I priced a job up and the customer never answered the phone so i texted details over explaining it will be £18.00 first clean (as it was rammy)
I went back for payment all curtains shut and no answer 3
Times?
I have tried calling the number she/he text me on but no answer?
I know your all going to say"just right it off" but with me i see it as a priority to make a point of trying to get the money back.
I posted a letter explaining i had been a few times and to make contact but no answer
-
Probably not that pleased with you using wfp maybe as left her windows wet then dried out spotty ;D
-
I meant to say that the person texted me back saying she had just moved in and desperate to have them cleaned once a month,

Ye but she could ring a and complain and i would have a look but there was 8years of dirt on them!!!
-
Did the customer actually agree to have them cleaned at £18?
-
Some ppl don't like to complain or maybe there is another reason why like she has moved or been taken ill or even died.... who knows?
-

That's what I am thinking. Bit risky going ahead without customer agreeing to price etc. How would you feel if you enquired about the price of a service, thought it was too pricy, then you got a bill or lots of calls demanding payment having not sanctioned the work?
Chalk it up and move on imho.

Try calling from a different number. Use a friends phone or something, they wont be ignoring all calls.
-
I wouldn't mess about you've foned text left a note, sod just egg the windows but use a seringe to put oil in the egg. They want a job done then pay up I'm sure if they wasn't happy they would of text back or answered call. 👳👳👳
-
I commented saying she text agreeing to pay £18.00
As they were so dirty!
And the phone is actually going straight to voicemail.
-
Not worth losing sleep over mate.
Although its £18 i bet it only took you 15 mins or less to clean!!
Go out 2 moz and forget about it.
Will be a trouble customer otherwise!.

id definately put dirt or eggs all over the windows to make them as dirty as they where before. hate it when people want something for nothing, i had one where a woman rang up wanted her windows cleaned, turned up and cleaned them, no one home so i called back in the evening and a bloke answered saying i cleaned the wrong house ??? went back to van and phoned the number that rang me and he answered the phone, obviosly forgot i had the tel no. c@ntt

Send them a letter threatening them with a £10 late payment fee. :-X ;D

stick some maggots in a pot on the end of your pole and lob down the chimney

Funny.

Ha, that's a new one on me, devious and inventive, I like it!.
-
tbh i've NEVER had to seek revenge and never would but the maggots and a mackerel on the car radiator grill have crossed my mind
-
Bucket with a drop of water in, mix a bit of mud with it, old brush on your Pole and paint the dirt back on

It never ceases to amaze me how professional some of us claim to be, yet can resort to the most unprofessional conduct when a customer fails to pay. ::)roll
I had a customer who I dropped recently. She was always desperate for clean windows, yet when it came to paying she always had different excuses for avoiding paying. After a while, enough was enough, so I simply walked away and cut my losses.
She recently phoned a friend of mine who is also a windy, wanting her windows cleaned. He mentioned to me he had had a call from this lady, so I told him about my experience with her. When she phoned him again later he told her in no uncertain terms that her reputation among window cleaners was bad, and that she would be well advised to pay me what I am owed.
Of course she still hasn't paid, and I know she won't, but the point of this is that her chances of getting her windows cleaned by anyone now is virtually nil, while I am still picking up better quality customers and building a good reputation. :)

you seem to get a lot of these dont you? it was a driving insnutructor the other week ;D

go and knock on the door, if no reply push a sliver of bamboo deep into the doorlock , nothing can be proved but itll cost them a new lock
-
lighten up johnny, how many have actually carried out a revenge attack. Probably one of the daftest things to do when running your own business.
-
i havent done many revenges, over 5 yrs about 4 of the bamboo slivers and about 5 of soaping up the whole house , which i always do while the person is there in person (heres a special clean for you ).
if you do nothing in the long run you could get very bitter
-
theres one woman in my town who for the last year has had her windows cleaned for nothing . i did 2 cleans a friend of mine did 3 cleans and I've heard she's been doing this for a long time. when it comes to payment she's never in . even when the lights and tele's on... and the windies drop her and she gets another ... same story every time. i drive by sometimes when someones cleaning and i always stop and warn them
-

I've done this in my more immature days.
Just fairy liquid.
-
every 1 has different views on how to run there business
if they want to soap up or maggots or do locks thats their choice.
myself on the other hand nearly have a few times but just write it off.
you can also be to soft and friends of that particular family can also take the pi.. so who can say who is right or wrong.

Well said! Revenge certainly would be folly, but then we aren't the most cultured group of people are we? ;D
I would certainly warn other window cleaners of the misdemeanours of these 'customers'. I have a few friends in my locality who are also window cleaners, so we look out for each other.
I am a bit passive aggressive at times, meaning my natural inclination may be to want to exact retribution, but then good sense kicks in and keeps me from doing anything that would only harm my reputation!
I'm calm now!

Call back Sunday morning?
Just one word of caution - the OP has been back 3 times and the curtains were shut. Unless he goes back when it is dark I just wonder if the place is empty at the mo'.
As suggested on page 1 - Hospital?
Even died - if so and corpse still in place you won't need maggots down the chimney! ;D
-
exactly
warn others, but she may move lol.
i to have just told fellow win dies.you get fed up if you do nothing or not.
your reputation is important to.
all I'm saying is were all different.

I could always alert the police, get them to break entry track the owner down and ask politely for my £18.00.
Can i just say nothing annoys me more than people saying right it off!!!??? Would you go to tesco and fill your trolly walk out and expect them
To let you off?
Or fill your car with fuel and drive off?
If we were all professionals we would track down every penny owed to us! Im not going to let her/him get away with it(providing they are breathing)

The two examples you mention come under stealing which the police will sort out.
As are most of the revenge suggestions above.
Even if you dirty the windows again you could be done for vandalism or harassment.
What you have is a word of mouth contract which is worth nothing under the law, if the customer
decides not to pay and sticks to their guns then you have no chance of ever getting the money.
I am not saying that you shouldn't try to get the money back but how many hours are you prepared to waste
to get back 15 or 20 minutes.
-
I once had a customer , he took me for a £10 clean , told me straight he wasnt paying to my face , his wife had asked me to leave it for 2 months , i had let it go for 3 just to be sure , i then cleaned and returned for my cash , i thought stay pro and write it off .
On the way home my blood began to boil and i thought F it , your gettin it matey !
The next day i went back with a pressure bottle brimmed with muddy water and got every single window , the neighbours saw me do it , and told him too .
I parked my sighned up van on the drive so they could see who did it .
That night i got a real nice call , police , local rag , all would be told and i would never work the area again.........I told him to fill his boots as i had a bit too much on the books anyway !!!
Nothing ever came of it .....the best bit is , he lives at number 9 , i now live in number 25 !!!!
I always give him a grin on passing , the look on his face is quality.......he is real burned by it.
I DONT SUFFER OVER NON PAYERS ANYMORE .......THEY DO THOUGH .... ;D ;D

I'm still trying to work out the similarities between Tesco's and window cleaning.
Maybe when out next window cleaning take a fully automated check out till with you and scan the windows as you clean them.
-
Never take on new work in December as always get the ones who just want xmas clean. Look after regular customers and new ones who are genuine will wait til new year. Always ensure new quotes are happy with price and cleaning interval making sure they understand it's not a one off clean before starting any new work.
Xmas brings out all the idiots trying a one off clean to impress their relatives coming to stay!
-
OP you shouldnt have cleaned them without speaking to her first agreeing the price and payment method.also any people that approach me right before xmas dont get cleaned until new year.if they want a decent window cleaner they will wait.
as for all the revenge attacks for non payment.no ive never resorted to it.
its a fact that all businesses have problems with non payment or shoplifting etc,etc but for me its miniscule in window cleaning.
i normally have to write off £35-£50 a year.this year itll be more like £120 but ive made thousands of pounds more than last year.
i do chase up debts but after a while its just not worth it as i have plenty of customers that will pay me.
you learn to sniff out bad customers after a while but i still get stung occasionally.as annoying as it is no point getting bitter about it.
most customers of mine are good solid payers, some pay me late but as long as i get paid in the end im not too concerned as i always have "rolling debt" as most of us have.
chin up lad.just think of all the xmas tips you ve got! ;D ;D
best wishes

Who said there was similarities? I suggested that tesco is a professional business, and so are we, if someone walked in and helped themselves and walked out without paying they wouldn't write it off?? So why should we.
I will wait until after christmas to make sure that there not just on holiday or anything, but i will get my £18.00 back without a doubt.

its part and parcel of this trade . you really do put trust in people. i did a commercial clean last year which i did at that particular time of every month , id been doing it for over a year, when i returned home there was an email saying thank you for the service and he no longer required my services . (probably cheaper windy) i said that i had cleaned that day and i acknowledge his instruction and it would be the last time i would be doing it ,invoice went in and he didn't pay . his reason being he thought it was a coincidence that the day he cancelled was the day i cleaned it .... never got the money but i chase him every time i see him .. fun for me seeing him squirm especially when he has colleagues with him .. often drive by his flats and like to do something to his windows just so he didn't get my window clean for free
-
Im with Dazmond, i constantly have rolling debt in the thousands per month , so it is inevitable that you may have to write off some debt from bad payers from time to time. Ed

Of course we all have rolling debt.
The problem however is with the one's who won't or can't pay.
There is a difference.

Its very easy to say do nothing just write if off when you are an established business and you have plenty income. But some folk do take the pee and steel you income.I say do what you think is worth the risk. Years ago a customer just said he had paid but he could not prove he paid and when I knocked he would not come to the door and yet I could see him at his desk working.
One of the windows was open so while I tried to get him come and discuss the payment, as I had a bank statement with me to prove my point.
His bill was 230 quid for gutters etc. So I put the pole against the window not seeing it was open and put a few liters into the house before I saw my mistake. So just put the pole in the van and left and never heard from him again. So I too have been unprofessional. If you find this bad so be it.
-
Fair play James , i only lost 10 not 230 , for 230 i would have put his bleedin windows through !

Andy, the end result is the same regardless if they have the money or not. If a customer does not want to pay then it is highly unlikely financially viable to pursue a small claims against the customer . Not only time consuming but i would rather concentrate my time on other matters in my business than a few quid here and there ! Ed
-
Aqua , is that not just asking for people to walk on you though ?
I can see the mentality that if you turn over vast ammounts then "it dont matter "
I have had the biggest waliking over of my life lately , not even window related , just family life.
From now on i am taking back the mentality that if i get wronged then look out , cos im coming back for you , i got slack and paid big time , we even got driven from the family home , 2014 is going to be a fun year , screw the pro image with work matters , i am established !
As for the home affairs , i cant say too much ;D

Was only talking about this to a mate today. December is messers month of the year. Only do the regs.
-
Easily resolved. First clean, double payment upfront. Then clean it as usual, and until they become an established customer dont clean it twice without them payin! if they dont wana pay upfront for the first clean obviously not that bothered about havin a window cleaner and gonna be a messer
-
until you step in their dogs TURD ;D

Nothin worse than turd everywhere! Lol

Rich, whenever we provide a service before we get paid then there is calculated risk. The trustworthy customers way out number the minority. Hope all goes well for you in 2014 . Ed
-
Aqua , dont get me wrong , i very rarely get done by a customer , but i dont understand it when they do it for such a small amount , in some ways i would rather it be a large amount , that way i could maybe respect them more for being ballsy and getting one over .
But as said , doing it for a tenner is like stamping on my head !!!

I don't turn over vast amounts of money, but I would still rather walk away from bad/non payers and concentrate my energy and time dealing with proper customers. Life's too short and I don't want to become bitter and twisted. Yes, they've got one over me. So what? They won't do it to me again (or to any other window cleaner that I tell about them).

This is really bad.. Even we have faced these problems in our company. In india this is very common, most of the people do this, we are used to it. Dont worry you will get your money back.

Indians , dont get me started on them , im not at all racist before any of you start !
I once had a job working for a good friend , i delivered frozen goods to take aways , chinese and indian mostly , the chinese were 99% good payers , indians on the other hand were shocking , they seemed to think that it was their given right to run up massive credit and then just shut the shop down , i saw my mate take a couple of bad hits on my round alone to the tune of 2K a pop , bearing in mind that there were 6 drivers , 24K if it happened to us all lets say .
Now , my mate took the losses and still had the ferrari 360 , range rover and boat , he never moaned , to us drivers anyway .
2 of us that were friends from school thought better of it , as if he went boobs up then we could be out of a job , we adapted the pay your current bill and you can have your delivery , we got the usual boss in london or he got chq book mate excuse , we just said no can do then chief and drove around the corner and waited for the call from our boss to say the chq book had been (funnily) found , we got all of them up to date and had no probs from then on.
POINT OF MY STORY , all can be taught , and kept there , i dont take a walkover anymore , and never will , if they dont pay , they get done to the tune of what they owe

I have noticed that anyone none english want everything for nothing.
First clean is fine its the second tome round they say "can we not go every 8weeks" or "its going to rain" or "sorry my husband isnt in yet and he pays"

I had a Asian customer once that I use to clean .
The bloke came out and demonstrated squeegee method which I did on his bottoms , think he was telling me he wanted them upstairs Tradded . This house is awkward with ladders .
So as I could hardly understand him , I just reeked my hose in and drove off . It was a house out on a limb as well .
Sod them

+1 here.
I've got a few (i think) sri lankans on my books.
I quoted high as I knew they'd barter.
We met in the middle. Still slightly high tbh as i expected them to give me agro on each clean.
And I insisted they pay a month (2 cleans) in advance.
Gave them 1 free clean on the day i quoted.
To their chagrin-they have been absolutely good as gold.
They're great jobs now.
Still always price high for non-english and usually price high for everyone else.

I have all these problems from white, English people. The 2 Asian families I have are top customers.

So a guy called "evercleanindia" comes on here and the last four (not Carl 2009) posters bang on about indians and asians and "none english" being bad payers and how you won't do them and how you're not racist ...
You gotta love the lack of self-awareness.
What next? "One of my best friends is Japanese but ..." ;D

I dont care who comes on here.
I dont care what nationality they are.
I am willing to share past experiences with people and because i previously have had problems with none english people i price higher to expect them to argue on the price? Is that ok with you?
It seems its not just me who has had these experiences.
-
Is condemning a whole race of people because you have a problem with a few
not racist ?
If you turn down a potential customer who you don't know just because of their ethnic background
then your a racist simple as that.
On a non racist topic....
H20 I have had locals haggle with me on price, I do the same as I do with everybody stick to my price
and walk away if they don't like it.
If they want the work done they will soon call you back.

My personal experiences how that the moajority of english customers i have dealt with have treat me well, accepted prices and payed on time. Obviously there is a small minority who mess us about who are removed or warned.
My experiences dealing with none english customers show that they want less often cleans, cheaper prices and often are not around when collecting (this is usually taxi drivers or takeaway owners) i would say 1in every 3 of these customers are like this, so unfortunatly this is why we price higher.
How very dare you say i am a racist let me tell you a few things here.
I played for all indian football team called "the bengal tigers" in the darlington sunday legue, i also worked for his takeaway for a year and class him and his family as good friends of mine. He laughed when i quoted his takeaway shop high and barterd on price( thats what they are brought up to do)
Its people like you who ruin this forum.

before replying to your post if that wasn't clear then I am sorry.
I disagree that you need to quote a higher price, I am not saying your racist for doing it.

Seems that in UK, people are falling over eachother to point out they're not racist!! If I have bad experiences with Turks here in Germany, I'd talk about it with other windies. I'd avoid Turkish custies. I'm here to earn as much as possible in the minimum time the easiest way I can. So if I avoid Turkish custies, that makes me a racist? Bring it on.
When you lot finally realise that business is business and it's all about money, the better. In the mean time, try working out how the police have a "federation of black police officers" and that's not racist.
Then people wonder why every man and his dog are making a B line for UK!! ::)roll We're talking about business practices here, not who's a naughty "wacist".
Feel free to call me racist. I'll take it on the chin while counting the money.
-
Its narrow minded people who make needless comments, i dont genuinely think anyone on here will be a racist!
This simple post has gone from me having a problem with a customer and how to deal with it in the correct way, to me having to explain how my comment wasnt racist.
Couldnt agree more with the comment above

I'm the same.Asians are the worst customers in my experience as it's in their culture to barter and try and get a cheap price.I avoid em these days simply because like cozy I'm out to make money for me and my family. ;D

I hate everyone in equal measure.

Mine and gold's post just meant that before the indian bloke had posted no one had mentioned asian customers. As soon as he said 'hi i'm from india' then posts ever since have been about how indian/asian customers are crap.
I agree on the most part, 95% of them are crap customers it was just the fact that the only reason it came up was because a new guy from india said hi!!
Chill dude, not every one shouta racist at every chance!!! :D
