ask though, and by all means dont answer it. But, If you stopped window cleaning tomorrow would your income FROM window cleaning stop or carry on?
-
Probably the most pointless post of 2013 so far.
;)

i have been wanting to say something similar for last hour but i could not have put it so eloquently! :)
fair play
-
So any business IDEAS posted on here should NOT be.
Lets discuss brushes, poles and batteries all night!
-
Well, it's a window cleaner's section of a forum. What do you suggest, an Amway "become rich in a week" seminar? Get a grip. The developed world went through all this crap two decades ago ;D
You're just a bit late, that's all.
-
You are correct Matt.
Can I ask though, and by all means dont answer it. But, If you stopped window cleaning tomorrow would your income FROM window cleaning stop or carry on?
That would depend.
It could. But that doesn't mean it would. You see, it's just semantics. Theorizing on web-sites does jack-$hite for a business. This thread reminds me of Ewan who used to come on here. He could talk a good wheelbarrow load of bollox about how to do something, most of which was also bollox, but it's the getting out there and doing that is the important bit. Thinking about being big won't make me big.
However, ironically, THINKING too much about being a small business is likely to ensure I remain a small business.
-
I do not expect to become rich in a week, and, in 2016 I will be far from 'rich' but will be off the tools and have a nice healthy income.
I am not 'preaching' here. I simply wanted to highlight some sound advice I enjoyed watching last night.
Cozy stop reading this post get back to your cats and dogs post. ;D
-
No idea why I should not post on this thread mate. I love watching Amway bods get upset when people don't bite the bait. It's a window cleaning section here, not get rich quick section. Stop telling everyone what you're going to do and show us instead. Come back in 2016 and show us the way.
"I'm gonna this, I'm gonna that" ::)roll
-
Matt, I have actually put in to practice this 'bo*****s'
It is going very well.
I am not re-inventing the wheel.
There is a well respected 'Window Cleaning Business Owner' (posts on here) whose business model I am following.
He seems to be enjoying the fruits of his labour without so much as an slx or ladder in sight.
I am just a few years behind him.
-
But he didn't get where he is by talking about it is what I'm saying.
-
We've had quite a few on here who have been sucked in by motivational speeches usually made by Americans. strangely I don't think many really took off.
One or two have had success with the franchising route but an awful lot are still working. Getting rich by networking was the most recent craze accompanied by automated sales funneling.
-
I think some of you may have the wrong end of the stick.
ITS MY WINDOW CLEANING BUSINESS THAT PRODUCES INCOME EVEN IF I DONT WORK.
I am not selling a get rich quick scheme, mlm or anything like.
In the last 8 months I have set up 2 franchisees, First has been up and running for those 8 months the second has been running for 3 months.
Both are happy, both do a great job for the customers and both pay ME a commission.
Another 2 Franchisees WILL be added next year.(already in talks with the next)
All in all a good 2013.
Not just talking the talk but walking the walk. ;D
-
So why didn't you say that in the first place? You bought Ian Lancasters package.

The original post was highlighting a video on you tube. After 17 seconds of watching it people thought I was mlm/kleeneze/amway/herbalife/telecomplus.
I am a self employed window cleaner building my business toward time freedom. Who wants to be cleaning till they retire? How can you retire if your income stops when you stop working?
I shared the video in a hope someone else could benefit from its advice.
-
Some people probably did. Stop hitting them over the head with it.
-
Kentclean, its all well and good that you have ambition as does everybody else on this forum, its easy to say that in 2016 you will be this and have that and be able to stay in bed if needbe etc however doing it is another story lol, you said in a post a few weeks ago that in 2014 you will have 2 more vans on the road which if you do then fair play but you are coming accross as a dreamer if im honest.
What seperates the men from the boys is actualy doing it instead of dreaming and thinking about it.
It is perfectly normal for a window cleaner to clean windows untill he retires!
Where is the problem with that?
Untill you have 1500/2000 decent customers and a rock solid bunch of reliable lads where everything simply runs like clockwork you too will be cleaning windows untill you retire just like the rest of us.
-
Mick, they will not be my lads, they will be there own boss, solid, reliable and doing a good job for the customer because they have invested and its there own business.
I plan to obtain 600 new customers in 2014. Our 'drop out rate' after the first clean is next to nothing so these will supply the next 2 vans.
I find with the right leafleting technique customers are easy to gain and keep.
I dropped 400 leaflets over a 2 week period (4x1 hour drops) at the end of november on 2 estates that we already work on. So far to date we have cleaned 25 with another 1 confirmed that they want us in 2014 via email tonight.
Will keep you up to date in 2014.
Dreaming?
My goal for 2013 was 2 vans.
Goal achieved
!
2014 another 2, IT WILL happen.
-

Genuinely.
In as few words as possible.
Why would someone buy your kit rather than set up on their own?
-
They are frightened to go it alone.
They like security!
-
By the way, they buy there own kit ;D
-
Fair enough.
So you supply (how many) customers?
And take what %?
How do you provide 'security'?
-
Customers= However many they want, AS LONG as they keep the quality and frequency of cleaning up.
Percentage= 20% of all work completed. Paid weekly.
Security= They never have to find there own customers. You supply the customers. If they had to find there own they would never start!
-
So what about if someone comes on board.
Stays for (say) 6 months, then decides to go it alone.
Can they leave?
Or
Say a fella has £2,200 of his own work but wants to get up to £3k.
Would you supply £1k's work to leave him £800? Like a top up?
-
Franchise agreement would cover the possibility of 'someone' starting and trying to 'pinch' your customers.
They can leave after 6 months but lose all there investment and the customers revert back to you. (or a new franchisee taking the outgoings place)
I would not top up. They work under your name and to your working methods cleaning YOUR customers. Someone with that amount of customers would not be interested in a franchise IMO.
-
Forgot to say. Your franchise agreement will cover them starting up on there own. The agreement is to protect you and your business as a franchiser.
-
Are they related to you?
-
One is yes. The other a friend.
-
The possible 3rd is a customer.
-
What you started from scratch in 2013 from nothing to 2 vans??? Respect to you sir.
i hope you do well with it all as you cant beat a good success story.
Not being funny though you can only do so well with leaflets! Grow a pair and start door knocking lol... :o
-
Fair enough.
Thanks for that.
Still can't see why someone would want to do it but each to their own.
-
Started from scratch in 2010. Built up name and customers for 2 years. This year started the 2 vans. I have taken a dip in earnings as customers are supplied to new vans. Total 3 vans working in 2013 supporting 3 families.
It helps to live in Redcar, have a look on google earth at the industry surrounding us.
We have a good number of 'once every 2 weeks' wfp customers. DIRTY!

Was given a book from Peter Foggy read it and have never looked back
It is the kind of book you either get or you don't
Its called The E-Myth
Not saying you should or shouldn't read it and no I don't have anything to do with selling it
Gordon
ps god forbid you become ill or have an accident, where is your income then?
-
Enjoyed the video money management is absolutely a skill like he says its not what you earn its what you keep ,
