Title: Winter clothing - what do you wear
Post by: Carl2009 on December 19, 2013, 01:39:48 pm
I'm one of those people who only has to think about doing any physical work and I get sweaty; I've found an outer Goretex-type shell doesn't work for me - they aren't breathable enough. Year round I'm in a varying number of fleece layers that allow a high degree of breathability but at a cost of waterproofness, if that's a word. If you have enough layers you rarely get too wet (with rain at least).

Layers is the key for me. At the moment I have a capped-sleeve t.shirt as a base layer, then a golfing polo shirt. On top of this I have 2 polartec-type fleeces of the type that have a half zip from the chest to the neck. I top it off with a windstopper body-warmer - again, a fleece material, but backed by windstopper material. If it's really cold (it's usually the wind) I have a proper fleece jacket. I also have a sort of thick beanie hat. None of the above have any cotton in them.

Gloves-wise you can't beat Skytec Argon's. I by them by the dozen (at under £3 a pop) and they last all winter. I launder them with my other kit. http://www.ppeworksolutions.com/skytec-argon-hpt-foam-cold-grip-gloves-safety-work-thermal-214-p.asp

On my feet I have Grubs Midline boots - again, excellent: http://www.broadfeed.co.uk/grubs-frostline-violet.php/language/en/currency/GBP?gclid=CMaft5S0vLsCFWITwwodM0MAcA

The above keeps me warm, as long as I don't stop. Though it doesn't sound it, it's not too bulky.

What do you lads wear?

Combats, T-shirt, hoody top, if its getting a bit cold I'll put on some thin nitrile medical type gloves to stop my hands getting wet.
Other than that its shorts and t shirt from March to November.
Keep moving and you don't get cold ;D

It's not so much the temperature - it's mild at the moment. It's the wind we have here - there's usually a wind and the wind chill on a wet/sweaty body is a killer.

I much prefer it cold and dry.

?? It's not that cold?? I wear a polo shirt and a sweatshirt plus a scarf to keep the neck warm. I don't think it's cold enough to wear a coat. Five degrees here today, not much wind until later when it started raining.

I wear this: http://www.gillmarine.com/gb/products/os2-jacket-2350/2450
with this: http://www.gillmarine.com/gb/products/os2-trousers-2352/2456
I wear a merino wool base layer underneath, some merino wool socks and some north face boots. It's only two layers so you are still really flexible and don't feel like the Michelin man.

I use these gloves too: http://www.sealskinz.com/UK/kj771-extreme-cold-weather-gloves-black.html?skip_welcome_popup Yes, you can grip the poles easily with them on.

NEVER wet, NEVER cold.  ;D

Military surplus gore-tex lined boots (£30 and thats them on 2nd winter), military surplus navy work trousers (about £10 each), military surplus RAF jumper (about £6 each), bog standard t-shirt (about £15 for 4 off ebay), and a lidls jacket (about £20) with removable sleeves and furry lining (which i have had since shortly after i started, but is starting to look a bit tired!). Most of the time i have the sleeves off, unless it is really cold. Oh. and some kind of, invariably ineffective, winter work gloves.

We are still wearing shorts. Mainly we wear polo logo short sleeved top and either gilet or full jacket. When it get really cold (not yet) we wear trousers Rab jacket and a jumper. Prefer not to get too warm

I have the legs of a malnourished sparrow so never wear shorts.
Workwear is:
Berghaus boots (recommendation from Dazmond)
Trousers
Polo

When the cold hits.
Add a hoody.

Sub zero
Add a soft shell.

Gloves, salopettes, hat that covers your ears, heated gilet etc etc.
nope. Just a large dose of 'man up-you work outside!'

serious.it would still be wise to wear thin
gloves that protect against infection. With domestic pets urinating
in relatively small areas plus other animals such as rats foxes etc
passing through and doing the same, you never know what your hosing
is being dragged through

All my clothes are Englebert Strauss. Boots with no laces but a twisty dial garranteed waterproof which they are. Best boots I've had. E / S polo shirt, dryplex top water proof and E/ S trousers. Really good quality. Even the thermal hat is E/S great company and would highly recommend.

I think their pay is linked to their clothing. I've seen them in driving rain and 50 mph winds and STILL in shorts.  ???
